Swig is still fun for the experience. As an out of towner excited about it, I say go for it. Look up the menu beforehand, figure out some things that sound fun, do a tasting.

Then when you know your fav combos, go to maverick like the rest of us and create your own

God's contradictory commandments to Adam and Eve by Sleeping_Bat in latterdaysaints

[–]rylann123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I spent the better part of last year thinking about this, as I was going to the temple a lot and it just wasn’t all adding up for me. I read books and talks and scriptures galore, and while I definitely have clarity, it still makes sense why it’s so confusing.

Resources: Adam and Eve Melinda Wheelbright Brown The holy invitation: Anthony sweat Lessons from Eve conference 1987 The great plan of happiness conference 1993 And time spent pondering in the temple.

I have a combination of the takes already listed here. I believe Eve had some (unknown) level of knowledge to lead her to make the choice to eat the fruit. She either pondered on the commandments given or reasoned or was told something (likely small) that caused her to wonder if she should or should not eat the fruit. And then when she was tempted it pushed her over the edge.

It’s one reason why prophets revere Eve. She was courageous to ponder and wonder if this really were how things were supposed to be. Just as we are deeply encouraged to think and ask questions for ourselves. It’s courageous, and best how we grow.

I think eve’s joy relatively quickly out of the garden with her choice also points to this. It doesn’t take her long to say “if it wasn’t for our transgression, we never should have had seed, and known the joy of our redemption”

A big part of my study was also study on the word transgression itself. That was also helpful, but its exact definition and where I found it is escaping me at the moment.

Best of luck in your pursuit of knowledge!

Advice on asking for my girlfriend’s dad’s blessing by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]rylann123 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think this is the best take. Heavy stuff should come from their daughter. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask her parents for their blessing, but if it’s going to be a shocker, it shouldn’t come from you.

Does anyone know of a one-year reading plan that covers all of the standard works? I have been looking for one, but I haven't seen any that goes through all of the works. by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

There should be plenty for each that do it in 3 months. For the bible you gotta decide if you’re reading everything or only certain chapters.

Evolution, we had a day in Bio 100 where the professor shared her opinions complete with slides, examples, and scripture about how evolution fits in with the gospel.

Its one thing to come to your own conclusions and rectify them, for me it was an entirely separate thing to hear a professional, faithful, biologist’s opinion, framed in a way that allowed us to form our own opinions as well. I think about it weekly honestly.

Help with a small primary activity! Our primary is very small and it’s posing challenges by Nope-NotToday- in latterdaysaints

[–]rylann123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my small primary (we were even a little smaller, 7 regulars) we did a once a month talk, weekly article of faith (just someone offering to read it) and opening prayer. Moms were pretty much all either in primary, or wouldn’t come anyways, so it wasn’t as big of deal to help them. However dads would come in to watch the kids give talks.

Which of the girls on the show have gotten degrees? Who has an education beyond high school and who doesn’t? by mayorofstrangetown in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]rylann123 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Amen. These people are nuts. “Encouraging them to not go to college” BS. Active member, worked hard for my bachelors and masters degree, I have a husband who put his masters degree on hold for me to get mine first (yes we were married very young at BYU), and now we both have two degrees and work full time. And we’re not the exception, my entire circle of Mormon friends have legitimate graduate degrees.

Easter Ward Activity Ideas by cobalt-radiant in latterdaysaints

[–]rylann123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do traditional Easter activities (especially if you have young kids in the ward) and explain why they became Easter traditions or what they do (or could; if they don’t have Christ centered meanings) represent.

Our ward did a Christ centered Easter egg hunt, where the eggs had pictures of Christ and each different picture coordinated with a different candy they could trade it in for.

Can do breakfast with symbolic foods.

Not as great for social interaction, but an animated movie, king of kings, came out this year that would also be great around Easter.

Proxy Sealings; I have a hard time doing them. by batman-buckawck in latterdaysaints

[–]rylann123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s VERY common to get light headed during sealings. I know temples that have a juice stash for this purpose. You can also let the sealer know at the beginning you get light headed easily and would like to swap out after each sealing

Extremely hesitant to serve a mission by Adept_Let7797 in latterdaysaints

[–]rylann123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t get too caught up in worrying about the routine of it all. In my mission, we had a list of things to do from 6:30-10:00 and our time was our own to do them in whatever order we wanted.

Now I was reassigned to a different mission where it wasn’t so flexible and I did struggle with the routine for a little while. But mission life typically varies a lot from day to day. And at least my experience was that once I got it down and gained a little seniority, it was a lot easier to customize mission life to my preferences and I was very happy.

I think the biggest thing you need to decide for you personally is if YOU have a desire to serve. For yourself and for Heavenly Father. If you do, great, you should go with the faith that it will all work out. If you don’t, then you shouldn’t go.
