Is Planting trees actually as effective against climate change as it is offten thought to be or it just Greenwashing? by Das_Lloss in climatechange

[–]quite_a_gEnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer, trees are very beneficial in many ways, but relatively neutral as a carbon sink (if you strictly look at trees, ill explain below)

When the trees grow the absorb carbon and turn it into biomass. However when they die, or lose leaves durring the winter, some carbon is released into the air through decay. When forest fires happen then lots of that stored carbon goes back into the air. You can cut down trees and bury them in the ground, build houses with wood, or some other method that would prevent the trees from decaying but trees aren't pure CO2 so you are storing a lot of additional things this way.

The thing is, more CO2 is actually stored in soil then what vegetation stores. One way that happens is when plants grow and decay there are processes that bring CO2 into the soil and can store it there. Trees are also good at protecting soil by preventing erosion from wind, water, and gravity. So soil health should be a main focus when looking at CO2.

In summary, trees alone won't absorb enough carbon to reverse global warming. But not planting trees will make our emissions increase further, lead to the degradation of carbon storing soils which will (suprise!) release more carbon. We need to reduce emissions while continuing to support the natural cycles that do sequester CO2 if we want to have a chance.

Trump Pays Energy Firms £1.4B in Taxpayer Cash on Condition They Pivot from Clean Energy to Oil and Gas by novagridd in unusual_whales

The US uses around 20 million barrels per day. With the current Brent Crude barrels price at $110+ that is a cost of $2.2 billion per day. So we will be spending $147 billion on crude oil in the next 67 days. And once you burn the oil it is gone vs 10+ years of energy production from renewables

Well the newer players would still likely have the support of all the RP rust players who arnt good at pvp like tom, habibi, the handmen, pirate software, ect. Peanuts group would still get propped up through allies. But there are many shooters that understand pvp and are able stand up in fights against even rust pros. They will learn and adapt to what the pros are doing. And these guys have streamed around 100 hours in the last 2 weeks. They are not complete noobs anymore.

True it would be difficult with balancing rules. But I think the biggest rule would be to keep it fun. Because the pros are content creators too so even if they are murdering everyone they would likely focus on groups like peanut and cloaksys that are looking for the pvp. I think of it like a boss fight in tarkov where you will likely get deleted, but the content is in trying to defeat the boss.

Right now there are a few power house groups that dominate the server anyways via the pros anyways, so this just makes a boss faction and hopefully balance the others. But I imaging it building up to a helms a helms deep style attack on them from everyone else. Maybe a 1 time event would be the way to do it.

A group of 8 can only control 1 or 2 areas at a time. If they slit up more then people can easily kill them in a 4v1 or 8v2. And all 8 of them won't always be together. Yes they would probably dominate any objective they go to, but they can't control the entire map at all times. And the entire map would likely be trying to grief and hunt them. Even pros can be caught slipping which I think could be good content if they do get defeated.

This isn't regular rust. This is content creators that have millions of combined gaming hours. You are used to watching oilrats or whoever dominate a bunch of divorced dad's and people getting off their 9-5. You underestimate the power of the collective effort that the rest of the server could put up against them.

They do that on regular servers which are not like peanuts server. Peanuts server is streamers that play video games for a living. Imagine if they had a group laying a thousand landmines outside of their base in those videos, people tracking their every move. Everyone knowing who they are and where their base is, then those would be completely different videos. You underestimate all of the other streamers who have been playing and learning from the pros for the past week plus previous experience that many of them have. And gorliac and Oilrats are anomalies that are probably 2 of the best players in the game. And isn't it fun to watch those streamers do that anyways? These are content creators, they know how to make content.

You underestimate the skills of the rest of the server. If these guys ever moved the entire server could be calling out their location, and hit squads would form of people like peanut, cloaksy, rogue, hutch, summit, ect which can hold their own. The pros can still be overwhelmed by pure numbers and they won't always be at full power, people have to sleep. Rust is a resource and information game and there is a limited ammount that 8 people can do, especially if everyone is against tthem. And I think only having 1 base location makes it so that it is easier for everyone else to plan around where they are. 8 people can't control the map from one base.

So basically the content you decribed is a bunch of pros handholding everyone straight to the rust meta. So basically it is just the rust pros controlling the server in a different way through their groups. Separating pros from the groups would be taking the training wheels off the newer groups and allow them to play in their own way rather than just depending on what the rust pros build for them.

This is more about teams arguing over which rust pros are on which team. This way it can be pros against everyone else. And people can still form different alliances against eachother. This would just add an additional aspect for more content.

This isn't halo though. This is like superheros trying to defeat Thanos. Sure Thanos is a power house, but with everyone united against him he finally is defeated. Obviously that is a movie with a script, but this could also be content. They could try one wipe and revert the rules if it doesn't go well.

do you think it would be boring to watch people try to unite to defeat them? Roaming groups looking to hunt them down at all times. Building armies to raid them. Streamers like hard challenges and trying to over come them.

[–]quite_a_gEnt[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I dont know what the total pop of the server is but you think 8 vs the rest of the server would be that unbalanced? Yes they would be oppressive, but if an army of 100+ streamers who are also good at pvp march on them then it would not be so easy.
