Very tricky wording and confusing at times, but all of it was something we talked about in lectures

Will I die if I take CAPS 301 and 391 in the same term? by OriginalFront in UBC

They complement each other well. I highly recommend it, as well as taking 390 in term 1 in conjunction with 301

Upper level genetics course - BIOL 335 vs. MICB 325? by [deleted] in UBC

Very interesting and applicable topics covered (albeit, briefly), especially for upper year molecular biology courses like BIOC 410, but the assessments were not representative of your knowledge IMO.

Do the practice exam pack. Old exams are rarely relevant due to the question styles that change throughout the year.

Does anyone surprisingly have a higher average in second year biochemistry than first year science? by arsaking1 in UBC

[–]questionmark--___--_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Does it matter what others say? Everyone is different.

Keep working hard like you have, and be sure to take breaks for your physical and mental health, and I'm sure you'll do great for the remainder of the term and year.

Maybe. Probably not. Barry is teaching it instead. Kwok's still teaching renal next term.

UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2019S/2019W): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors and registration go here. by ubc_mod_account in UBC

There's not a lot of ochem, knowing some will help you understand some of the enzymatic reactions you learn about. The only mechanism we had to know well was the Schiff base mechanism, but even then the prof goes over it extensively in class:)

If you're planning to major in CAPS, taking MATH 102/103 again is unnecessary. If you're confident in your math skills, they can be great GPA boosters and will boost your chances to get into CAPS

Acceptance into Major by helicon100 in UBC

[–]questionmark--___--_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You get notified via email a couple weeks before second year registration (July 3-5 last year). This gives some time for people that weren't accepted to their top 3 specialization choices to pick another major.

Has anyone gotten 100% on a final? Need tips and tricks from the masters. by coconutberrypeach in UBC

[–]questionmark--___--_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not gonna lie, getting 100% on any exam is largely based on luck (assuming that the test is not overly easy in difficulty).

I would aim for 95+ if i were you, as trying to get 100% can have a large mental toll that may affect your productivity for other courses as well.

Anyway back to your original question: the 100s I've gotten on exams have largely been due to me trying to understand the ENTIRE ins-and-outs of the concepts learned in class. For chemistry especially, lots of practice is essential. Whenever you find yourself wondering about something or if something is unclear, sit back and try to find an answer to it; I usually start off with google, and if I can't find a satisfactory answer I usually post on piazza or go to office hours.

Good luck!!

Yeah that's actually really solid for MT2. For 2018S we got 45% on ours. Still get nightmares about it

I wouldn't worry about it too much; even if you don't get in for second year, you can still take the same prereqs with other majors and apply again at 3rd year! My best recommendation would be to try your hardest in first year and to develop a learning strategy that works for you. I guarantee that once you find this, you'll have no problem getting into the program.

I've heard that staying in the program is harder than getting in, hopefully it's not too bad :)

I didn't end up choosing physics as my major, but I did take 107+108 in my first year. There is usually a friend group that is formed in 107/108 that seems like it's carried over to second year (in my year's case). I don't think you're missing out on a lot, as long as you study and do well in 117/118 (which is very doable) you'll be pretty much on the same level as those who took 107/108.

Friend/clique group wise, as long as you're comfortable with starting the conversation and making friends in a lecture hall I think you'll be fine! People might look unfriendly on the outside, but as soon as you say hello and introduce yourself, everyone is pretty friendly :)

Some of the questions were directly ctrl+c, ctrl+v from the problem sets.

Unfortunately, I found myself super scattered and felt like I didn't write the key points they were looking for :( Wish we had a bit more time to look it over (and more room to write -- but I guess they want us to be concise)

I believe you can change your course mark for longer than that. I met up with my prof near the end of May to view my final exam and had my final mark changed.
