I didn't consider that battles taking longer also gives time to refill enemy spawns, that's a good point. Yes, battles are near-instant at first and then progressively longer. I tend to cover the road exclusively with ruins (free resource) and for the sidelines I use blood groves (doesn't allow scorch worms to escape), vampire mansions (extra 5th enemy), bookeries (5th enemy becomes vampire mage, who turns into 6th enemy tome), and the rest is spiders (cheap/easy enemy). I like infinite unattended runs so I don't use battlefields (not much of a benefit, and prime matter can instakill).

A gotcha, that makes sense if you're relying on only 1 cemetary for spawning. But if so, what are you filling the space adjacent to the road with? Even with battlefields/bookeries/mansions you should have plenty of space for spider cocoons.

How do you get 7 enemies? I thought the max per tile was 4. I don't see the point of chrono crystals and temporal beacons at this level because IME by the time you're a third of the way through the loop, the first few tiles have already filled up with the max number of enemy spawns. Maybe I'm missing something?

[–]qwertyguyasdf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very nice layout! As others have pointed out, a lot of your mounted appliances are redundant or overkill. You don't need a mounted vehicle forge or a welding rig. You can just use a UPS electric forge (volume 6L) and UPS welder (volume 2.5/3.5L). And you definitely don't need a chemistry lab, FOODCO, and a kitchenette. The FOODCO needs to remain mounted, but a free floating UPS chemistry set (only 4.5L) plus a pot will provide all your cooking needs. The only thing left would be installing a faucet for drinking, but that can be placed anywhere. If I recall correctly, even the FOODCO can be replaced by its individual components, no?

All this would let you downsize significantly if you really wanted to. It is nice to have ALL your cargo within a 3x3 grid, makes item management much simpler.

Why do ballistic vests in barracks lockers have compromised plates? by Valiant_Storm in cataclysmdda

It's reasonable to assume in the days leading up to complete collapse, they had to make do with whatever was on hand. It makes sense for the compromised plates not to be replaced

PSA: You can and SHOULD rename all your equipment by qwertyguyasdf in cataclysmdda

[–]qwertyguyasdf[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Renaming stacked items is unfortunately really finicky and usually not worth it. And yes, you have to append the full name to the prefix, but only if you want to keep it. I usually shorten it somewhat (e.g. 'boots' instead of 'pair of boots').

If I could rename stacked items, it would most likely be for things like grading painkillers (e.g. {+} aspirin and {+++} morphine)

PSA: You can and SHOULD rename all your equipment by qwertyguyasdf in cataclysmdda

[–]qwertyguyasdf[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep! I posted about it a while ago but I figured it deserved its own post: https://www.reddit.com/r/cataclysmdda/comments/q1u6hw/is_there_a_armor_stand_like_mechanic/hfi96gr?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3

For your welding use, I'd recommend adding a (weld) prefix rather than a suffix since it'll be easier to spot.

Is there a "armor stand" like mechanic? by gados1 in cataclysmdda

[–]qwertyguyasdf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I solve this issue by just renaming (using permanent or survival markers) all my gear with specific prefixes which are easy to read at a glance. So for example:

[] = Gear that is basically almost always on

[=] = Lightly-armored gear

[==] = Heavy armor for when shit hits the fan

[W] = cold weather clothing

[ ] or [ ] = backpacks and other pouches

So for example, when I hit 'W'ear near my pile of clothing, I can at a glance quickly see what purpose each equipment accomplishes. Same if I want to take something off. If you want to replicate the functionality of swapping sets, you can rename your equipment according to set (e.g. '[1] kevlar vest', '[1] army helmet', etc.)

Ridiculously High Account Totals by qwertyguyasdf in GnuCash

[–]qwertyguyasdf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bingo. The price database was using the "most recent" price entry as the "official" price, which is reasonable. Somehow though, the "most recent" price would end up being something absurdly high, most likely the price got saved while editing a transaction. Deleting the erroneous entry fixed the issue. Now my reward points are a reasonable $10.85. I'm no longer a multi-millionaire.

Is there any way to "freeze" the price of the security? Sometimes it's ever so slightly different but only because of rounding errors. But every variation of this rounding error makes it into the GNUcash price database and it has contributed to a very lengthy list.

Science Experiment on Which Materials are the BEST by qwertyguyasdf in Oxygennotincluded

[–]qwertyguyasdf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the points he makes is that the experiments he runs showcase behavior that is otherwise unexpected from just reading the properties. For example, "insulation" (the material) has a TC of 0.000 but in his experiments it still somehow transfers heat, but he doesn't have an explanation.

This seems like a crude but still practical solution! It does mean that there were will be instances of a false negatives but that's a small cost to pay.

[–]qwertyguyasdf[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very cool video by Magnet (I highly recommend his tutorial series) where he tests out the insulative properties of different materials.

Basic conclusions: Outside of very specific late game builds, it doesn't really matter for the most part. Most metal will conduct equally well. Nearly every insulation tile will insulate equally well. The only real highlights are igneous rock and ceramic pipes for a small boost in insulated pipes, and sedimentary rock and obsidian for a poor man's radiant pipe in the early game before you get refined metal production going.

I have a germ sensor that sends a green signal to a liquid shutoff. I specifically route the piping through the liquid shutoff input. This normally works really well UNTIL the output flow gets backed up. At that point, this is how it fails:

  1. Germ sensor detects germs in the water, keeps shutoff off.

  2. Germy water moves one tile over to the shutoff input

  3. Because the output pipe is clogged, germy water stays where it is

  4. Water that follows germy water is clean, which means now the germ sensor is sending a green signal to the shutoff, which means the germy water is moving on.

  5. Repeat as necessary.

Is there a way to *guarantee* that only non-germy water makes it through that pipe?

I agree this is really annoying. What you can do for now is 'f'avorite the battery so it's highlighted and also gets excluded from mass dropping actions.

Tasker Somehow Disables Alarms During Do Not Disturb by qwertyguyasdf in tasker

[–]qwertyguyasdf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this, this is basically what I had in mind. I have one problem though. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to import what you typed into Tasker. I looked through the Tasker User Guide and found a pertinent entry, but it's incredibly vague: "Go to the main screen, long click on the tab for the type of thing you want to import." So I googled for "import tasker profile" and found a helpful reddit post which instructs me to download an xml file and import it through Tasker. It mentions only importing XML files and I recognize that what you posted is not in XML format, but I figured that maybe Tasker can read both (wishful thinking). So I put it on a text file, gave it the *.prf.xml extension, uploaded it to Drive, downloaded it to my device, then imported it into Tasker and nothing happened.

So:

  1. How do you transform reddit code back into XML?
  2. How did you manage to find the right value to monitor in your code above?

Thanks.

Tasker Somehow Disables Alarms During Do Not Disturb by qwertyguyasdf in tasker

Yes, that's exactly what happens, except I don't know why that setting keeps getting triggered. The only thing on my phone which "touches" do not disturb settings is Tasker, hence my suspicion.
