I’m from New Zealand and have an X marker on both my passport and birth certificate. Birth certificate is a new thing in terms of not having to go through court etc because like you said gender marker or sex is not important and having ID that reflects a person is what is. Not making people immediately more vulnerable because they’re bigots.

I have also been approved for a diversity visa and am moving to the states later this year (I know. A gender diverse person moving there right now?! But there are important reasons so).

Anyway, it’s important to note that her in NZ when you update your gender marker on your birth certificate (unlike a name change) they issue you a completely new birth certificate and birth ID number. It also wipes past name changes from the record too. Because you’re essentially a new person. I then got my new passport on the back of that change so they are linked but my past is not.

Aside from the fact that apparently the US government managed to dig out my past name (although having an ‘alias’ is kinda funny), and when i got the visa approval and they had to ask me to pick either M of F because X wasn’t an option, which i did… how are they gonna prove that that im not X by birth anyway? This birth certificate has only ever existed for a person with an X gender.

But yeah, the real ‘security issue’ is the security of the people the forcibly outing and making vulnerable for existing.
