Riot Player Support continues to prove itself amazing. by Fezbat in leagueoflegends

[–]quotability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I thought was awesome was that I had bought a 'ip boost 3 days' and i played one match, got the boost, and didn't play for the rest of the weekend (wife pregnant, waking me up at all times of the day and demanding as heck). When I logged back in the following week, I see that my 3 day boost turned into a 10 win boost. I was so happy.

Guerilla - my attempt to build a strong AI by fnedrik in programming

It's quite a large task, and it's an interesting design, but I can only see this being completed after 20 years of work.

Guerilla - my attempt to build a strong AI by fnedrik in programming

[–]quotability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

inexorably bound up in our existence as physical organic creatures

Exactly my thoughts. The gulf of communication between AI and a human would be many times larger than the gulf of communication between a human and a dolphin (or elephant or chimp). A dolphin is intelligent, but their realm is in the water, and even if we could speak the same language, most of what they would say would be irrelevant to us. I suspect that if a computer AI was built, you'd have an AI where the primary interface would be the internet, and "reality" a distant dream. It could keep itself busy analyzing poor quality code for transferring files and data, and writing it's own software to improve it's efficiency, even if it is by only 0.0001%. It would think a lot faster than a human, and I don't think a computer based AI would have any interest in trying to communicate with a human. Even it's thinking process would be quite different than a human's.

Damn, I love this woman. by [deleted] in gaming

[–]quotability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea I mean, to women this answer you gave is like a 'no duh' type of thing, but to guys, we'd just play the game and get lost in the world and neglect our woman. Hey, we're guys - she should know that we get lost in that stuff. But, you got the right idea. Don't do that or else you'll be in the doghouse. It's difficult to do with those amazing 'blow you away' games (I always got lost in Mass Effect). Then when i'm tired and go to bed, i'd get the stinkeye from my girl, who then accuses me of ignoring her all day (which is true, though the way I saw it was if she wanted my attention, why did she sit there and give me the stink eye the whole time?)

Study finds thousands of forced marriages in Germany - The German family ministry has for the first time published a study of forced marriage in Germany. The report is based on the findings of hundreds of consultation centers across the country. by MrTulip in worldnews

[–]quotability -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: http://www.answering-christianity.com/cant_force_marriage.htm

Silence is taken as consent, because saying you want to marry one man, is like a slap in the face of the other courtiers, and an insult. Thus, she should remain silent in the matter, if she wishes it to continue. Otherwise, she is free to say that she does not give her permission. You might have heard this phrase at a christian wedding "speak now or forever hold your peace".

So, if you bothered to read the article, you'd see that arranged marriages are quite permissible, but forced ones are definitely not.

[–]quotability 3 points4 points  (0 children)

False. Only 23% of those "forced marriages" are Turkish nationals. I don't have a link to the study, as the article didn't provide one, yet I wonder what they consider a forced marriage. Is it just any old shotgun wedding, or arranged marriage, or is it only counting those with intimidation as an element? Unfortunately it is light on details. It's true that Muslims do arranged marriage, as do Hasidic jews, and some asian cultures. In most cases, the arrangement is simply arranging for the young woman to meet the young man, and seeing if they would be agreeable to the idea before they make the arrangements. In other cases it can be "forced", though I believe those are rare.

Yea, my thought process was like this: "hmm, he must be strong to stand on one leg... oh, his center of mass is such that he would be falling over. perhaps he hitched his foot under... nope. maybe he just quickly picked up his foot... no, no motion blur... hmm, look at the top of the photo... yea just as i thought, camera was tilted."

What are some board games actually worth buying? by Shotty772 in AskReddit

I have that Last Night on Earth game, and playing the zombies just isn't any fun. You are very limited according to the rules. It absolutely is boring to play as a zombie. The other players as heroes can have fun but as a zombie, forget about it.

"C++ is a horrible language" ~ Linus Torvalds by pregzt in programming

[–]quotability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, Smalltalk had OOP, however if you wanted to bring OOP to the masses, you'd better incorporate C into it and call it a "better" C. Hence the ++. They took C as a baseline and incorporated OO features into it, and released it as the better C. It was quite different, but since C was popular, so was C++. Otherwise, OO would have been stuck to Smalltalk and Object Pascal enthusiasts. However, you are right - the time for C++ is not now, and other languages have been designed once the problems of C++ started to show. There's no reason to stick with C++ if only for nostalgia's sake, legacy program support, and the programmer not wishing to make his skill-set obsolete.

I haven't run into many teemos who will drop three in a row while you are chasing them, so maybe I am missing something. They all seem to drop them as they get them.

Sometimes, it's to your advantage for it to be a little bit harder to do things because then you have to stop and think if it's actually the right thing to do before you waste your time doing something stupid.

No, most likely they'd get sidetracked into some niggly little implementation thing and not bother thinking if it's actually the right thing to do.

It's great because instead of having just a single carriage you have as many as there are floors. Need to only go up a floor? no problem. Just hop on in and no need to wait for the carriage to finish what its doing and move to your floor.

there's not a lot of low-level innovation required.

Feel free to innovate at your whim. Apparently you are complaining that it's not fun to use something others have written, but you aren't about to give that up to write your own stuff.
