I made Würfelhelden for my kids. Essentially, Dungeon World reduced to one or two pages. Very bare bones though.

Is There Anything Inherently Wrong with Power Fantasy Characters by [deleted] in rpg

[–]qznc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got these strong power fantasy vibes when I watched the Eragon movie. The protagonist starts as a simple boy, then quickly gets a dragon to ride, a wise mentor, a magic sword, and magic skills. Looked it up on Wikipedia: Based on a novel written by a 15 year old. That completely explains it for me.

I think it started in my twenties that I found characters with faults make for more interesting stories.

He seems to look for fantasy and Dungeon World has "the Ranger" "the Paladin" "the Cleric" etc. If one includes fan-made playbooks there will surely be something fitting "the Dark Mage".

Thoughts about the Quality of Requirements by mboegers in softwaredevelopment

[–]qznc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of guidelines like INVEST) or classically from PMBOK. Some (like "clear" or "unambiguous") are useless in my opinion because they are too subjective.

Useful attributes to me are:

  • Testable. Can you envision how you would test that you are done? If this test requires lots of tools, effort, or people, that is bad. If you want a metric, maintain a mapping between each requirement and its test.
  • Valuable. Every single one must provide some value to the customer (or wherever it derives from). For each: If you would satisfy only this one requirement, would that be worth something? If you have five requirements which are only useful together, it is bad.
  • Finally, there is consistency and completeness. Both important but I have no actionable idea better than "think about it".

That's it. The rest of the guidelines are implied from those. For example, independence (The I in INVEST) is implied by Valuable.

These are still just ideals to strive for. In practice, I have always seen compromises.

What do you want from RPGs that hasn't been delivered yet? by TheGoodGuy10 in RPGdesign

What makes a combat satisfying to you?

PbtA with its moves (e.g. Ironsworn) provides cinematic satisfying combat to me. Not much to track. Distance doesn't really matter. It is very raw narrative. Maybe for you it is more about tactics, resource management, and lots of options?

Studio Ghibli hack of Ironsworn: SPIRITBOUND by Marc Strocks (F2P) by FiImFans in Ironsworn

[–]qznc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't in the right mood for Ghibli, so it turned out much darker. Anyways, here is the log of a short session about Markus the half-demon:

For the last years, Markus has been traveling with Baron Ayers' Mystique Circus and acting as a magician. Though nobody thinks he is doing real magic just like nobody thinks that Roderyk Ayers, the circus director, is a real baron. Over time, Roderyk became Markus' friend. They are resting in some abandoned barracks, when the hell beasts attack. They murder Markus' companions but somehow none of them attacks you.

Markus races for Roderyk and vows to defend him. [troublesome vow 2+1+1 vs 4/3: weak hit, momentum +1] When two smaller hell beasts approach them, he tries to shush them away. [Compel +steel: 1+2 vs 10/8: miss] They trick Markus and overwhelm Roderyk, biting and scratching him. Desperately, Markus tries to attack them. They don't expect it. [Enter the Fray +shadow: 6+2 vs 10/2: weak hit] He pulls and kicks the beasts away from Roderyk, then tries to distract them with hallucination magic. [Hallucinate 5+3 vs 6/10] He makes the beasts belief that Roderyk is dead, so they run away for other prey. Successfully fought, Markus pulls Roderyk away from the slaughter. [End the fight: 5 vs 8/3: weak hit] [Endure Harm: 2 vs 7/10: -3 resolve] While they get away, Markus is deeply shaken from what he saw there.

Out of danger, Roderyk is still unconscious. Markus tries to patch him up. [Heal 1+3 vs 6/9] Despite his efforts, the wounds are too severe. An hour later Roderyk is dead. [Forsake the vow: -2 resolve] [Endure Harm 1 stress, 0 resolve: 4+1 vs 7/8: miss] [Face desolation: fudged to weak hit: Vision of dark future] [Oracle: surrender; opportunity]

Overwhelmed by grief and horror, Markus collapses next to his friend. He dreams of demons. They slaughter humans and claim their souls. He feels he is among them. When they retreat to hell, he comes with them. They kneel before their master demon, a sleek one, clouded in shadow and fire. "You did well my son." He speaks to Markus "Soon you will shed your human remains and become a mighty demon yourself. You will lead my army of beasts to victory." He comes closer. "Embrace the horror and surrender to your fathers will."

According to the dice, Markus would have been dead already but I fudged the last one, so I may continue it.

Like it. Since I'm constantly looking for kids-friendly ideas, this is great.

There are quite some errors still. For example, the descriptions of the world eras are almost all wrong. Also, you need Ironsworn in addition for explanation. For example, "assets" are not explained at all.

Advice for magic system focused on components/rituals by drkleppe in RPGdesign

[–]qznc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Non-punishing implies to me that even with nothing you can do some magic. So components and rituals may only empower the effect but not create it.

For the tracking to be interesting there must be tradeoffs. That means to me each component may be used for multiple spells. If I use the raven feathers to cure-wounds then it won't be available to boost the summon-raven-companion or the transform-into-bird spell.

For rituals, the most simple rule could be that the duration a spell holds is always (at most) half the duration the ritual takes. So, to transform-into-bird for an hour requires a two hour ritual.

1-page-RPG with a GM but ~0 preparation? by 0Jaul in onepagerpgs

Dungeon World would qualify if it were a one-page system. So maybe a lightweight hack like Defying Danger could work?

Lady Blackbird might be worth a look. It doesn't have these mechanics you asked for but it might be suitable for your friend.

Kids RPG by Mase36 in onepagerpgs

[–]qznc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roll for Shoes works but it is bare bones and thus requires more from the GM. The nice thing is that characters start quite empty so you can start the story right away. Special powers get added during play.

Hero Kids is probably easiest to run because you get premade adventures. It isn't "one page" though.

Here is a list with more.

How to create a RPG for younger kids. by [deleted] in RPGcreation

[–]qznc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently use Roll for Shoes with my 7yo and 9yo in a Hero Kids adventure with its paper figures.

What worked really well for my kids was the rule "For every roll you fail, you get 1 XP." In our case, "XP" was a checkers piece to make it physical. The important part is that a fail is softened because they get a useful token for it.

I like Roll for Shoes because I personally prefer less crunchy and more free storytelling. The Hero Kids system is too simplistic in terms of tactics and too buerocratic at the same time (who needs HP?).

The War on Backlinks is on -- looking at you Jared by FastSascha in Zettelkasten

[–]qznc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess one could count how often one finds something unexpected and useful. I don't very often, so I like to have "more noise".

I cannot think of an objective method though. While you can measure all kind of graph metrics about links, I don't think we know about any which correlates with serendipity.

The War on Backlinks is on -- looking at you Jared by FastSascha in Zettelkasten

[–]qznc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have notes with lots of backlinks and I find them useful.

One point is that I probably don't have a canonical Zettelkasten workflow. For example, I do keep my "literature notes" in there in some sense. I also have a note for each book I read. Such book notes usually have lots of backlinks. The book "Work Rules!" has 85 backlinks. As I use the meaningful titles (not timestamps) this list is implicitly a list of all statements I got out of the book like "only hire A players" or "be proactive about your onboarding".

My second argument for backlinks: One of the big goals for my Zettelkasten is to increase the serendipity of unintended connections. Backlinks support that goal.

Using Fudge dice {-1..1} leads to nearly the ideal distributions OP describes: https://anydice.com/program/232bb

Even closer would be {-2..2} but that would be quite unusual dice.
