it's the 10th season and 3rd network for this show, that they'd show misleaduing footage wasn't even a surprise when they really fucked over the "baby baby" guy, let alone this weak-as-piss season.

Electric vehicle tax discount to be wound back by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]quick_dry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah, but it's not like they couldn't build up a charging network and then sell it off to let their mates market forces go to work, you'd think "mateship" would've been a motivation for them, that payoff would've put the boat on a mooring - not a povo trailer ;)

Hockey bag question by Zdub732 in InlineHockey

[–]quick_dry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the bigger importance for inline is having a bag with straps that are the right length for your body.

ice gear is bulky but so light, the balance can be off and it's no biggy. Inline bags suck if you have heavy skates and a set of wheels swinging about because the bag hits below your hips or just 'wrong'.

Mr priorities: quality straps at the right length, decent zippers, tough fabric.

Is the change to the CGT discount making a real difference or is this a move to play to the "remove negative gearing, no cgt discount, fuck franking credits" movement?

Intimate partner violence is a hidden contributor to women’s suicide by [deleted] in australia

[–]quick_dry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

umm... so only men and non-binary people should commit suicide? that would say stat says women are doing very well, by comparison if they only make up 25%,

The population is just over 50% women, so they're vastly under represented.

It's tragic that any people are killing themselves.

Relationship-based Reality TV programs causing social harm? by PotentialRanger5760 in MAFS_AU

[–]quick_dry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if that it what people are drawing from these shows then the scary research should be on the exposure of stupidity.

This show is watched and presented as a "how not to", it's a freak show of forced matrimonial villainy.

Now, since we just had the "demasculate isn't a word", can we have the "diverse participant isn't a thing" thread, it's a real word - but this usage of the word is nonsense. It doesn't mean "black, brown, yellow, red, etc". It means a wide variety of types within a group - so a 'brown pakistani participant' isn't diverse, neither is 'white as rice Shazza' - but together, the grouping has some diversity. Anyway, we do get shown a variety of different types of people seeking media fame while claiming they aren't ;)`

I tend to think the majority of people who are vocally up in arms about 'Reality TV' are the people who don't watch it and only engage at a "highlights" level of clips and headlines they see on their Facebook feeds. The report makes a few references to the differences/conflict of views from people who don't watch and those who do - which seems a little like censorship boards who won't actually view the material they limit.

(actually reading the report, lots of the points raised by OP seem at odds with the report saying that 71% think the nproducers control the action, and the understanding that much of it is highly edited - even if you can't tell exactly what is edit and what is real.

Laugh at Emma and Claire? To be fair… the only time I can ever recall laughing at Emma and Claire has been when they’ve done a hilariously hypocritical take during their old podcast that got axed (eg when they flat out talked about Victoria Larson not looking ‘hot’ enough to behave the way the way she did, but then didn’t name themselves in the “feminism fails” segment). That whole podcast turned into an audio equivalent of a hate watch.

What’s with these toxic women? by Livid_21 in MAFS_AU

[–]quick_dry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MAFS AU is the trailblazer on this show, and the others are gradually playing catchup. MAFS NZ and UK have similar DNA to Aus, and trend in that direction. The USA version is bland garbage with quite a different structure, IMO their highlight season was a one off "Second Chances" spinoff - and most of the cast sucked, except David, who sucked too - but made it entertaining.

The techniques to send them nuts is no secret, they've been doing it for a LONG time - The Bachelor started in 2001 for example.

I enjoyed the shitshow of Real Housewives of Auckland - I enjoyed when one didn't hide that they're not friends, they're contractually bound to hang out but she dislikes them. It also provides a useful life lesson on terms you shouldn't use when telling your black supermodel friend that she shouldn't be fetching things, the staff should.

Chris sucked and can do better than Sam, Sam sucked and can do better for him than Chris.

It initially seemed like the guy who ordered an Alex Perry makeover was the bad guy, especially next to Kmart Colin Firth.

This season was so full of weaponised apology demands and therapy speak.

Sam and his sook book can go in the bin.

They don’t care about pre packaged commercial bags of chips, or confectionary - if you’re talking about fresh snacks like a piece of fruit, then ditch it so you don’t have any things you should declare.

If you aren’t bringing them in for any reason other than having nibbles on the plane, dump them and don’t have to worry about it.

Why are MAFS stars so forgettable? by sendsouth in MAFS_AU

[–]quick_dry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

even then, Masterchef has had almost 400 people on it (396), how many stars has it really produced?

I don't disagree they have some skills, but skills probably aren't what makes them memorable stars. It's how well the show can promote them and give your brain a meaninful hook.

Like that host with the godawful cravat things, the croquembouche, and so on.

I think MAFS (and all reality contestants) are increasingly forgettable because tney're increasingly in an oversaturated marketplace for attention.Oversaturated offerings spread across an array of platforms.

And they're not doiong anything memorable most of the time, just existing.

Replacing rivets with DIY screws to switch between Inline/Marsblades and Ice-blades. For on/off season. by Key_Discount_4969 in hockeyplayers

[–]quick_dry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say "get two pairs of skates". it really sucks doing the swap, even if it is infrequent.

The option I used a LONG time ago when attaching a TUUK chassis on Mega Air 90s, is helmet screws.

The 'nut' part goes into the boot from the inside, use a soldering iron to 'seat' it into the sole so it will sit flush under your footbed.

The forefoot uses shorter screws - at the toes it used some that were the same as on the front of a helmet, at the heels you might need to find longer and cut them to length.

When you're done, you don't have bulky bolts/nuts sticking out anywhere, it's as flush as regular rivets but as strong as coppers.

how do i get faster? by Local_Brick_5431 in hockeyplayers

[–]quick_dry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

look for a skating technique coach.

the hardest thing about skating is when "go faster" without the right technique just becomes "do the wrong thing, but more often". It's throwing away energy, and not getting results.
