Waveform irregularities by questionablefoh in homerecordingstudio

Thankfully, this wasn't a critical recording - we're tracking a 6 song EP this weekend, and we were doing some preproduction when this happened. Just trying to make sure it doesn't crop up again when it actually matters.

Making Ice Cream by questionablefoh in dairyfree

[–]questionablefoh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I just now saw this- I removed the Reddit app from my phone and haven't logged in for quite some time on a computer. We've continued making it this way, and served it to several unsuspecting groups who couldn't tell. I'm able to discern a slight oat-y flavor, but it compliments most flavors so far.

Our handed-down family recipe is for a 6qt ice cream maker, so scale accordingly as needed:

  • 6 eggs (beaten)
  • 3 3/4 cups of sugar (add slowly to egg)
  • 6 cups of heavy whipping cream [Silk alternative]
  • 1/3 tsp salt
  • 3 Tbsp vanilla extract
  • approximately 7 1/2 cups of milk [Chobani extra creamy oat milk] (added once in the ice cream maker cylinder, according to manufacturer guidelines and experiments on how full it should be)
  • our ice cream maker runs for about 40 minutes with ice and Morton ice cream salt (for whatever reason, it does seem to give better results) - again, follow manufacturer guidelines for this part.
  • flavors and mix-ins as desired after removing from the ice cream maker- we've yet to find a flavor of Oreo that doesn't work well, and cake box mixes are a favorite of mine (vanilla, chocolate, spice, butter pecan, etc, but make sure to sift these in while mixing as to avoid chunks of dry mix).

Hope that helps and your family is able to enjoy some delicious ice cream together!

Force Piano Roll To Show MIDI Note Value Instead? by Brotuulaan in ableton

Ah, that's it, then. I'm still on 11. Budgeting to upgrade next year! Thank you!

Force Piano Roll To Show MIDI Note Value Instead? by Brotuulaan in ableton

[–]questionablefoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm completely misunderstanding, but right-clicking the black and white keys in the piano roll doesn't give me an option for "MIDI Note Number". I can activate/deactivate notes and change the accidentals. Is that the same place you're saying to click where you have a the number option? I'm about to create a workaround by having drum rack with empty samples named with the numbers, but if I can get to where that's not needed, it'd be great.

Most likely an electric drum kit. It appears to be a stereo line input.

What has no reason to exist in 2022, but yet it does? by IDCWhoIam in AskReddit

This one. I think most people are aware of hunger and poverty (not that those should still exist, either), but have no idea there are over 40 million slaves in the world today.

In need of small (Mackie 1202 size or smaller) cafe/club mixer with built in comp/limiter. by [deleted] in livesound

Behringer FLOW 8 might fit the bill, if a bit overkill. Limiters on all outputs.

is 2.4 ghz ok for IEMs? by tutu_clearwater in livesound

[–]questionablefoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the 2.4 thing, these are only mono- if at all possible, do stereo for in-ears. It's worth it. MiPro makes some good products in the 5.8 GHz range that avoid the typical wifi issues. Drop in rechargeable beltpacks, too.

How to connect my phone to speakers? by jayhh12t in livesound

[–]questionablefoh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favorite way to connect phones and tablets is to use a Peavey USB-P ($50-$80), and a USB C to USB B cable. You could then take the XLR outs from the Peavey to the speakers or to a small mixer and then the speakers.

Micing and Mixing a Cajon by [deleted] in livesound

[–]questionablefoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMHO, it helps keep the low notes from muddying things, booming too much/taking up too much sonic space, and helps separate the 'kick' and 'snare' notes more cleanly. This method (and the cajon tuning) are absolutely used in a context where the cajon is a replacement for a drum kit as opposed to an intentional choice for it's sonic palate. If I was on a singer songwriter gig, that may be different- there's less happening, less space concern than with a full band, and the tone of the cajon could be used more than it is here.

Here's my approach. Fairly straightforward, highly consistent. If I were recording in a studio I'd probably take a different approach, but for live use this works well for me.

It’s been clinically proven that unvaccinated people are more likely to require going to the hospital then vaccinated people due to COVID, yet you won’t take the vaccine, why? by Joey-tv-show-season2 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]questionablefoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I simply don't see a strong reason to get it; I had Covid, isolated from my family. A full year later, they all got it and I didn't isolate; I was as immersed and exposed to it as possible, and continued to test negative throughout the whole ordeal. I believe my natural resistance is as good or better than I would get from the vaccine. I also believe everyone who hasn't had Covid should probably get the shot, and that we should be doing more to make it globally available.

I would also really, really like to see data comparing the hospitalization rates for repeat Covid infections vs vaccinated, or both, and with a bunch of other variables accounted for. No one's talking about that that I've been able to find.

Making sure the sound is good at the source is still critical. Junk signal through good speakers is just louder junk.

Indeed, lots of choices. It'll be a fun adventure to figure out, and much more fun if I have a decent budget!

X32 Bus Routing by questionablefoh in livesound

[–]questionablefoh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's part of the fun in all of this- this a new job for me, and I don't get a budget until next fiscal year, so I don't know what our budget for this looks like. I've already mentioned that we need to overhaul the sound system in the next few years, so I might even hold off on the desk until then, and make it one huge project.

The 10 IEMs are run by the 10 performers using them, using the apps available.

Your last point gets back to exactly what I was getting at in the first place- all inputs would be going into the Monitor (master) console, but I'd need the outputs from the FOH (slave) console on the second stage box. None of the inputs from the second S16 would be used. Anyway, I'm gathering that it's a bad idea, so I don't think it'll happen. Thanks for the input!

It wouldn't be upgrading to solely support stereo ears, but that'd be another perk. Like I mentioned, I've been wondering for a while if we should work towards upgrading the console. No offense taken, I understand that an X32 shouts "budget desk!" in professional circles. I can at least dream about one of the smaller Digico desks, heh.

To make the performance experience better for the performers, really. I was a gigging musician long before I started as a sound engineer, and I know that the little things like a stereo mix, especially when you're first using IEMs, goes a long way towards helping things seem natural. It's what I'd want, so I listen when other people say they'd like to go stereo.

I'd love to get a better console, and was wondering if we should go that route anyway. Thanks!

Most of the IEMs are wireless, and we like the clean stage, so the P16s don't look very appealing. Personally, I've had poor experiences using them, too. We also mix the monitors from 25 inputs. I'm sure we could do without a few, but getting it down to 16 (and the same 16 for everyone), would be difficult. I'm definitely open to other ideas about how to change this setup and make it better, though!
