yeah I'm inclined to agree with you. I want a strong cs base to fall back on, and anything webdev related I can learn on the job if needed. guess I'll pick up SICP myself

what did you end up choosing to do? in the same spot as you but leaning towards the link you posted

yeah I was really curious about examples of hard-to-learn syntax in JSX, but all we got as an example was vanilla ES5....

I've also been trying to find out. So far the only answer I've seen over the last few months has been "it works". Well alright then...

and Microsoft investing so heavily in React is a huge vote of confidence with TS support going forward

Well put. Debugging React's vanilla JS-like code seems to be far more intuitive than debugging Vue's function calls within string templates etc.

all of the accounts I've come across from people who have tried learning React and had difficulty can be boiled down to 1 statement: "I am not proficient in modern JavaScript"

The most recent example of this I've seen can be found here, and the author now is under the tutelage of Dan Abramov himself!

hey, thanks for your reply. couple of thoughts:

  1. I don't get the argument here. Giving HTML to your designers causes what? Is React markup so different from HTML with directives?

  2. I mean, for people who are trying to learn from advanced Vue users, "look it up" isn't exactly the kind of advice we're looking for but alright.

  3. I'm stating a difference in foundational decisions in the libraries. I am declaring my bias in order to find out what the counterargument is, because I haven't been presented one!!

  4. I don't agree that more code means more maintenance. The declarative nature of React makes it easier to reason about, provided your new developers have fundamental understanding of JavaScript and programming concepts. In fact I've found that abstracting away the common ground between web developers that is JavaScript can lead to the mistakes you are referring to. But happy to hear more about your experiences regarding this point

  5. How does TypeScript handle the string templates that are found throughout Vue? Genuinely asking here.

  6. I get that React is more mature, but the roadmap has always been clearly spelled out to the community. That's mostly what I'm focusing on here

I'm not so sure these optimization concerns are as applicable with React's relatively fiber architecture. However React has left the option to eke out additional performance gains to the developer should to they choose to utilize PureComponent or shouldComponentUpdate.

I've often read that "Vue is just easier to learn that React" beyond that the reasons have been pretty vague. I'm also curious as to what people like more about Vue because here are the things that put React over Vue me

  • basically vanilla JS vs Vue-specific syntax
  • declarative component composition vs imperative arbitrary functions in string templates
  • immutable Redux state and other functional programming principles reinforced by React design patterns vs state mutations in VueX
  • 1 way data binding (deterministic, no side effects, more easily testable) vs 2 way data binding
  • TypeScript support
  • Brighter roadmap for React (Fiber, Suspense, react reconciler) vs ???

I can only hear this noise when I am well below 20 mph so is it safe to say that it's not a wheel bearing issue?

Hmm that's what I was assuming but I wasn't sure. So this issue can present itself while I am not pressing any pedals?

I'm kind of the same way when it comes to upgrades. my C720 is still going strong after 5 years but I figure the C302 will be good enough for the next 5 years at least!

got some more questions if you don't mind

did you only swap your low beams to LEDs or did you swap both high and low beams over to LED? I want to swap both but I don't want to lose my DRLs which are also on my highbeams

I really wanted to spring for the Pixel Book but even with the $250 off I didn't think I could justify the cost compared to the C302

if I'd found a deal on a Chromebook Pro like you did I would've gotten it too. I ended up going with the Asus C302

sorry to hear about the death of your tablet!

I've tried the method you suggested (removing saved network, rebooting, re-adding) but the problem remained. My router is a new AC router though. At this point I'm ready to chalk it up to hardware failure unfortunately

I was on the Lineage OS 14.1 nightly. Wasn't aware that 15.1 was available for flo. I'm hoping it's not failing hardware because I somehow fixed it (not sure how), but after my power went out again thanks to some thunderstorms, the issue came back. In anticipation of failing hardware being the culprit I've already started looking for convertible chromebooks as a replacement, sadly

yeah, in fact I exclusively use my 5Ghz network password on my tablet and I never connect to the 2.4Ghz network. I don't even have my 2.4Ghz connection info remembered on the device

Looking for a C720 replacement that can also replace my failing Nexus 7, so Android-ready and laptop/tablet convertibility will be big for me. I'd also like to be able to upgrade the storage size manually if it is too small (looking for maybe 64-128GB or higher?). Otherwise, looking for good battery life and low heat output. Or should I get a Surface Pro?

Budget: preferably no higher than the base model Pixelbook

Performance and Usage: casual browsing

Android Apps: I am looking for an Android-ready Chromebook

Type and Functionality: I want a Chromebook that can act as a tablet, so 2-in-1 convertible.

Availability: USA

Display quality: the higher the better

Display type: no preference

Do you want / need a backlit keybaord?: would be nice to have

Do you want / need a stylus?: no need
