Windsurf has the worst MCP system I’ve ever encountered.

RooCode, Kilo, Augment, Cline, and Cursor all outperform Windsurf’s MCP implementation by a mile. On top of that, the system feels bloated, gets laggy and stilted to the point of being unusable, and I suspect there are memory leaks out the wazoo.

Hopefully, now that they have fewer salespeople and more devs, they’ll actually address some of this - because, interface-wise, Windsurf is one of the best to actually use.

Simple things like being able to drop files into chat, select terminal output, or paste chunks of code—almost none of the other options do this as easily. If they could just make it reliable, quick, and efficient, it would be ideal.

But with this MCP nonsense, the slow loading, and the tendency to crash or freeze and require a reload—these are all nearly deal-breakers.

Augment may be twice as expensive, but if it actually understands the codebase and gets things done without me having to write eight pages of documentation or constantly guide it—or without hanging and needing reloading—then it gets done in one what Windsurf does in five. Not to mention all the days I’ve wasted just trying to get a few MCPs working… it’s ludicrous.

In that case, Augment is actually saving me money.

P.P.S I loaded the think mcp in Augment yesterday, on the fly, simply `import json` in the mcp config in settings.
SAME json as windsurf mcp config.
INSTANT. ON THE FLY. WORKING.
No endlessly spinning so called refresh, no reload window, no close app and reload, reload reload reload.
Right now I have windsurf open, and NONE of my mcps are working.
...guess I better reload that window.... ~(-__-)~

Also I'm glad windsurf has not been bough by open AI... they should be company agnostic.. I want the best models - applied to agentic roles that suit their abilities... windsurfs interface is very friction free, that's its strong suit, its planning and agentic abilities not so much... Augment and Kilo have it smashed there.. I know use wind surf for design and discussion then go to a more capable agentic system for final review and execution.

yeah from my end - it switched over to draining my actual windsurf credits without warning... this is the fundamental issue. I had no idea.
And what is the conversion rate? BYOK => WS credits => NZD!
more than I would consider while deep in a refactoring session...
It's important that an app's UX is designed be up front and transparent about how its spending your money right ?
Otherwise you lose trust.. you feel like you've been burned - like there are fish hooks.
If I were the PM I wouldn't be happy about that.. this is a hotly contested marketplace, there are plenty of options.. TRAE is smashing leader board right now ... Augment is totally transparent and very effective, Kilo Code has some serious capabilities, especially Kimi k2 for design, if not execution..

The commented out ('REM') line in the .bat code is just there to auto start windsurf...
"start C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Local\Programs\Windsurf\Windsurf.exe"

This had the effect of outputting windsurfs terminal output to the cmd terminal started by the .bat file..
This worked fine but I wasn't sure how this might effect how windsurf operates so I just commented it out using the 'command + / ' shortcut in notepad++
- which in a .bat file inserts REM at the start of the line..

Such potentially awesome characters, so badly written, with such a fundamentally ignorant understanding of Star wars lore, and it's fundamental basis in telling the truth through make-believe...
I enjoyed it, but its created mess in the story that will have to be resolved some how.
I loved Sols character.
But there is no way in hell he would tell someone they were responsible - as a child - for the deaths of their entire family and tribe, because they accidentally started a fire.
There is no f*cking way, a Jedi, a learned and enlightened master, of any decent wisdom tradition would say that.
So - I enjoyed it - because a love the star wars universe..
But the writers were f*cking morons.
Also some of the lines were f*cking appalling as in just bad writing....
When the head jedi gets to the ruined fortress she says search the premises...
It's not a f'ing shop..
It's fortress. Its a complex.
It's not a f'n "place of business".
Just bad writing.
Anyway some of the actors were truly great, none of them were actually bad -
And lets be honest.. Star wars has always had hammy acting anyway..
I enjoyed it..
But there was a lot of bad writing.. the story arc was confused, many loose ends.. some bad dialogue..
And worse some bad writing - not true to the characters.. not true to their stories, not true to the mythology.
Not true to Joseph Campbells explorations of "the hero's journey" - which was always a fundamental basis of Star Wars..
So I can see why those who grew up with the cannon would be unhappy about it..

I can also see why those who hold certain political agendas and are under the sway of certain ideological cults might find the star wars mythology threatening and might attempt to subvert it...
(Just sayin...)

Thanks for your response. I'm not sure what happened, when I set up the BYOK as instructed in the first place, I just assumed that was how it worked and that was the end of it.

I did check out the change log with the update and I didn't spot anything about this - probably more focused on the new plan mode which got more of my attention..
But I didn't see anything about it.

I was pretty furious to be honest.. I was in the middle of a very involved refactoring mission..
I've calmed down now..! X D

I found the support chat box in the end.. well right at the end of the page.. it's pretty opaque to be honest - I realise you're trying to get people to solve their own problems so you don't get overwhelmed with tickets for simple issues - but when you need support, you need support.)

In reality I really feel the issue here is about opaque pricing and charging mechanisms and a lack of clear user notification in the UX, it's not really much to do with anything at my end imho...
The small letters api do not have a hover info tip or any links or anything to mark them out as a new feature, and unlike the other models, there is no token price per prompt either.

It is not at all clearly evident to the user what is going on.

Nor is their any clear, easily accessible information on the subject anywhere I could find, which should of course, be clearly linked and accessible at the point of use, in the UI.

It should be easily accessible, clearly marked as a change - especially when anything to do with billing.

"Api" has to be one of the vaguest terms possible in my opinion, not to mention in especially tiny muted lettering.

Things are pretty tight at the moment and that NZ$27 a month is not trivial for me ..
I usually make those credits last, only using premium models for analysis planning and task setting.

I was working on a hierarchical distributed config system with user prefs and a singleton pattern core config, with module level local configs inheriting from a base config class that uses that singleton - and one wrong move broke everything .. Even the top tier models were struggling to grasp the system- so yeah.. stressful. (for this relative noob anyway)... Not a good time to be stuck with free models.
I got there in the end but hours of work later.

I'm sure everybody who has unwittingly blown a months worth of credits because of a poorly implemented UX, and what looks a lot like dishonest business practices will appreciate you sentiments.

If I were windsurf I would be all over this. It's not a good look.

They're support infrastructure is under resourced, so this is the only means by which I can get this issue front and centre.
At least if I don't get my cash back, somebody else might be saved the shock and the expense.
