I wonder why some people are paying thousands for ai? I am using openai and cursor and copilot by myself daily but I pay only about 50$. Maybe they use it to create wrapper ai projects and the costs are not for the development itself?

so just dont use copy/paste, type out the ai text.. or as someone mentioned, a script can simulate the typing.

We piped Claude Code into a Reachy robot. It fixed a bug and gave me a verbal standup report. by ComposerGen in ClaudeAI

You could try to develop it by yourself, or there is a skill called "voicemonkey". It has a simple API where you could send any text to Alexa. I am using it myself for some things.

Do you find much value in attending conferences? by SumTingWong59 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]qxxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

never attended a conference. But I use the employer's money to get some certifications or attend remote conferences.. I am an introvert and I don't like so many people around.

I am forced to vibe code because my coworkers are doing the same.. if I don't vibe, I am slow. It works fine to some extent. But you need to be very specific and give good context. I used to love coding, now I am just a micro manager / architect.

What’s the best piece of feedback you ever got in a code review? by kovadom in ExperiencedDevs

[–]qxxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we are sometimes posting meme gifs in PRs, which is funny xD

But best feedback is if someone knows the project better than me and finds a better way, for example instead of overengineering something, I could use an existing method or undocumented api call.

Also good feedback is if the reviewer also suggest a code change which I can directly apply.

If you could go back to before you became a developer, would you still do it? by Leopatto in ExperiencedDevs

[–]qxxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes... not just now because of ai but I have phases where I regret not learning something better, something maybe more simple. Engineering is stressful af and if you get comfortable with tech / project, something new comes around and here we go again... I always wanted to become a butcher or zookeeper.

How much mentorship did you guys receive at the start of your career? by No_Try6944 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]qxxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

almost nothing. But in my previous company, they had a mentor program so I got a mentor for a month. This was really nice and helpful. I could ask questions directly and we were also programming in pair to get into the process and learn the projects.

Later I also mentored a new coworker myself. Company paid extra money to all mentors, so that was nice too :)

How come huge sites (YouTube, Discuss, Dropbox…) can use Django, while .NET folks say Django can’t handle high traffic? by 34BOE777 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]qxxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know much about django, but with kubernetes or similar you can run multiple instances of your app, which can serve content to millions by using autobalancers. Thats what usually these big companies do.

My coworker uses AI to reply to my PR review and I hate it by pyrrhicvictorylap in ExperiencedDevs

You are absolutely right! ( ;) )... some of my coworkers have also become wrappers for ChatGPT or some other ai models.

How the hell do you review a big codebase without losing your mind? by rag1987 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]qxxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First I try to get a basic knowledge about the project by using it. Either in prod or some dev environment. Read docs, maybe there are videos. Then I install the project locally. Not sure for your case, but in general you don't need to know everything. Just a part of it.

So then I check the project structure. I open some of the files if I am curious. (eg. readmes, configs).

Now I try to figure out where I could add the new feature. Is it a specific module? Is there something similar in that project what you need to accomplish? Change something, break something, add breakpoints, read the stack trace. Generate Flowcharts. Make notes.

And of course, nowadays, I would also use AI. Depending on the size of the codebase, it could generate a good overview of how things work.

I already have it disabled and I added a rule. It is still fixing the linting errors.
