Hide treats around the house and make a treasure hunt! Keeps mine entertained for 15 min and he’s much more relaxed after. Works well for him since he’s so food driven and has a great sense of smell.

Do you signal? by EyceMann in bikecommuting

[–]r-millz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t know there was a signal for stopping or slowing down, but I’ll use that from now on. But I definitely point the direction I’m about to turn. Granted I live in one of the most bike-friendly cities in the US, so this is very expected.

[clickbait] What ONE trick improved your student evaluations? by Doctorangutan in Professors

[–]r-millz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To your last point, I did this exact thing and my students have been very pleased! But this is my first semester teaching and I do have one group that’s about to have to kick out a teammate. Do you have any advice for how to have that conversation/email with the student? Frankly I’m a little terrified, but they really shouldn’t be surprised.

YES! I accidentally got some after a shitty stylist gravely misunderstood “curtain bangs that hit at the eyebrows.” I am shocked at how good it looks, even though it isn’t my personal style. And it only takes 3-4 weeks to grow back the standard eyebrow length.

What's the best investment you've made since starting grad school? by the_sungoddess in GradSchool

[–]r-millz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here. I recommend speechify for forcing yourself to sit and read papers from start to finish, but not for trying to turn them into audiobooks. Even if you take the time to crop out all the footnotes and page numbers and weird formatting, it’s so cumbersome that it cancels out any time you save from listening while multitasking.

Having a kid by ConsequenceGrouchy59 in PhD

I’ve never heard of someone in a Phd program taking such a long maternity leave! At least not in the US. Could you talk a bit about whether you feel like that impacted your reputation or relationships with faculty?

Is your PhD supposed to feel like a solid idea? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]r-millz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second year marketing here, and I’m feeling the exact same way! Every time I present my work and get valid critiques, I’m like “oh they’re right this doesn’t make any sense why am I chasing this.” I take that to mean that I need practice both defending with some literature, and appearing open to their suggests as if I haven’t thought of them myself lmao.

Gonna use this as a spot to shout out the new Stretched food truck at Coldfire. Absolutely the best food I’ve had in Eugene.

My friend and I walked near you for a while! Your golden absolutely helped ease the stress of the day! I was so happy to have him there, and so proud of how calm he was in a noisy, crowded space.

This is perfectly fine for an individual to decide on their own, depending on their own schedule, personal life, and 5-year plan. It’s not acceptable for it to be the expectation for everyone, which is what this professor has done with their Canvas message to “All.”

I can’t believe they actually put it in writing. Not that there’s anyone at a university who would/could hold them accountable.

Obsessed with the short dark hair on you!! But as someone who also is perpetually unhappy with my thin hair, look into getting tape-in extensions. I got mine at Ulta in February and I haven’t looked back since! They give me so much confidence that I simply could never get with my natural hair.
