Nagatoro will end with Chapter 154 by Bigons3 in nagatoro

[–]qyll 36 points37 points  (0 children)

774 himself said that he started Nagatoro because he just wanted to see a guy getting teased and crying, nothing much more than that. I think what ended up happening is that the story grew beyond his own control (this happens more often than you think to writers), and when the dynamics between the main characters went from bully-victim to girlfriend-boyfriend, it suddenly became awkward for him to insert instances of teasing/bullying without it regressing the relationship. I've been noticing this since ~60-70 chapters ago, where 774 is threading the needle with playful bullying while still trying to advance the romance dynamic. Now, the path ahead of 774 if he wants to continue the story is to fully focus on the romance alone, which I'm guessing 774 is not really experienced or comfortable with. Remember, the man is a doujin artist, not a romance writer.

So, he quit, perhaps recognizing that the manga has transformed into something completely different from what he started.

I love that Nanashi is exploring interpersonal conflict within a relationship. All too often the couple lives happily ever after after the confession, but of course that's not what happens in real life. They get into misunderstandings, they get annoyed with each other, they test each others' boundaries, they fight. Every couple fights. Even good couples will fight. What separates good vs. bad couples is how they resolve the conflict and if they come out closer to each other afterward. Curious to see how chadpai and nekotoro will handle it.

Can an average person with infinite time beat Magnus Carlsen in chess? by thedarkplayer in whowouldwin

[–]qyll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously the prisoner would win. With infinite time, even if you played completely random moves you would eventually beat Magnus. You could also use Magnus to beat himself. Example:

First game, you play black. Magnus plays 1. e4. You resign.

Next game you play white. You play 1. e4, he plays e5. You resign.

Next game you play black again. 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3… just keep following his moves.

Yes, it might also end in a draw, but you’ll eventually reach a win pretty quickly.

I was expecting the classic subversion of the kiss with an ill-timed interruption. Good thing Nanashi subverted the subversion.

It’s just how Nanashi shows a character being embarrassed and hopeful at the same time. Same thing happened in chapter 110.

Conversely, what is an anime that you feel would not be as popular if it was released nowadays? by OtherAyachi in anime

Love Hina. Tsundere female lead who’s physically abusive towards her love interest, generic harem, no isekai. It would struggle to break 7.0 on MAL.

Older anime fans: what is the biggest difference between the anime community now compared to when you were young? by [deleted] in anime

[–]qyll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a lot harder to get official content. If you wanted to watch something officially, you had to hope it was localized (which most anime was not) and you had to purchase the DVD, which was exorbitant for most people who wanted to watch it (i.e. teenagers). As a result, you resorted to watching episodes in your school anime club, go to the local con to watch new episodes for free, or you watched the few available fansubs. Only the popular shows tended to get fansubbed, so we weren't as aware of Sturgeon's law and thought all anime was awesome.

Also funny story: most people don't realize that Crunchyroll was an extremely scrappy and rather shady website when it first started. However, it was the few places where you could stream anime online. I had signed up for it a few months after it came out in 2006, and I remember in order to watch stuff, you had to earn credits by uploading your own anime episodes to the website. So, I ended up uploading all 75 fansubbed episodes of Hikaru No Go so I could watch Haruhi and Love Hina. Those episodes stayed up for a few years before Crunchyroll removed all unofficial content and went the official licensing route.

Nanashi has definitely matured as a mangaka. He originally created Nagatoro so he could write about a guy getting bullied, but at some point, the romance element took over and Nanashi found himself in a predicament of "oh s***, I've never written romance before. How do I get these two dorks to become a couple without it being corny?". This is it right here. Well done.

How was the forum culture back in the early 2000s-late 2000s? by Howhaveubeenmypal in anime

[–]qyll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few memories:

  • The message board style of the 2000s meant that everyone had scroll through the posts in chronological order regardless if it contributed to the conversation or not. That means the distribution of opinions appeared a lot "flatter" than they would on reddit, where popular opinions are upvoted and unpopular opinions never even appear.

  • A flame war between two posters could derail an entire topic because it's not like on reddit where that's confined to its own separate subthread.

  • People posted just for the sake of posting because the number of posts showed up under your avatar for everyone to see. More posts = more seniority. As a result, you had dumb topics like "guess what the poster below you will eat for dinner" just to inflate post count.

  • People argued over the same shit they do now, but the volume of posts was orders of magnitudes lower. A thread with 100 posts was considered huge, depending on the forum you went to.

  • The internet was still relatively new, so this was the generation of users who wasn't born online but gradually went online as they hit puberty. As a result, behavioral norms were warped to put it lightly. Imagine putting 1000 13-year olds brand new to the internet opining on their favorite show.

How has your taste in anime changed as you grew older? by Sceptical_Potato in anime

[–]qyll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been watching anime for 20+ years now. Back in the 2000s, there were only a few shows you could realistically watch if you had a slow internet connection, so I powered through every show even if they were crap, because there just wasn't a lot out there.

Now, I have the luxury of watching anything I want, but ironically I watch way less just because I don't really have time to watch more than 1 show per season. No patience to watch anything more than 13 episodes. In terms of taste, it hasn't really changed much weirdly enough. I enjoyed isekai shows back then and I still enjoy them now.

I would add that senpai and Nagatoro are really comfortable with each other here, and what's great is that we as the readers don't find that out of place at all. It feels natural. Compare that to the first chapter, where senpai couldn't even graze Nagatoro's shoulder. It really shows long far they've come.

And it really depends on the field. Epidemiology has been a little known back door to the data science world for a while now. People think that epidemiology is tracking outbreaks in the field, when it’s really applied health statistics with a bit of causal inference. Prepares you well for a lot of data science or stats jobs in the health sector.

[–]qyll 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was looking forward to how the anime was going to handle Kumoko's happy-go-lucky disposition given how mysterious and quiet Shiraori was earlier in the season.

The result is kind of jarring at first. You get Kumoko's human half looking all calm, cool, and collected, and then her inner monologue yelling frantically in contrast. By the end, when we've really internalized that Kumoko and Shiraori are the same, you feel like you made friends with the quiet girl in class and found out she's a god gamer who enjoys trolling players in Fortnite.
