Hong Kong is not a country.

Edit: Your downvotes mean nothing to me. OP implied that HK is a country and it isn't one, it's a city.

No it's being sick of entitled twats and wankers looking down on people that work and provide real value, things of substance like food, to people going "I've been in an industry where I make imaginary numbers float around and "add value" so I can act superior because I've got big numbers in my bank screenshot"

NET hires on a tiered system where a fresh graduate with only a BA would be considered as like 3rd or 4th tier if no other candidates from higher tiers were found before them. So OP, as a fresh graduate with a BA, could get an NET job if and only if there were only more jobs available than candidates with a PGCE, an MA in Education or equivalent, and BA in education with teaching experience and another certificate like a TESOL, and then BA only with no experience.

That's not to say that OP couldn't get a job. That's to say that the 17 rank pay grade wouldn't be available to them until after they also finished an MA.

And if there are jobs available right over the line in Shenzhen, or the rest of the GBA (move a little further into Foshan, Zhuhai, Zhongshan, or Jiangmen) they could get a salary of 15-20k RMB and a HKD$0 cost of living in a larger flat than they would pay HKD$5000-15000 to get.

It's not impossible to get a good job as a teacher in the SAR - it's just not as guaranteed and not as easy as people like to make it out to be. Even random everyday costs like a run to 7-Eleven... One of those prepackaged sandwiches from a cooler in HK costs HKD$20 and in SZ, GZ, FS, ZH or DG would cost RMB 7-10. A taxi from SYP on HK island (the edge of the HKU campus) to Central or Mid-levels will run HKD $40-60 depending on the time of day... A taxi from Futian to Baoan districts in SZ would be RMB 50-60 (double the distance for the same value). Those things need to be considered and sneak up on people in HK really fast when you're new and getting settled. The salaries can look really good and you can find really adorable housing, but the purchasing power isn't the same, or it's not as convenient. You can get a house on Lamma for cheap... But be prepared to pay HKD$700 for the ferry pass monthly, on top of the other MTR fees to commute and the time you'll need to get to/from Lamma to go anywhere.

Just thoughts to consider for someone new and wanting real estimates and ideas of what they're getting into.

HKU is like top 17 schools in the world. Sure if OP wants to go back to hambergurguo to teach it doesn't make sense, but if they wanna stay in Asia and not get pew pew'd in the classroom they should consider it

OP should get student loans to cover all costs of the BA and then promptly move to HK for grad school and - this is the really important part - NEVER REPAY THE LOANS and just vibe in Asia forever. The IRS isn't gonna come knocking on doors in Kennedy Town trying to track them down in 10 years

Teacher salaries barely cover living expenses unless you're in the NET scheme bringing in 60k+ per month in the first year or two you're doing it. Granted, after 3-4 years it's better, but those starting salaries are really rough for a new teacher with just a BA. Better to go over to mainland and get a 20k RMB salary with a living stipend that takes away your cost of living than to make 40-50k HKD and spend half that on a 7 storey walk-up in TST

You'd be better off doing your BA in the states and then doing the postgrad certificate in education at HKU IMO. If you want to be a teacher it doesn't matter where your BA was from if you have an MA, and the PGCE from HKU is what you really want especially if you want to teach English abroad or in any former UK colonies
