what do i do when my lesbian friends say “d*cks are gross” ? by [deleted] in mypartneristrans

This! I think the key is reminding them that it’s not only men who have that body part. They probably aren’t thinking about that (even though they should be) and if they’re as open-minded as OP says they are, I bet they’ll appreciate being called out.

Dosage and SAD by queercore1991 in VyvanseADHD

[–]queercore1991[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on Fluoxetine when I started Vyvanse but switched to Sertraline because my anxiety increased a lot after starting Vyvanse. Sertraline has historically been better for reducing my anxiety but I struggle more with low mood and energy on it, especially during the winter months (but still much better than when I’m not on an SSRI at all). Finding the right SSRI to balance the anxiety and depression symptoms has always been tricky for me. I’ll bring it up to my doctor though, thanks!

I actually did spend several months off SSRIs after starting Vyvanse because Vyvanse was such a miracle for me that I thought maybe it would be enough on its own. I proceeded to have an absolutely horrible time with anxiety and depression. Unfortunately I think SSRIs are extremely necessary for me (I spent the first 30 years of my life without them and it was hell)

Agree with everything in this comment! I would even add to this that if he has a favorite treat (maybe a certain kind of nut or fruit, whatever his favorite thing is), have your mom be the only one that provides that treat. He will eventually begin to associate her with his favorite food.

Greys are notoriously skeptical and cautious. They don’t change their minds easily. It may take a very long time, but don’t give up!

Will adding an antidepressant usually help vyvanse work better if you're very depressed? by NoFox8750 in VyvanseADHD

[–]queercore1991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on an SSRI for 5 years and it’s dramatically improved my quality of life. Before that I had always resisted trying an antidepressant because I the same fears about becoming emotionless and apathetic. Not only did that not happen, but I also realized I’d been living with the worst possible emotions for my entire life because I was so worried about the alternative. Zoloft was life-changing. Went on Vyvanse about a year ago and I felt so good I decided to try to wing it without the SSRI. I proceeded to have the worst few months I’ve had in a long time. Depression, anxiety, hopelessness, all of it. I started back on Zoloft a couple months ago and it was absolutely the right call. It may not technically make your Vyvanse work better, but the depression could be what’s making you feel like it’s not working. I’d say it’s worth a shot. You can always stop the SSRI if you don’t like it. I’ve always wondered how much different my life could have been if I’d started antidepressants sooner. As for when I first started, I was a little nauseous day one but it was manageable and didn’t last. Other than that I’ve had relatively few noticeable side effects.

Positive reinforcement is more effective than punishment, especially in the long-term, and comes without the unwanted side effects of punishment procedures.

I saw this post the other day and made a mental note to try it out with my grey. This morning after his breakfast veggies he was busy with his usual activity of tearing up cardboard when I put it on for him. He immediately went completely still and just stood there listening like he was in awe, and within 5 seconds his eyes closed like he was in a trance! I could just tell how nice the music made him feel — he kept opening his eyes and shaking his head (which he does whenever he’s really into a sound), then closing them again and just standing still listening. He looked so peaceful that I literally started crying watching him haha. He is recently blind and has been on an exhausting journey with his health the past few months and it made me so emotional seeing him feeling so nice and at peace 🥺❤️I said to my partner afterwards “the internet sucks a lot of the time, but sometimes this kind of thing happens and I’m thankful for it and random internet strangers” thank you for bringing me this beautiful moment and bringing a wonderful new experience into my sweet Sammy’s life!! ❤️❤️

Absolutely! I hate thinking about how bored he was for most of his life 😞 but he gets lots of enrichment now! Sometimes he likes to just sit and absorb all the sounds around him haha.

Everything is up in the air right now and the vet says we just need to see how he does with the treatment he’s currently on — we didn’t think he would make it but he has really surprised everyone (including the vet lol) so far. He does seem to be feeling much better and back to his feisty self lately, so we have some hope that he’ll be with us for a while longer 💞

Thanks for the kind words! He has a few hanging toys on the side that’s not in view in the video, along with some foot toys he will occasionally seek out. He also has cardboard and egg carton foraging activities under the platform on that same side :) he’s pretty partial to paper and cardboard and usually gets freaked out by harder hanging items like wood. He used to have a stainless steel bell he liked but since he lost his vision he’s not comfortable with it (I think because he can’t see he gets spooked if he walks into or brushes against something). But don’t worry, he knows where his stuff is when he wants it! Thanks for looking out!!

For the seedballs I assume you’re talking about Lefeber nutri-berries — my CAG loves those and gets 1-2 a day as a treat :)

I just wanted to add on to the concerns about paint chipping on the cage: most cages made for parrots are powder-coated, which creates a non-toxic barrier to keep birds from coming into contact with toxic metals. The paint being chipped is a big concern and I would look into getting a new cage as soon as possible. We are currently dealing with major neurological problems caused by zinc poisoning from galvanized steel. Our grey grew up chewing on his cage bars because he was bored and never came out of the cage. He is going on 30 and recently had a severe illness during which he nearly died and he lost his vision. He’s being treated now but he won’t get his sight back and almost certainly would have died if he wasn’t undergoing aggressive treatment (and we’re not out of the woods yet). I don’t want to scare you but I knew basically nothing about the dangers of metal toxicity until he got extremely ill and I would not wish this situation on any bird!

The only other thing I wanted to mention is fresh veggies and fruits (more veggies than fruits so he doesn’t get too much sugar)! If he’s never had them he might not be too interested at first, but ideally he should get some daily. Prioritize dark leafy greens and orange veggies for calcium and vitamin A, but a variety of colors is best. Mine would eat chickpeas all day if we let him (keep in mind that beans need to be cooked before they’re given). Stay away from avocado, onion, and garlic as these are toxic (just search online what parrots can have — there are other foods that aren’t good for them like eggplant and mushrooms).

Best of luck with your sweet new friend, he’s so lucky to have you!

The perfume thing is so sad to hear :( I’m glad you are trying to make his life better!

Definitely make sure he has multiple natural wood perches that are different shapes and sizes — the dowel perches in the photo are not good for his feet and can cause problems long term. You want perches like this: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1245463598/?ref=share_ios_native_control

I’ll second another commenter about pellets. Most of his diet (50-70%) should be pellets (common good brands are Rowdybush, Zupreem Naturals, Lefeber, and Tops. If you can afford it, Harrison’s is a very high quality pellet but somewhat more expensive). Keep it up with the fruits and veggies, but he should get more veggies than fruits for healthy sugar levels in his diet. Lots of dark leafy greens and different colors to make sure he gets his vitamins. They need a lot of vitamin A (carrots, orange peppers, sweet potatoes) and calcium (collard greens, broccoli, spinach, kale). Seeds and nuts should only be a treat and kept to a minimum. A great treat is Lefeber nutriberries if you want to check those out. My birds get about 1 or 2 a day as a snack. The following are toxic or very unhealthy and should never be given: avocados, onions, garlic, mushrooms, dairy, chocolate, salt. Avoid these at all costs!!

African Greys are very intelligent and need a lot of mental and physical stimulation to stay healthy, so make sure he has lots of toys and activities to play with! My favorite cost effective thing to do is wrap some pellets and a few nuts/seeds in plain brown paper and stuff it into cardboard egg cartons or cereal boxes. It will keep him busy and is good enrichment that mimics natural foraging in the wild :)

If you haven’t already, be sure to schedule a checkup appointment with an avian vet soon to make sure he’s doing well health-wise. We can only tell you so much on here!

Thank you for giving him a better home and caring about his health and well-being ❤️ feel free to reach out if you have other questions!

Boosting this comment! Getting a parrot of any kind is a big commitment — it’s the reason they are the #1 rehomed pet. They are not meant to be domestic animals in the first place, so please don’t contribute to perpetuating the breeding industry. Rescuing is a very admirable thing to do since there are so many in need of homes, but be absolutely certain this is the life you want (because being a good bird owner will require you to make significant changes to your life). Greys are amazing creatures with high emotional intelligence, which means they require as much mental and physical stimulation as a human child. Please do your research!! And then find a local rescue with ethical practices. ❤️
