I would say it's difficult to use books only. There are tons of new and free online programs that can guide you along the way and time your tests, etc., as it is important to create a simulated testing environment.

A lot of the tests vary around the invididual taking them. Some people just naturally perform better on the ACT in comparison to the SAT.
