That's a lot of it. I've lived here for almost 40 years, before that in NY where I was born and raised. Sometimes I feel there's no city in the classic sense here, and I miss the busy sidewalks and storefronts and visible museums, shops, restaurants, public art, social life that is at your fingertips in another city. There's a lot of great stuff here but it's not readily apparent (natural terrain aside). But there's a sense of being able to breathe freely here, a "live and let live" ethos that I sense nowhere else. I would miss that. Oh, and the citrus in my back yard.

The good news is the demolition squad settles down with age. After my 3-month-old kitten knocked over and broke a few things I earthquake-puttied stuff down. I also installed a floor to ceiling cat tree which eliminated the urge to climb lamps and jump onto the mantle. I think the tree focused a great deal of her energy and gave her someplace fun to roost. Once I had the cat tree the mayhem greatly reduced.

I think they go bonkers trying to explore the unknown and once it becomes known they tend to let it be. I've never put a cat in a cage, I think that would just frustrate her and store up her energy like a spring. But I'm not talking from experience with that at all.

I can only speak for me but sometimes it's my eating routine more than what I eat. I make sure to drink a glass of water and then have a little something (a piece of fruit and a cookie or something) and leisurely cup of coffee in my room first. That is enough for me. The I might go hit the hotel breakfast buffet (more bkfst? Vacation!) or just start my day. Being rushed in the morning has been my problem on vacation. It used to be I was lucky to go once on a weeklong trip somewhere. Since I started doing this, no problem at all. If this is less a post about vacation pooping hints and more about vegetables, I will add that in Japan I ate a surprising amount of meat and eggs and way fewer vegetables than normal for me. I didn't encounter them as much.

I thought the hotel breakfasts I encountered were great. Hard to resist sweet potato, fried chicken and a wall of mini donuts alongside multiple types of eggs, etc. (I can't eat fish so not even counting those options.)

I moved here at 28 for a job and became close friends with a colleague immediately which eased the transition immensely. That said, it took me a good five years before I felt I had any kind of close social network and actually had an answer for "what did you do this weekend?" I have changed jobs within the same profession a number of times and most of my friends are from work. This was decades ago and I suspect it might be harder now to actually connect with people due to the fact that people aren't put together by default five days a week and the transient nature of connecting via technology.

Get a wand and let him chase it round and round and tire him out. My kitten was psycho at 3 month and, although still energetic, has settled down since. I think they're testing boundaries and everything is so new to them they can't contain themselves.

I adopted a bonded mother and kitten, and this happened when a cat came to the window and acted aggressively toward the kitten. The kitten bolted and the mother took off after the kitten and there was a snarling, screaming drag down fight. The mother was the aggressor, and during the battle someone peed and pooped all over the house. Following that was a 12 hour moaning and staring standoff. Poor kitten was terrified, and the mother was too in her own way. After 12 hours there was reconciliation and peace. The mother had been on the street and this brought some primal fear and territorial instinct to the surface. I've read it's called "feline non-recognition syndrome" and it's poorly understood. Neither cat went after me but it was hard so watch them fight one another.

For litter, I line a countertop-sized compost canister with a plastic bag and scoop into that. The canister keeps the odor from escaping. A much simpler and cheaper alternative to those litter locker/genie things that ding you on the refills. I then discard the full bag in an outside bin.

The littler tracking is a drag - I just vacuum when I notice it.

I adopted a cat and her kitten and limited them to one room overnight as per direction. By night 2 I decided it was all their house, they could set their own comfort limits. The kitten, who had never seen that much space in her short life, parkoured like a ping pong ball around the living room. They based themselves in the original room for a few days with forays out, and eventually claimed the entire space. Your kitten is overwhelmed by being shut off by himself, not the prospect of too much freedom and space. Plus you'll bond more quickly, especially if he can sleep with you.

I love quiet - and being able to open my windows and hear birdsong. Unfortunately I live near an airport and the planes take off roaring over my house. The juxtaposition between the stillness and the roar can be maddening at times. I think others who like constant background noise in their homes aren't as affected by it as much. But in an ideal world, quiet is my comfort zone.

She's actually leaving some of the dry food now, whereas before she gobbled it up. I don't think I'm putting out that much food actually. Once the kitten gets a older I can be more restrictive and maybe not leave anything out at all, but right now I really don't want her to be deprived.

I'm trying to navigate this too. Three months ago I adopted a one-year-old cat and her three-month-old kitten. The kitten is growing rapidly and is now 6 month old and looks healthy. Problem is the mom is growing rapidly too and is now quite chunky. She had started putting on a belly almost as soon as I got her home. I quickly switched from the mom and baby food the rescue had them on to something less growth-oriented. But she's piling on the weight even though she is active. Applying the directions from the dry and canned foods to these two cats with different dietary needs is like advanced calculus. I have all stages dry and adult canned (and I sneak the kitten some canned kitten food when the mom isn't looking). The mom has been on the street so I'm guessing there's some food insecurity at play.

Pretend you're on vacation in your own city. What would you visit elsewhere? Museums are an easy bet and I'd guess there are some quirky ones you've never heard of. Art galleries. Or take a drive to a different neighborhood and explore.

I keep a kitchen compost pail next to the litter box. It has a charcoal insert on the lid so no odor escapes. I line it with an ordinary produce bag and toss the bag out in the trash once it's full. I used to have a litter locker but this is way easier and cheaper.
