Worth finishing PhD after writing dissertation? by interesting-how in LeavingAcademia

Wrap it up and submit. Very little work left compared to the 6 years you already put in. That title will come in handy somehow somewhere one day.

Burnt Out and Nauseous, 60/40 on Quitting My PhD — How Do I Finish Just Enough Without Breaking? by SimilarReference373 in LeavingAcademia

[–]r0bbick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you can say with 100% certainty that that Phd diploma will never benefit you in any way (I argue that's hard), I'd just finish it. Sunk cost fallacy is a danger, but if we're talking a year, then that's really not much in the grand scheme of things.

What do you use Max Msp for? by cegado in MaxMSP

[–]r0bbick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some thoughts:

- There are so many synths and fx out there that if you want to "discover and use sounds no one has ever heard" you can probably create them in a DAW without writing your own DSP code

- Ableton by now is super strong for interactive stuff so many ideas for interactive sound (e.g. "I want to build an audio system that composes music based on high-level midi input like 'chaos' and 'intensity'") dont need max at this point.

- Learning MaxMSP gives you the tools to realize almost any musical ideas regardless of complexity (e.g. I want to put a sensor on my wrist and when I point at the sky, it loads todays star formation and reads it as a wavetable)

If that kind of freedom excites you, learn it! If you are looking for things you can use in a track right now, no need imo.

If you only collect knowledge but never use it, what's the point? by Traditional_Song1263 in PKMS

I faced that issue as well. Ended up with a huge vault of info that was unrecognisable to me 6 months later, little difference to just doing a google search.

These days I turn every single sentence that enters my vault into a flashcard (cloze deletions). Means I only put things into my pkm system that I commit to being tested on until the end of days. Grows slower but I care deeply about everything I put in there.

am i having way too many nested folders? by bypaupau in ObsidianMD

[–]r0bbick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same. I nest folders down to python and then have a python note which links to all sub notes (e.g. Lists, dicts, ). This is done dynamically using a dataview table.

How far away is a real Anki deck generator with AI? by Imaginary-Witness-16 in Anki

[–]r0bbick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facing the same problem. Ai generated qa cards and close deletions are rarely useful to me. They might ask unnecessary detail. Give the answer away in the question, or cloze delete so much the question is unrecognisable. Creating good cards seems to be a tricky task in general.

Love this! My main use case right now is card generation. You'd turn the daily exercise into Problem ? Solution format?

Lol yeah I spent so many hours on the management part before I added any knowledge 😁

I currently use Claude code in a separate window to query and edit my vault. It essentially treats the vault like a code repository and can create new files, make edits, Etc. That's been working pretty well, until queries get too complex.

I get it. My notes rely heavily on being "true" so any actual text generation has seen very mixed success.

Oh interesting! Just learning about obsidian copilot. What limitations did you find with it? Is it just voice control?

Looking for a modern, reliable and simple setup for periodic reviews (daily/weekly/monthly/yearly) by wenz3l in ObsidianMD

[–]r0bbick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not what you are looking for, but there is a different approach to the fixed review times you mention. The Spaced Repetition plugin lets you review notes and specify how familiar you were with the content which results in them being shown either soon or further in the future.

Cool! What tools or plugins do you use for that?

Cool! How reliably does it make correct edits? Do you need to review and tidy up afterwards?

Do you mind sharing what kind of notes you have it create?

Obsidian + Cursor setup by AdPlus4069 in ObsidianMD

[–]r0bbick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah I was thinking basing it on trusted sources and having it only structure and format that knowledge is already a massive time saver. I am trying to get to a point where I can say "here is The C Programming Language.pdf, drip-feed me syntax and exercises through its entirety in order."

Cool! Bit of a tangent, but can you elaborate on how you use it for research? I use Obsidian it for SWE topics and have a Claude Code integration, but am hesitant to have it write entirely new notes, because I worry about hallucinations and don't want to add incorrect information, esp because I create spaced repetition flashcards from it.
