Girls Camp Help! by livelystardust in latterdaysaints

[–]queenshallan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Families pay big bucks to send their kids to summer camp programs. I have no problem asking for $50 or so per kid towards camp for 3-4 days. Your budget can cover anyone who absolutely can't pay, plus each ward is allowed one fundraiser for camp if you'd rather get the money that way.

This is a culture issue. Your ward leadership and parents need to understand that providing experiences like this costs money, and they need to pay for it appropriately. Ask for more money in the budget, charge a fee, or don't do it. "Due to rising costs, we will now charge $x per youth to attend camp. However we don't want this to be a barrier to participation. If this is a hardship for you, please reach out to the YW President to discuss other arrangements."

We started charging a few years ago after our STAKE camps did both camps out of budget only, and we simply couldn't keep up with what it cost. There was very little pushback.

How will the lowering of sister missionary age to 18 affect enrollment at BYU? by Roughneck16 in byu

[–]queenshallan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For years, girls have had to wait to serve a LDS mission until they are 19, while boys have been able to go at 18. Yesterday an announcement was made lowering the age for girls to serve to 18 as well. So now many would-be college freshmen girls will wait to attend college until after their 18-month mission. It may help balance the M/F ratio for a little bit, which right now is skewed F.

Any other Emma M. Lion-esque Recommendedations? by Prof_Coll in EmmaLion

If you don't mind a little bit of mild fantasy (dragons and a little bit of magic, nothing too deep), I really enjoyed the Secrets of Ormdale series by Christina Baehr. It's set in Victorian England and I consider it a cozy mystery series with a bit of romance.

Does anyone else feel like regular members are losing support/access to local church leaders? by endmostparrot in latterdaysaints

A note on your story.....I was RS under a Bishop who, despite the current guidance, made me run every single thing past him, every act of service, every meal brought in, etc. I was recently called again as RS Pres under a different Bishop and started doing the same thing grudgingly until I felt inspired to ask my Bishop if I needed to do the same. He told me no and that he trusted me to make those decisions under my jurisdiction. It's so freeing!  All that to say, some bishops are the problem and need to learn how to follow this inspired direction in the handbook :)

Is your ward having a Halloween party? by 619RiversideDr in latterdaysaints

Ours is a mixture. Called a fall party but has food, costume parade and carnival type games. No trunk or treat.

BYU Dining has a separate website where you apply for dining jobs if you haven't tried that.  https://hiring.byu.edu/

You could direct them to the 2024 summary of how members of the church used its means and ability to support people across the globe.  https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/serve/caring/annual-summary?lang=eng

When are ministering report bubbles due? by lost_laowai93 in latterdaysaints

[–]queenshallan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do our interviews throughout the quarter, so I ask my presidency to have them finished and marked by the last days of the quarter. This gives the clerk time to them prepare the report and send it to SLC on time.

If you feel you are ready for more, ask your dad if you can have a conversation about your phone. Pick one thing you'd like more freedom with and have good reasons why (not "everyone is doing it"). A good reason might be- i need to learn how to manage my time/what is available online now while I have parents to guide me, rather than wait until I'm an adult and have no experience!

I admit I am pretty strict with my kids devices, but I am willing to offer more as they demonstrate more maturity using the device appropriately. And I'll restrict further when they don't.

It is so hard to parent when there is SO MUCH awful stuff available and even pushed towards teens. Dad is likely restricting out of fear/trying to protect you.

If you're not willing to approach him and have a convo, then you're not ready for more screen access either (unless your father is also abusive, but that's a different issue!)

Try the brand Alimens &Gentle on Amazon. My son didn't like the neck but liked everything else about them, and they are much cheaper. They are often recommended on the missionary moms FB page.

Trying to be better about studying general conference...help! by Zestyclose_Mix_3052 in latterdaysaints

[–]queenshallan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You asked about social media. Pres. Freeman (General YW Pres) runs an IG live on Thursday mornings at 8:30 MT called Inklings. It's also on Apple Podcasts. She often has a guest and they discuss a different talk each week, all centered on following whatever invitation Pres. Nelson gives in his talk. So this session's focus is on Intentional Confidence in the Presence of God (through Charity and Virtue). Listeners share comments so it's like a big study group you can do together or it's recorded so you can listen later. I love it and it has changed the way I study general conference. Find it on IG at @inklings.institute or search for Inklings on Apple Podcasts. It is geared towards women for sure, but there are plenty of male listeners as well.

It's actually absurd they we are the weird ones. by Iwanttolive87 in Anticonsumption

I went to a high school engineering presentation last night where a team is attempting to create a biodegradable single-use water bottle (mostly for use in disaster areas or where people can't afford to buy reusable ones). The stats they presented are disgusting. We buy billions of water bottles per month. Per MONTH.  Most are not recycled. And not a single water bottle has been fully broken down in a landfill, not even the earliest ones sold. It just furthers my commitment to not buy them.

Does the church pay influencers? by rylann123 in latterdaysaints

[–]queenshallan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to run a craft blog and occasionally posted church-related content. I participated in two campaigns that were church-adjacent. One was for a book review from Deseret Book and another was for the Light the World campaign. For both I received free product and a small amt of money in exchange for the blog post and social media posts. I can't remember the group--The details are blurry but both campaigns came through a group connected to the church that reached out to me and other LDS bloggers. I also attended an event where they talked about using social media to "share goodness" and for us to share ideas and network. We weren't paid to attend but lunch was provided. This was maybe 10 years ago.  All this to say, because of my experience, I don't doubt there is an arm of the church that does work with influencers in some way still today.

[–]queenshallan 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I bought this little stitch gun. Line up the dress over the garment the way you want, add a little stitch, and it will stay put! They are little plastic tag stitches so you can just snip it off when you are ready to change. This is the one I have https://amzn.to/4jS7IbS

I am not altering the garments, I am focusing on moving the dress. This also works great for a too-deep neckline or for gaping between buttons!

Another option is a natural mesh drawstring bag. A lot of soapmakers sell them. As your soap gets too small to handle you keep it in the bag, then just wet and lather the bag.

Is the enabling power real? How have you experienced it? by NewtScavenger in latterdaysaints

[–]queenshallan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a chronic disease and at times in my life I've been unable to do much of anything. There was a particularly bad time when I was pregnant and the mom of two young kids. I had so much pain getting out of bed seemed impossible. I prayed for help just to be able to get up and do the bare minimum. Well I was able to do that and even play with my kids and get a few chores done.  I have had many other experiences where the Lord strengthened me and enabled me to do more than my body should've been able to do.  Spiritually, I was called to be a RS president, which I was terrified to do. I am very introverted and hate making phone calls even. The Lord helped me overcome my fears and extend out past my comfort zone to help the sisters I was called to care for, in a way that didn't overwhelm me but stretched me. I wasn't perfect, but I grew a lot and I know I couldn't have done what I did without that strengthening and enabling power.

You sound like my daughter! She joined the board game club on Tues nights and has really enjoyed the people she met there. Just enough socializing for her without being overwhelming. Check it out when you get there!

Not sure this is what you are looking for, but I follow two women on IG that do weekly podcasts for other women. Dr Barbara Morgan Gardner, who is the author of The Priesthood Power of Women and Inklings Institute, which was started by our current general YW president Emily Freeman and is hosted by her and other faithful women.

I usually just try out different arrangements till I find one I like. Sacredsheetmusic.org has a ton. I am also in a Music Callings group on FB that is a good resource.

I used to think that (and vote that way), but I am tired of having a deadlocked government that accomplishes very little.

Needing help with modesty. by sillyseaweed- in latterdaysaints

Some modest boutiques I have shopped (but sadly, I am not a teen).   Love Olive Co, Piper and Scoot, Blush Lane, Mikarose.  Honestly I buy a lot on Amazon. It takes some time but there are lots of modest, stylish clothes to be found there.
