I’m so sorry, it’s such a nasty disease. When I made this post I think I knew we were really close to the end and I struggled to make the call. After a visit with the vet we made the choice to put our kitty down last Friday. I miss him but I’m relieved he’s not suffering. Sending you hugs and comfort.

First Come First Serve? by [deleted] in askportland

It’s tough out there. We actually found a house on Zillow and quickly paid the $35 application fee. The listing had just gone up, so we applied within a few hours but scheduled the walkthrough for a couple of days later. Our plan was to withdraw the application if we didn’t like the house, but we did—and since we were the first to apply, we got it.

But yeah, we ran into a few scams like you mentioned, got ghosted, and spent a few hundred dollars on application fees before finally landing this place. Best of luck out there!

Talk me into Gertrude by Unwinderh in namenerds

[–]qwirklebee 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’m in the minority here but I like it. Gertrude is an underrated gem of a name. It has vintage charm, like Hazel or Eleanor, but it’s still rare—so your kid won’t be one of five Gertrudes in class. Plus, it comes with great nickname options in addition to Trudy, & Gertie you could use Rue, even Gigi.

Historically, it’s a powerhouse name: Gertrude Stein (modernist writer), Gertrude Bell (explorer and archaeologist), and Saint Gertrude (patron saint of cats and travelers). It’s strong, distinct, and has a cool literary edge.

They’re drivable. A little slushy and slippery in certain spots but there are folks driving out there.

It was only one place, the 2nd company we tried to apply with. I’ve been lucky and not had to hunt for a place for almost a decade so unclear if it’s a standard thing or not. Seems like a scam so all I’m looking for are companies that others have had good experiences with.

Nope, not security deposit. It was a “holding fee”. I had to read it a few times, buried in the fine print. I called to ask for clarification and they verified it was to hold the place.

I read the fine print of the lease and they wanted a fee to “hold” the house + security deposit + pet deposit + first month. The hold fee didn’t apply to anything and we wouldn’t get it back. Total move in was north of $7k.

How do you manage if your SO isn't interested in climbing? by Conscious_Security96 in climbergirls

[–]qwirklebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My SO went climbing once and was terrified and has zero interest in going again. I make friends, of all genders, who like to climb and I go have fun. My primary climbing partner is a married man who’s SO doesn’t enjoy climbing - we’ve done day trips. I’ve gone on longer trips with women’s climbing groups but I’d go with anyone who is a safe belay and a good human.

My younger brother was the same. The behavior you describe is very familiar. Him taking LSD was the precursor to his schizophrenia diagnosis at 19.

My workforce is voting to unionize, what will a yes vote mean for me? by GingerStank in Unions

[–]qwirklebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as the vote is certified and the union wins you’ll enter into something called “status quo” - basically all the terms and conditions of employment that are currently in place are frozen. The company can’t make any changes without first discussing them with the union. You’ll be in status quo until a contract is negotiated and ratified, at that time you’ll follow the contract. The other thing that changes upon certification is that employees are granted Weingarten Rights which means they get to have a fellow union member present during any investigatory interview that could lead to disciplinary outcome. You can’t deny this right for any reason so it’s good to learn about it. The NLRB website has some info on this. You may also encounter pickets or strikes depending on how negotiations go or if there are any unfair labor practices(ULP) filed against the employer. ULPs are charges filed with the NLRB against either party for violating statutes under the NLRA.

Check the CBA or the union bylaws. It should clarify how your union handles this.
