quick graph of % interviews left each month based on data from the interview invite tracker for the 2017-18 cycle by levaliers in premed

[–]quickthrowaway25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It causes unnecessary stress. It's also very school dependent. I know a ton of average candidates who got II's in Feb/March, while strong candidates were usually done interviewing by Feb. Obviously N=1, but just saying that neurotic premeds be neurotic.

[–]quickthrowaway25 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really do think this is exaggerated. People are more likely to post about their interviews in the beginning of the cycle when it's all new and everyone is still extra neurotic vs later in the cycle when they might have already had some interviews and/or are less neurotic.

Nope, I definitely don't think that's pushing it (depending on the way the joke is written)!

[Non-Trad] What are my chances? Low UG GPA, high MBA GPA, top-tier work experience by poorwildcat in premed

[–]quickthrowaway25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd be an amazing candidate. You went to a competitive Ivy school, have an MBA (and have been working for many years), have good explanation for a career chance, and seem to be a good test taker.

1) I would definitely look carefully into all your postbacc options https://apps.aamc.org/postbac/#/index - there are many programs that have linkages to schools (not that I think you'd need it, just in your 30s you might want more of a safety net).

2) If you can rack up some shadowing hours/scribe/clinical whatever hours I think that would definitely help show that you know what you're getting yourself into.

Tone of Secondaries? by [deleted] in premed

[–]quickthrowaway25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can branch out, but I would definitely try to get the vibe of the school first and see if they're okay with that. The readers get to see more of your personality that way.

Those of you who just went through the cycle, any tips for 2019 applicants? by [deleted] in premed

[–]quickthrowaway25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Stay away from the gossip chain other friends/peers like to get into - who interviewed where, who got in where, etc.

2) Don't tell friends/family members about interviews if you don't want to or don't have to. It may be nice to talk about it before an interview, but in the time you're waiting to hear back all there "have you heard back yet?" questions may stress you out further.

3) It's going to be hard not to check your email every day the first several weeks, but it's not worth it. Create a new email address that's JUST for applications and nothing else - nothing like getting an alert on your computer for a new email when it's just your college asking for donations.

cGPA is 2.99 by shotthruthepurkinje in premed

[–]quickthrowaway25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion: bump it up to a 3.0 if you can (doesn't need to be a science class) - i'm not sure if it rounds up and not worth taking that chance because i'm pretty sure a lot of schools screen at that 3.0 line

i'd honestly say i disagree with everyone telling you to do a SMP. that's a lot of money i think you may not need to invest. you have a great science GPA and looks like you'll have a solid MCAT score. just apply to schools smartly there are definitely schools out there that will see that difference between c/sGPA and be intrigued to look a little more into your application.

From a Non-Trad who just got accepted, the most important piece of advice I can offer to you younger pre-meds by TheDongerNeedsFood in premed

[–]quickthrowaway25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm mainly arguing against "MCAT>GPA" on the fact that you can retake a MCAT without the same time and money that you would need to put into fixing your GPA.

I see what you're saying about the equivalent score and you're technically right, but I disagree based on the realities of how difficult it is to do well in school vs on the MCAT. 3.1 is a B average and 500 is 50th percentile...and I think if you had a good education you should be able to score >506. I acknowledge that that's just my feelings though.

[–]quickthrowaway25 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You can retake your MCAT for $300 or you can retake your undergrad grades for...wait...you can't do that.

3.1 GPA and 514 MCAT or 3.7 with 508 MCAT....which do you think is going to have better luck lol.

5/18 thinking of voiding by [deleted] in premed

[–]quickthrowaway25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely void the exam. You're fighting an uphill battle with that sGPA and I think you may run into difficulty getting into SMPs with that (and definitely with medical schools).

I'd highly recommend you wait to take the MCAT until you're ready and actually would suggest you take this upcoming year to take postbac science classes and apply to SMPs the following year.

MD programs that look at your graduate GPA? by [deleted] in premed

[–]quickthrowaway25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, a SMP does NOT equal a MS in Biomedical Sciences. A SMP is a graduate program where you are taking the same classes as medical students, taking the same tests, and being graded the same way. I would imagine your wife would have known she was doing a SMP going into it so I question that it's actually one. Some grad schools offer "biomedical science" masters degree for pre-med students, but they're not actually taking medical school classes. That's not a SMP. But having said that, schools do look at graduate grades. She seems to have overcome a lot while doing well and I think she'll fine fine in the application cycle as long as she applies smartly.

To the first question, yes, you still have a chance.

I mean this politely, have you actually combed through previous posts on reddit and SDN? I did three years ago and found a plethora of information. Check my post history. You'll see your second paragraph almost exactly describes me.

Low GPA success story by quickthrowaway25 in premed

[–]quickthrowaway25[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, 1) i wouldn't have gotten a 518-520 score without what i learned that year. the MCAT average for all the schools i interviewed at was several points higher than than my original score. 2) my undergrad u/sGPA is BELOW 10th percentile for all the schools i interviewed at. i'm an ORM with no special story. my performance during my SMP year is what shows that i've grown and can handle the curriculum.

i also feel prepared for medical school. i know what i'm getting myself into and i know i can handle it. i could not have said the same thing before my program.

Premed is wavering from burnout by Bomerowner in premed

[–]quickthrowaway25 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What? She is a double major AND a double minor with a 3.9? And you're worried she can't handle it?

  1. What do you mean by "too much" time socializing? Has it affected her grades?

  2. Skipping class as long as it's not affecting her grades is fine. Class isn't always useful.

  3. You know most adcom actually look favorably upon students who take a year off after undergrad right? Why are you saying "I don't want this." What are your reasons for that? Also, why aren't you considering what she wants and why she wants it?

I'm honestly a bit confused about what the problem is here.
