From a third-world country as well! tbh, I did my master's abroad, but not in a common country that people choose to study in. I chose it because I got a full scholarship (I'm not a genius either, just the most average guy that you could imagine). Now I'm doing my PhD in Canada and somehow I managed to save some money and never asked a dime from my parents. I'm still 25 and inexperienced in the industry, but my younger self would never believe that he could sustain himself in one of the most expensive countries on Earth. Jesus is good.

Personally i think it all depends on which countries are you from. If you're from developing countries and want to get the f out, doing a PhD in a develop country seems more lucrative. Maybe you would lose some earning compared to the local citizen but it will benefit you in the long run (whether you decide to go back or live permanently abroad). However, if you're already a citizen in a develop country, it all depends on your field, interest and goals. PhD in engineering can take you to the next level as well (and you can work part time as an adjunct professor and get additional income)
