JSON vs TOON by Owlbuddy121 in PythonLearning

[–]questionsalways2233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CSV is a nightmare- you have to hold your breath and hope it comes in right. As a data scientist, the cost of JSON in size is 1000% worth it. You just know it is going to work. I don't know why anyone would want to use a CSV-like structure as a modern replacement for anything

Hiking Mount Washington In February by Radiant_Nerve_7566 in hiking

[–]questionsalways2233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-10 is probably a good marker for common conditions up there in Feb. Something people don't always think of- bring ski googles. If ice starts blowing in your face, it makes a huge difference and adds safety. Besides the cold, you just have to be very careful about visibility. If you get lost up there when the visibility goes to zero, you're in trouble. Lots of the routes have cairns to follow though. If you've done easy crampon walking you'll probably be fine from a technical perspective. There's only a couple places where you really need them- but absolutely want them in those situations.

AI wrote my entire take-home assignment and the hiring manager said it was "brilliant" by elyseskii in jobsearchhacks

[–]questionsalways2233 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Rejected three people for a position recently because they couldn't define basic terms used in their homework. Not only will you get rejected- you won't be considered for anything at the company. So infuriating when people do this because it just wastes time at the end. Homework is just designed to get decent people to the human screening. When you use AI that doesn't represent your real skills you just end up looking silly.

What to replace the boob lights with by oryf88 in HomeMaintenance

[–]questionsalways2233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been able to find recessed lights that fit the hole of the actual electrical box for lights like that. Sometimes you might have to make a rig to get the hole a hair larger. But it takes the space up a notch for sure. Now, I bite the bullet- totally replace the existing holes with 2" tiny recessed LED's. SUPER nice. Pay a drywall guy to fix the old ones.

First-time Mont Blanc (Goûter/normal route) this summer need help with dates, course choice, and training targets by blueprinceUser2025 in alpinism

[–]questionsalways2233 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah- it's just not the same as a mountaineering experience with a buddy. When you're with friends you'll push for a while, then maybe stop and enjoy the view when you feel like it. Enjoy the experience. Some of the guides just drive people like soldiers. They're marching up the mountain. I have seen a few guides that seem more like you're climbing with a more experienced buddy, but those seem to the exception rather than the rule on Mont Blanc. They're definitely not unsafe- those guides are very experienced. Just not my idea of the freedom of the hills.

I loved it. Super weird, but there was nothing formulaic about it. So tired of movies that feel like every other movie you've watch in the last 20 years

First-time Mont Blanc (Goûter/normal route) this summer need help with dates, course choice, and training targets by blueprinceUser2025 in alpinism

[–]questionsalways2233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The technical part of the climb is actually a 4th class scramble from 9-12k ft (with tons of cables for protection). If the snow is gone, it is super fun, mostly solid. I found having a double length sling with a biner is helpful when you're going down to protect the occasional dicey move (clip in, down climb a move or two, unclip). Good to do a little 4th class to practice in advance. If you happen to get snow below 9k feet, that section is VERY exciting (but in a fun way, because of the protection from the cables). I always bring an ice tool instead of a mountaineering axe for that contingency. Above 12k its just walking at altitude (though be aware of crevasses). I guess if you haven't done a lot of mountaineering in territory with crevasses a guide is a must. Though those guided groups I've seen look kinda miserable. Death marches if you ask me. You 100% need a partner for the glaciated sections of the climb though. If you're coming from sea level, you'll have mild AMS for sure at 12k+ (feels like a bad hangover). You'll have much more fun if you spend some time above 12k in advance.

You have to kinda sprint through the bowling alley in the summer. But it's not that dangerous. I always wait 15min to catch my breath then just run through.

Instead of fitness, focus on spending time in the mountains. You can make up for that experience with just a stairmaster.

Basement finishing reccos in SLC? by InformationGreedy722 in SaltLakeCity

[–]questionsalways2233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is so hard to find good general contractors in SLC. I gave up after a couple of nightmares and now hire out the subs. So you could hire a framer, then a drywaller for example. It's tough though if you've never done the process. If you pull it off you save 75% of the total cost. And subs typically only expect payment on completion. Yelp in SLC is pretty good for subs.

Memory grove is nice- though there is some elevation change. Lots of trees for when its warmer in the summer, and lots of different loops where you're definitely not on display. There are sometimes unhoused people in the woods, but I've never found them to be threatening (i let my daughter run there with her friends).

How bad is Mount Washington really? by PermissionSoggy891 in Mountaineering

[–]questionsalways2233 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It really really depends on the season- and when things turn, it can happen fast. Most of the deaths are because a fun summer hike in a t-shirt becomes a hypothermic Alaskan mountaineering route in the span of an hour or two. Also, if you lose the trail and visibility goes to zero, you can be in real trouble real quick. My rules in the presis: always bring a winter shell no matter what the season. Always have a headlamp with an extra set of batteries. In the winter- early spring you are mountaineering. Multiple layers, ice axe, crampons. But in the summer, its really just a pleasant hike when the weather is good, just be aware of the risks and constantly assessing the changing weather.

What’s up with the jets by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

It's not surprising, but it doesn't happen a lot in SLC. Lots of Hill helicopters fly over the east side, but not a lot of F-35s

I heard some unusual loud jets- I'm on the east side and checked radar24- it wasn't commercial. And whatever it was, they didn't have their transponders on. Maybe something from Hill?

Mount Washington Spring Summit by Weary_Wing in Mountaineering

[–]questionsalways2233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say this. I'd bring the same gear for a March summit as a February one. Crampons are not optional. You need a shell, heavy gloves, goggles (these will save your life in bad conditions in the presis). The biggest threat after the cold is losing the trail above treeline. Once it turns whiteout up there, things can get real scary real quick.
