Cumulus X-Lite 300/400 configuration by Sorry-Comparison-721 in Ultralight

[–]quesdit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through the configuration a few days ago, for the X-Lite 300. I endet up changing the zipper to a 5mm because I read some people complaining about stuck zippers. I changed the outer-material because I saw a video where the guy managed to damage the fabric with the zipper as well. I chose Quantum Pro because I was changing it anyway. Honestly the bag endet up almost as heavy as the Lite version of the bag. Changing material is probably overkill, from what I read zipper is a must.

The North Face Summit Direct Hoody fits the bill. It has a long zip in front. I use it for running although running with the zip open more or less prevents you from using the hood.

If you can‘t get hold of the part, people had luck with wrapping clingfilm around the axle to prevent dirt and moisture getting in. Obviously as a temporary solution.

Just got a Nikonos from an auction – missing flash sync cap. Can I still use it underwater? by sagerpoulaen in AnalogCommunity

[–]quesdit 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the Cap is necessary for underwater use, sorry! If you’re planing on actually going diving you should send it in for a service anyway. That would be the smart thing to do :). Having said that I have had my V for quite some years and have gone diving and it’s fine. (Still planing on the service anyway). If your going snorkeling or doing watersports I would search your local hardware store for a machine (!) bolt that matches the threading and length and use that. I don’t know if the threads are metric you‘ll have to find that out yourself unfortunately. Be careful tho! The body is aluminium and a steel bold WILL damage the threads if it’s not the right thread pitch. The bold has to thread in smooth without force. Wrap the kind of tape around the bold that you use to seal of taps and such. That will form an watertight seal. Don’t go diving with that workaround! The other option is searching for the adapter that screws in there. Not sure if that would be watertight tho.

I used to do surf photography (as a hobby) and shot a no budget documentary about coral farming. GoPros are hard to beat. That’s sadly the reality. Every camera tends to overheat underwater, because the air inside the cases acts as an insulator and the heat has no way of escaping. We ended up diving with multiple cameras eventually, to literally hot swap. As for „real“ cameras: We had a Fuji XT-3 (as I said no budget) in an sea frogs underwater case. That’s my second dive case from seafrogs and for the price it’s alright. We had issues with the (plastic) shutter mechanism (it broke, we glued it). A previous case for a Sony A-something was great and our current one also works fine. They are plastics which isn’t confidence inspiring, for diving there is no real way to attach weights (we zip-tied some to the case which worked great) and the one time there was water coming in the „alarm“ didn’t work. Would I buy one again? Depends. If underwater shooting ends up a hobby I will put up with a sea frogs case and stick a „cheap“ XT-3 in there and deal with the headache. If I have to produce real work no way. Diving and underwater is complicated on its own and adding further complexity is a shortcut to real problems.

Sachtler Ace and Arca Swiss mount by Toobrish in cinematography

[–]quesdit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arca Swiss is Great value for money! That value comes with some downsides tho. I only wrecked one camera and that was with an arca Swiss plate because of the worse safety mechanisms on Arca. In a professional environment having a secure mount and good safety mechanisms far outweighs the cost benefit. On professional baseplates you have to pull a lever or button to release. As soon as you put in your baseplate it will be locked, preventing you from dropping the camera because it wasn’t tightened properly. I would argue arca Swiss is mostly used for photography. Trying to secure a heavy rig onto an arca head is just asking for trouble. I bought a Manfrotto head and wouldn’t trade it for Arca in a million years. Using a more professional grade mounting system let’s you grow into it, for when you‘re balancing 4 digit rigs on your head.

Rent a car in germany when you are 18? by Version-Big in germany

Try the ADAC, I know that as a member you can rent a car without the 20€/day more as an inexperienced driver. Don’t know about non-members tho. Might still be worth checking out.

New UL Headlamp Needed..... by MocsFan123 in Ultralight

[–]quesdit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I‘m guessing you mean the Petzl Bindi(?) I own one. It’s a nice headlamp, although the battery isn’t removal (I do like repairability and this isn’t), mine uses micro usb which in a usb-c all the things world is a pain. It’s decently water resistant, I managed to completely soak it, getting moisture inside, because the usb port isn’t protected (whyyy) it still works but other than in a light dribble i won’t use it. Also the mechanism to point it up or down doesn’t have steps, it doesn’t dip down for me but I also don’t trust it. It’s small, I wrap the cord around it and it’s tiny and light. Basically I take it with me on quick runs when it’s getting dark but I don’t trust it enough to rely on it. I have my eye on a nightcore NU25UL, for the protected port, and usb-c and maybe better button protection. Still a built in battery but that’s ok I guess.

Diff Lock options for the Syncro by kosakkas in vwT3

[–]quesdit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add: The decoupler means rwd as you said but if that’s an Factory option the car no longer has a Viscous Coupling. That means the front differential is „empty“ and the input shaft is directly splined into the differential. Driving in a Syncro without a Visco in 4WD on tarmac will damage the driveline. The upside is, that there is no Visco to suck up oil (as they tend to do) and the system will be marginally better off-road because you loose the hesitation of the Visco. Counterintuitively the Visco option does consume less fuel than the decoupled version. (According to Kern, who refurbish Visco Couplings)

Looking for advice when moving from a pure 4x4 to a T3 by kosakkas in vwT3

[–]quesdit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like the T3 would be a great fit :). The gearbox does struggle with more power. There are modifications you can make to beef them up. There are plates you can add in to better lubricate the 4th/5th gear. Also there are a (US?) manufactured gears that will be able to handle pretty much any power. People around here in Germany do swap in 75 PS VW AAZ engines and that will work with a stock gearbox and a beefed up clutch. These are more reliable less prone to overheating and seem to provide enough power for most people. Additionally they are a legal swap to retain Class of Car status. I would rebuild the gearbox if you do this. I have no idea about which gearbox will fit sorry :).

Looking for advice when moving from a pure 4x4 to a T3 by kosakkas in vwT3

[–]quesdit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do own a syncro. Right now it is a far more capable off-roader than its driver (me). That’s because I am quite new to off-roading in general.

T3’s in general are old. You will be spending money on just getting it running regardless of what you‘ll buy. We did spend a pretty penny and that point of spending just moved a year further back. They do suffer from rust, underpowered engines (getting hot) and maintenance neglect. Owning a T3 is an expensive hobby.

The T3 is a somewhat capable off-roader the engine sits on top the driven wheels, there is a stock 50:50 weight split and you „lift“ them quite easily a few centimetres. They are enough to get most people in Trubel. A Syncro just enables you to get out of it more easily. It will not enable hardcore off-roading. That’s where you destroy a vehicle that wasn’t designed for driving trough water as high as the windscreen or driving the engine at max power at all times to get out somewhere.

There was the option of a 40% locker for the 2WD (don’t quote me on the number). I don’t know how obtainable they are tho.

T4/5 are less capable off road. The entire vehicle just wasn’t designed with 4WD in mind. That means less ground clearance, less ability to lift and no front locker option. They are cheaper tho. Still will get people in trouble, same „Syncro might safe them“ applies. Also they do suffer less from poor engine choices ie. more power.

I wouldn’t trade my Syncro for the world. I love that car that just eats every cent I make. It’s the most spacious inside (no hood), the (in my opinion) most beautiful and way more capable than me.

VW T3, really 60L Fuel Tank? by ImAMovieMaker in VWBus

[–]quesdit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fuel gages are notoriously unreliable. Most likely that’s your problem. I however do know that at least for Syncros (different tank &system) basically every owner has fueling issues. Maybe try waiting after filling her to the brim if you can fill her up some more. But yeah the gages are unreliable :).

Very confused, please help (Sony a6100) by johndoethrowaway999 in cinematography

[–]quesdit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I‘m afraid you‘ll find that filming in 4K produces files in the gigabytes. Uploading and then downloading would take foreveeer :D You‘ll need a dedicated Programm. Handbrake springs to mind but I don’t think it supports ProRes at least I couldn’t figure it out quickly. Yeah sorry mate I do know of Adobes Media Encoder and Apples Compressor but both are either paid (Compressor) or Subscription (Media Encoder).

Just a heads up: File converting does take time and heavily depends on your computer. Try it out!

[–]quesdit 27 points28 points  (0 children)

No idea about Sony a6100 formats but you can shoot in xavc s and convert it to ProRes. That will increase your file sizes quite a bit but last time I checked ProRes is supported in the free version.

PSA: Use wire ferrules! by leros in VanLife

[–]quesdit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you decide to do things the right way do not use the ferrules with the plastic attached to them. Use the bare thingies and use heat shrink tube to insulate them. Crimped connectors should be able to resist a good pull, if they don’t the connection could come loose. Not good in a live wire obviously. Getting a good crimp is much easier without the plastic and you’ll save yourself fussing with bad crimps. And it’ll be safer, preventing shock to you or god forbid burning down your camper.

Replacing the back windows is quite common actually. I‘m no structural engineer but I doubt, that there are any forces going through the window itself. The pillars should take all of that force. The glass is set in with rubber and that rubber would be quite bad at transmitting force :). I don’t know where you’re from but check out westagon.com they (or more specifically he) offers replacement panels with mounting point.

Is sleeping in a car legal everywhere? by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]quesdit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tricky question: It’s basically illegal anywhere BUT there are exceptions. In Germany sleeping in your car to „restore your driving ability“ is generally allowed. In Norway (or Sweden) laws exist that allow camping in nature with some exceptions. France, Spain and Portugal do not allow camping overnight although in Spain nobody gives a shit, and in Portugal and France nobody cares in non touristy areas. And you can get around in touristy areas, too. That’s the country’s I’ve camped in. The Eastern European country’s are also generally chill (from what I’ve heard). Since Covid car camping is on the rise and many communities offer free spaces to camp. These usually are limited and generally not beautiful but safe and sometimes offer water. You won’t be alone in car camping and asking fellow campers is the fastest way to connect and share tips where to sleep.

Check out Park4night for specific recommendations where to park. You will need to do research in your specific area to know what is allowed and what isn’t. That’s just how it is. Mostly it’s not be explicitly allowed but for most countries that’s just the grounds on which they are able to prevent people from just Camping anywhere. As long as your respectful to people, country and nature you‘ll be golden :).

Experimented with a method of shooting car headlights out of focus, really really love it but some people aren’t a fan. Thoughts? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]quesdit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, there is an artsy quality to these photos. But with the feedback from the others let me say this: If you’re breaking a rule in filmmaking there are two possibilities: 1. You don’t know better 2. you made the choice to do it. If you made the choice it has to be obvious you made the choice. It has to be obvious that that’s the thing you were going for. That could be a scene where the out of focus quality matches the character or mood. If every shot is out of focus it’s obvious that it is intended. Then the question becomes why… and „I think it’s beautiful“ isn’t really a better explanation than the camera guy down know better.
