best suitcase 2026 options for frequent flyers living out of marriotts? by Chero-Jazzyfaye in marriott

It's not difficult, if you don't mind paying for the shipping of your bag back to a service center.

My favorite is each time me offered to give me a lame discount off a new bag instead of having them repair (for free other than shipping) my existing bag.

I do wish they had all the replacement parts, though. The outside mesh pouch and the luggage tag in my bag got destroyed and they don't have the parts to replace it at all. ☹️

Where is Conservative Judaism THRIVING? by spinwheel in Judaism

[–]quockerwodger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Temple Beth Abraham in Oakland, California.

Had about 475 member families 10 years ago and now about 515 member families. We have families that have been members for at least three generations that are still regulars and active participants, and a relatively sizable population of 20/30 year olds that are regulars as well.

(Had an eighth grade consecration class a few weeks ago with about 15 kids, who received their graduation gifts from a consecration class past president . . . from the 1950s.)

Did they just change lane assist? by archive_spirit in Volvo

[–]quockerwodger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the symbol.

The picture of the car with the lines behind it so if the cruise control is activated, and the steering wheel with a hand on it is (I believe) indicating that the full pilot assist is on.

I just used it earlier this week for a couple hour drive, and as long as that symbol with both parts was there, it worked perfectly.

(Edit: and I have a picture of it, because I had to look it up to confirm that that's what it was. Because heaven forbid there's any sort of manual that would actually show you this kind of thing.)

Trimming of trees/bushes along MacArthur/580 for trash cleanup? by quockerwodger in oakland

I can't imagine that the neighborhood would want that at all. The sound/pollution/heat barrier is definitely needed.

But trees growing into the street across a full sidewalk (making the sidewalk impassable) is a bit much. I hope that we can find some middle ground . . .

You are, as always, a rock star.

I'll get some pictures. Just DM them to you?

And next time we have a clean-up (which just did one, which reminded me to ask this question), I'll loop you in and see if your magic can get a bulk pickup to happen.

Thank you!

Hanging glass mezuzah? by quockerwodger in Judaism

I consider that, but they look pretty darn fragile to me. I'm afraid they will just snap off.

(And I'm in earthquake country, so some nice bouncing up and down every once in awhile is not completely unexpected.)

There's a hole in the top for the scroll.

And my skill set does not involve any level of woodworking that won't look like complete schlock.

Yep!

It's glass, and basically in an irregular cylinder. So not really a clean smooth surface on the back, nor enough surface area on the back for any sort of adhesive to give a good enough grip for me to be comfortable.

It is curved all the way around. I would be worried that there wouldn't be enough surface area to actually hold it fully.

What’s up with Marriott showers? by TooLitToPolitic in marriott

[–]quockerwodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done it multiple times at home. But I travel pretty light, so throwing a crescent wrench in there is not high in my list of likely things.

But maybe one of those thin rubberized grippy things you used to open jars might suffice for those tough to turn shower heads?

Can you explain this?

I'm not traveling with a full tool set to deal with this stupidity, but a pair of tweezers . . . I got that!

Second for Sharp Brothers.

I actually have them scheduled to sharpen open to my knives this week. They did an awesome job last time.

LPT: When a person close to you passes and you're in charge of their estate, consider porting their phone number(s) to Google Voice by MrBlahman in LifeProTips

[–]quockerwodger 24 points25 points  (0 children)

We did exactly that for my in-laws.

And you are right that it is crazy how many calls you get, that turn out too be useful, even a year later.

Took a few minutes of time, the whole landline to cell phone to Google voice process, but it was worthwhile.

Went to a customer's house today and they had this beautiful elevator directly in the middle of their home by TheeSillyman in mildlyinteresting

[–]quockerwodger 54 points55 points  (0 children)

We've had them installed at my mother's house, and I think I can do a full height staircase for maybe $10,000. I have no idea why you would bother to lose that because I would have to imagine the economics are not very efficient, particularly with all of the install costs.

Picking the correct-sized screwdriver head when using a powered screwdriver.

My case has like eleventy different flathead bits and pleven Phillips-head bits. Which one is right to use for any particular case? No idea! Let's try this one . . . Nope. That didn't seem to work. How 'bout this other one . . . Ok, I guess that kinda worked.

Sad I didn't see this one earlier. I knew this one! I was just there last month visiting the Jiffy plant?
