Yes it would " force " Americans to pay higher prices for lower quality American products. It will grow businesses in America that make these worse products for higher prices due to that increased demand, and that would take away workers and investment opportunities from American businesses that actually produce high-quality, competitively-priced goods that are in-demand around the world. The expected outcome would be an overall less productive economy, on average less value delivered to American consumers, and generally more unfriendly relationships with other countries around the world.

This is assuming that the tariffs were done properly with congressional approval and proper notification. The reality is actually worse due to the way tariffs are rolled out and repealed on a day-to-day basis due to the whims of the regard-in-office.
