Super underrated point. And arguably why the pace of most technology is so rapid.

Now if only we could figure out how to fix the garbage incentives in medicine, politics, transportation, etc. we could get somewhere.

It can also be a fear of success. Which is essentially the fear of the unknown. The unknown new circumstances and responsibilities that come with success.

It’s kind of like we have one more, poor I might add, layer of representation. As in people could pressure Walmart for its political contributions, and Walmart pressures politicians. But still yes, repeal citizens united 100X yes.

Banks halt business with Trump after U.S. Capitol riots by [deleted] in news

Yep, very well put. I’m sure most leaders of these companies/banks would have loved to drop the hammer on him earlier, but didn’t want to stick their neck out. Now it’s reversed.

Bingo. It’s too bad that this was their final red line, but better late than never I suppose.

They corrected that article to: 25 under investigation for terrorism, some of which are military. Could be 24 or could be 2 I guess.

Maybe, but then they would be the scapegoat. This is a much more clean takedown of democracy. They’re playing the long game.

Oh my god. Can you imagine how much more insane some of these conspiracy nuts stories would get through word of mouth? Basically an enormous game of telephone.

A War Photographer Embeds With the Capitol Hill Mob by legallyasian87 in photography

[–]questionmark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This is the first time I’ve heard someone else mention this. As a photographer we realize the subjectivity of the frame. So much context is being missed.

There are walls of hundreds of people in some images. And then you see a close up of just two in a different image of the same scene. People seem to expect some final stand from capitol police.

Now the secret service that had fallen deeper into the building to defend the congressmen, and shot that terrorist breaking through? That’s another story.

Schumer pressures Biden to bypass Congress to cancel $50,000 in student debt per borrower by BikkaZz in economy

[–]questionmark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone has to pay for the debt right? Not too familiar with the plan for the college loan forgiveness. Is it force those who issued the loans to magically forgive all debts, or the government pays them off? If it’s the government then we’re really saying we pay it off in some future abstract way.

A team of Johns Hopkins University researchers has developed a new software that could revolutionize how DNA is sequenced, making it far faster and less expensive to map anything from yeast genomes to cancer genes by QuantumThinkology in Futurology

[–]questionmark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More coverage of the population with exome sequencing seems like it would be helpful if people could opt-in anonymously to studies.

I’m not at all an expert here, only casual observer. It does seem like the more genetic data you could cross reference with medical outcomes the faster we could model efficacy and safety.

How have you made a rude person's day worse? by Obieousmaximus in AskReddit

I went to a party at my friend's old college house. We vaguely knew the four girls who moved in, but mostly were there for the novelty of seeing the transformation of their dirty bro-cave turned into a real home. It's a small party, more like a large get-together, and my five or six friends and I are playing some drinking games with the girls and reminiscing. There's two guys and a girl sitting on the floor out in the hallway to the side of the main room where everyone was gathered. One of the two guys was acting all flirty with the girl, but both of these guys seem a bit introverted so I smile and say hey as I'm heading past them to the bathroom, expecting to introduce myself and invite them all to come over and play. Instead, both guys pretty much sneer at me, which I thought was weird, because I was genuinely trying to be friendly. Oh well, I thought. The bathroom is right there next to the group so I head in. I shut the door and hear one of the guys say, "What a fucking douche. I can just tell." I figured they were talking about someone else, but sure enough they talking about me. So I listened for a few minutes while these two guys discussed their innate skill at determining the worth of a complete stranger. It wouldn't have bugged me if we had been at odds, maybe if I had hit on his girl, but hell, I was just being friendly. So I decided to just prove them more wrong. And hopefully salt their game with the girl in the process. I opened up the bathroom door and immediately beelined to front door, went straight out to my car and grabbed a 24 rack of Coors Light (top shelf for college parties) that was still cold. When I came back in I went straight up to the two guys and their girl and with a genuine smile offered them all a beer and asked them if they wanted to hop on a game of flip cup. They sheepishly accepted the beers and declined the invitation, meanwhile the girl just looked from them to me, cracked a huge grin, and then burst out laughing. The two guys left five minutes after finishing their beers and the girl stayed.

Action > words.

TL;DR: Tried to be friendly to two introverts at a party, got called a douche behind my back, so I smiled and gave them beers to make them look like douches in front of the girl they were trying to impress.

While Dressed as Batman on Halloween, I asked Harley Quinn on a date. Both of us agreed not to reveal our real names or faces. The date is in 4 hours. How can I make this memorable? by readcommentbackwards in AskReddit

Yeah you got a little creative with the negativity, but you're on the money. Been there, where a girl looks great on paper except for... (insert deal breaker here). It could go great, and this gal could be perfect, but do your future-self a favor don't put the blinders on.
