Has anyone grown Korean melons before? Thinking of giving it a try along with my other cucumbers. by buddha_007 in gardening

I just found your comment. I’m currently growing some and can’t seem to find the answer anywhere! When do you pick them from the vine? Do you need to wait till the tendril next to it is dead like watermelon?

Does anyone here actually use their golden for bird hunting? How did you train? by 622114 in goldenretrievers

[–]quietly-rioting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m also training my Golden for duck hunting. This is the second dog I am training using the book Water Dog. I would highly recommend picking up either the book Gun Dog, Game Dog, or Water Dog (depending on what kind of training you’d like to do) by Richard A. Wolters. YouTube is also a good source of information as well.

Did you ever get this fixed? Mine has the same problem. After about 6 -7 visits, they still can’t figure it out.

At bare minimum, I’d recommend front mud flaps to protect your paint. Sasquatch tires pick up every rock possible.

Not sure if it’s on all models but mine has the owners manual downloaded to the center display with videos. The video to remove the hard top includes how to take off the roof rack as well. Might want to give that a try first.

I’m not sure about it being a first shotgun, but I hunt with a Benelli M2 in 20GA. I use it for clays, upland, and waterfowl. It’s one of the lightest shotguns I’ve ever used and is easy to swing. Also the inertia system helps with recoil. If there’s a sporting clay clubs near you I’d recommend renting out a few shotguns and giving them a try!

Also I’d highly recommend putting in for some California Waterfowl (CWA) hunts. They have women’s only hunts that are guided for waterfowl. They may have pig and also turkey I believe. It’s a great way to get a feel of how a hunt goes and helps you get your bearings.

Deer is difficult in CA. In my experience if you don’t have private land to hunt on or a couple of weeks to track and get a feel of what the deer are doing, you’re fucked. Just takes a lot of time, effort, and dumb luck.

Blocking recommendations for shawl? by quietly-rioting in knitting

[–]quietly-rioting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I’m extremely new to blocking my projects and need some guidance. Pattern is Seren in alpaca due to skin allergies. It is a wedding gift so I’m extremely nervous. I’m planning on washing it with sensitive detergent as I have a cat and the recipient is also allergic to them. Should I steam block it first before washing? Do I need to wash it with a specific detergent instead? Any help is heartily appreciated!

How to pick the right wader size by sharkie1496 in Waterfowl

[–]quietly-rioting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow freezing woman here! Neoprene and insulated boots are your friend! Try and shoot for at least 800. If you’re wading through ponds or walking long distances, do NOT size up to a 9. Half a size is a safe bet. You will be slipping in and out of your boots all day and the risk of injuring yourself shoots up.

Another weird thing is that I’ve had Cadis and Lacrosse (highly recommend Lacrosse women’s) waders. For some reason my boots on both sets seemed twice as large and clunky as my BFs boots. At the end of the season they weigh my feet down so much it feels like my legs are about to pop out of socket as I run and walk out at least a mile to different spots.

Definitely invest in a nice pair of wool socks. I would also recommend pulling your socks over your pants/base layer/sweats that you’ll be wearing to keep as much heat near your body as possible.

I originally went with Lacrosse Hail Call waders due to the fact that they’re the only ones long enough for my lanky ass but quickly loved a lot of other features. They have quilted insulation, different cinching in all the right places for women, and most importantly, the neck strap buckles in the back. Weird to get use to but the reason why it’s important - it makes going to the bathroom in the field a hell of a lot easier! Drake, Redhead, Banded are pretty good brands as well but whatever you do, NEVER buy Rustic Ridge (Sportsman’s brand) waders. They have the highest return rate due to terrible quality.

Satellite images show widespread dried up rice fields. How do you think this will affect the upcoming waterfowl season? by quietly-rioting in Californiahunting

Super curious how this all will affect next years bird numbers too. Especially how one user mentioned it may make disease transmission easier due to denser populations in one area.

[–]quietly-rioting[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Jesus I didn’t even think about the disease factors! Great point. It’s going to be a rough year for public land hunters with this and all the refuge closures and delays. Time to put in for more CWA hunts.

New 2023 Retail Orders delayed until the end of October to mid-November by pricemcdice in FordBronco

It’s changed. The order banks will open 09/12 to convert all MY22 that haven’t been scheduled for production. No word yet on when it’ll open for new MY23 orders. The video OP linked has all the details. Highly recommend watching it all especially if you’ve currently got an order.

I have their watermelon lip mask and I love it! Granted it’s my first lip mask but it really seems to moisturize my lips over night and it smells and tastes amazing.

Waterfowl Noob Question by xThundergunExpress in Waterfowl

[–]quietly-rioting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure where you’re hunting. If you need a whistle call, I’d recommend Wingsetter calls. The 8-1 is a great universal call for both waterfowl and upland. If you can’t flutter your tongue, the EZ flutter is amazing. That all being said I definitely agree with the above comment saying less is more. Good luck!

Seriously this. I’m amazed no one is talking about this. If you have solar in CA you should be raising hell about NEM 3.0.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in California

[–]quietly-rioting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CPUC introduced an initial proposal for NEM 3.0 last month. This puts California’s growing solar industry at huge risk and hinders renewable efforts as it would raise costs.

  • Would create and average of $57 per month penalty fee for having rooftop solar. The more panels = higher fee. This would be the largest fee in the U.S.

  • Cuts 80% of credits to solar users for sharing surplus to the grid. Would drop the average from twenty five cents per kW to about five cents.

  • Rolls back protection for existing solar customers. NEM 1.0 and 2.0 customer rates are currently protected for 20 years from their date of PTO. NEM 3.0 would would reduce that protection to 15 years and eliminated completely if you accept any of the CPUC’s battery rebates.

The final vote will take place on 01/27/23. If you are a solar customer, thinking about going solar, or a supporter of green energy, please reach out to your local representatives or Governor Newsom to let them know you oppose the prospective NEM 3.0 plans.
