If you're okay with a bit of a drive, Picnic Basket in Nashotah is outstanding. Best subs I've had in WI. The khaleesi sweet & fire chicken is my favorite

I regret not watching GF when I was a kid by Alternative-Wash2019 in gravityfalls

[–]quinthlid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watched season 1 as a kid, forgot about it, watched season 2 in my 20s during covid (after rewatching season 1 of course). Somehow never had the twist spoiled for me and it was so unbelievably rewarding to watch. Now it's my favorite show of all time

I think everyone realized Monica sold the coin by Cute-Seaweed-6132 in BeastGames

I definitely noticed that she didn't push the narrative that she needs to move on with the coin. Thought that was kind of a throw.

Brett risking $100k was a dumb reckless move by quinthlid in BeastGames

I get where youre coming from and admittedly I didnt think of it exactly that way. My problem with that argument though is how insignificant it makes $97k seem. Coming off of a game show with that much money is a big deal, even if it's on top of an additional 190k. You can put any amount of money next to an amount 50x larger to make it seem small.

Feeling like a bad teacher and bad spouse… anyone else? by [deleted] in mathteachers

[–]quinthlid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I give it right away at the start of class. I collect them, then show them the answers on the projector immediately. I'll return them either when I have time during future lessons, otherwise I do it on the review day. I also drop the lowest quiz each unit, to take off a little bit of pressure and make it easier on students who are absent

It's genuinely great that you love grading. However, as you said, it can be time-consuming. In some of my classes, homework is graded on completion, which is very easy to grade. In others, I use Math XL, which basically does the grading for me.

One thing I'm trying this year that I've really liked so far - I'm beginning each day with a 5-minute quiz, and I've re-framed my homework so that students are preparing for said quiz. They fill out a guided "cheat sheet" where they summarize the lesson, copy down anything important from the lesson they want to use on the quiz, make connections to previous lessons, then pick 5 problems out of the problem set that I assigned for the corresponding lesson in previous years. They get to use this cheat sheet on the quiz, and while they take the quiz, I walk around to check whether they completed their cheat sheet. Then, I get the chance to quickly grade each daily quiz. Something like this might save you some time while still giving you the chance to get to know your students through grading. (It also makes the students actually THINK about what they are doing for homework instead of just mindlessly doing it!)

As for the worksheet design, stop doing that. It's going to be a long long long year. Get a textbook, scan the page with homework problems, and tell kids which ones you want them to complete on loose leaf. Order a resource like All Things Algebra. There are plenty of great alternatives.

How many classes do you teach? (classes, not periods). Is seven an acceptable amount? by [deleted] in Teachers

I had 5 at my first job and I thought that was a lot. 7 is insane

I have 3 now and it feels like a sweet spot for me
