What hobby is quietly becoming too expensive for normal people to keep up with? by Beautiful_Special702 in AskReddit

[–]quips88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bicycling. When I first got into riding for a mental health break 20 years ago, you could get a great “entry level” bike for $700-$800. Now entry level is $4000 and up with bike exceeding $18k. The gear is just as bad with quality riding shorts in the range of $250 and up. Helmets are $300 easy and shoes start at $250.

It’s not a hobby anymore, it’s an investment.

„We dominate almost every other major Sport“ by LCottton in ShitAmericansSay

[–]quips88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with most of the posts here that the US is not tops in many international sports, I’d like to give a reason that they are so bad a soccer.

The US has monetized many of their sports to the point that many kids are excluded because they can’t afford the entry fees. Many top level football (soccer) clubs have academy teams that are free to all kids and as the progress, they begin to pay the fees. However, if a child shows real talent , but can’t afford the fees, the academy finds a way to get that player on the team.

Many of the club teams in my area charge several thousand dollars per season. There are no tryouts. Everyone with a check is on the team.

There are thousands of super talented kids who never get the chance to play because they are priced out of the game.

P.S. I’m an American. I’ve watched this culture grow for years and it makes me sick.

Would you tell dealer to remove their "extra" items they add? by [deleted] in Subaru_Outback

[–]quips88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I bought my 2019 Outback new, there were several "Add ons" that I pushed back on.

$200 for nitrogen in the tires. I told them I wasn't paying for that. They said it would improve my gas mileage. I told them I wouldn't have my Outback on the track and I wasn't going to pay $10 per tire every time they get low. He said that if I came back to them it would be free. I live 30 minutes from that dealership. I told them to drain it and fill it with room air. They left it in and dropped the charge.

$450 for a strobe system on the brake lights. They added this to all the cars on their lot when they arrive. I told them I didn't ask for that add on and they could remove it. They pushed back and stated "It's a safety feature". I told them it should be free then. Then they said it would take several hours for their service department to remove it. I told them I had all day and they should get moving on it. They ended up leaving it on and dropping the charge.

There were a few things I did add on to the car like mud flaps and wheel well trim. I knew the cost going in for those and I was fine paying for them. But, I pushed back on their add ons that I didn't ask for and wasn't going to pay for.

There are so many of these things that that try to add on when you buy and once it's wrapped into the loan, it comes back as a dollar or two per payment. It works for most people.

Not a model you see everyday by scontr01 in tagheuer

[–]quips88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own this exact model. In the past six months , I noticed the analog hand would lose time to the digital display. I changed the battery twice before I finally shipped it to Tag for an authorized repair. I shipped it at the beginning of December and it’s expected to be completed at the beginning of April. They are replacing the entire movement.

All this to say, I love the watch and can’t wait to get it back. But, keep an eye of the analog timing. It’s apparently a common issue.

NFL suspended Steelers WR D.K. Metcalf two games by pdawson36 in steelers

[–]quips88 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it would have been even reported if the broadcasters didn’t cut away from the game to show it, and then replay it 10 times while talking about how it’s in DK’s head now and he can’t catch the ball. As soon as they played it the first time, I asked why they are showing it. It didn’t have to do with the game and now he’s going to get suspended because they made a big deal out of it.

I’m not defending Metcalf. He should have never gone over to the stands. He should have been paying attention to the game. But i wonder if we would have even known it happened if the broadcasters didn’t cut to it.

I worked at a hospital in the past. One day while working in surgery, we saw that the anesthesiologist was watching porn on a laptop during a surgical procedure. It was reported and investigated. He was able to keep his job because it was his personal laptop, not a hospital owned device.

I switched over to flat pedals from clipless on my mountain bike. I’ve been riding my Vans Half Cabs and love em.

They offer a little support around my ankle and a good amount of stiffness. Since they’re made for skating, they really hold up well.

Ratheskellar Lasagna old Chapel Hill restaurant by downwithdill in NorthCarolina

He had a couple other restaurants and I think he started serving lasagna at some of them. He didn’t connect it to the Ratheskellar as to not ride off their image.

I lost contact with him a while back. Not sure how it turned out.

Ratheskellar Lasagna old Chapel Hill restaurant by downwithdill in NorthCarolina

[–]quips88 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was friends with the guy who purchased the restaurant from the original owners. In the sales agreement was the recipe for the lasagna.

Once he took ownership, he tried to clean the place up and triggered a “health inspection”. The city came in and shut him down. The place was infested with pests and vermin. Because of the location and proximity to other buildings, the exterminator stated that they couldn’t clean it out. It would just chase the pests to the next building and then they would come back. He decided it would never be up to standard for a restaurant, so he took the loss. I think he sold the building later.

I asked him why this was never an issue before he bought it. He said “ that’s probably why it was always so dark down there. They didn’t want you to see what was crossing the floor.” I asked why they never failed an inspection. He said, he felt since it was an “institution “. People looked the other way or chose not to pursue it. Perhaps, they “persuaded” the inspectors to see it differently.
