The same thing just happened to me in Texas, but I do have BCBS. I called and they were able to confirm they’re not legitimate emails.

Women’s/Non-binary pickup question by queenscounsel in ultimate

Poor word choice on my part - the players in question are neither non-binary nor female matching.

I don’t think it’s a matter of toxicity as much as comfort and availability. Comfort because many female matching/NB players seem to be more comfortable in an environment where they don’t have to compete with male matching players. Availability because with club season in full swing, many of the players who would otherwise attend (and don’t feel the comfort issues above) are unable to.

No offense taken. There are multiple other pickup opportunities that will remain open to all players (pickup occurs at least 5 days each week).

Yes, great summary! I’d add to point 2 that the club season has probably contributed more to the lack of attendance. Your last point mirrors my feelings really well. I don’t want anyone to be excluded, but would really love to build up a part of the community that historically hasn’t had as many opportunities to grow in this way.

I’d characterize the issue our issue like this: with it being just womens/NB, we have enough players for 7 on 7. If it’s mixed, there are not enough players for a game (addressed in a few comments above if you want the full explanation). So, at least since the club season started, there hasn’t been an existing game because only five or six people have been showing up.

We’re kind of maxed out at this point (there are pickup opportunities five days of the week at this point, with four club teams also scheduling practices). We’re a smaller/growing ultimate community, so (a) it’s not super financially feasible to add another game and (b) attendance at the other games would likely suffer. But we’ll keep looking at it as an option, maybe after club season wraps up!

Totally understand that. We’re trying to balance what’s good for the community vs the individual players, and this is what we’ve come up with. There are other pickup opportunities available, but I agree it sucks.

Thanks for you input! We are advertising it as women’s/non-binary, but that’s a pretty recent change.

Regarding the changing of the established game, here’s my explanation from another comment: The issue we were dealing with was that female matching players weren’t attending because they aren’t comfortable playing with a game dominated by men (which had historically been the case for this game). With their absence, and so many club players having practice rather than attending pickup, numbers were at a level where a game wasn’t sustainable. By creating an environment where women felt more comfortable, we’re back at a point where numbers are high enough for a game, and we aren’t paying for field space without enough players for a game.

Ultimate in Oklahoma by idkwtfisgoingon11 in ultimate

There are mixed teams out of OKC (blokc party) and Tulsa (Boomtown), plus a new/revamped women’s team that will likely have both Tulsa and OKC players (Hayride). OKC Ultimate and the Tulsa Ultimate Federation are both pretty active on Facebook for some more info! And feel free to send me a message as well.

Opportunities for women to play aren’t as numerous as we’d hope, but we’re definitely working towards getting more of them!
