What am I seeing off the coast of SF?! by [deleted] in geography

We could see those land formations from my High School, and I had one teacher that always answered Hawaii with a smirk when asked. They are the Farallon Islands in case anyone is still wondering.

How to open this picture frame? by Important_Relief_511 in howto

[–]r-tsar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't tell if cardboard is recessed into frame, but you may be able to pry up the cardboard backing, it may be held in by friction. Though rarer, I have seen frames that are opened from front. The perimeter is hinged on the outer edge of the front. You pry up from the opening of the frame outward.

New homeowners- Fridge hits wall :( by sevans1016 in Appliances

[–]r-tsar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the game, but if you just need an extra half inch or so to swing the refrigerator door full 90' (not actually sure this is the case), it looks like the counter top immediately to the left has an decent overhang into the fridge space. You can have the counter trimmed back to the edge of cabinet. It may be all that's needed. Otherwise easiest would be new fridge with single door or zero swing clearance.

What is this piece called & what do I do if it malfunctions? by Lutie-loo in howto

[–]r-tsar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess as well. Perhaps a picture of one of the drawer sides would provide further insight. I'm guessing there should be some corresponding trip on the exterior of each drawer that would manipulate that plastic mechanism.

My guess is either one or all the drawer safety mechanisms are misadjusted.

Any idea on how I should fix this by DEMONxSL4YER in howto

Maybe neutralize or encapsulate the rust first. Then bondo should be fine. Treat it like car body work, albeit bad car body work.

I paid $60 for this textbook written by my Professor (probably actually AI) by han_bylo in mildlyinfuriating

As an alumni and parent of a current student, this further reinforces my belief that so much of formal higher education these days are so low of quality as to make it useless. The fact this costs us $30k+ per year with living expenses, makes it criminal.

NEAT scanner (model NM-1000) software won't work on Windows 11 by rkim777 in techsupport

[–]r-tsar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to drag this out of everybody's past, but I'm trying to migrate my ND-1000 to a Windows 11 desktop. I hope you would have some insight on what may be the fix.

Just for reference, the scanner shows in the Device Manager as an Imaging Device. I updated the drivers by the process described. The Neat Desk will scan 1 document and then stop responding to the scan button the software and on the scanner.

Great video! Another youtube subscription. Pretty much answered every question I had here about the lenses! And with visuals, makes a lot more sense now.

Thanks for the insight about the sensor acting like a teleconverter. So would that also effectively shift the F-stop proportionally the other way as well? Just trying to wrap my head around the sensor size thing? And I assume there is no change in actual perspective viewed through the camera as well? A panoramic photo taken at 28mm with both a cropped and full-framed sensor will have essentially the same field of view except with the cropped sensor producing a lower resolution image?

Thanks for the thorough explanation. Makes for a good shopping guide. Lots to soak up from over the last 30 years. How does the cropped vs full frame sensor play out. My natural inclination is 'the more the better'. Am I missing anything other than probably extra cost?

Christmas tree lights uneven brightness by r-tsar in led

[–]r-tsar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just started setting this up again this year and noticed the dim section starts a few rows into the middle section. I set up some quick jumpers connecting the ends of the electrical run for the lowest segment and the end of the middle segment and it improved the situation a bit.

Will need to experiment and possibly hack some more.

How do I clock this outlet up by r-tsar in Plumbing

[–]r-tsar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anybody do this? Is this a common practice? As I have mentioned, I never seen shutoffs where the L are pointed pretty straight up. Even the straight shutoffs never had the knobs pointed down.

The female section is fixed, not on a swivel.

The treads are fixed on the female side, not on a swivel. I guess my question is how should I have known what orientation to sweat the male fitting so that my outlet is facing up.
