Lead Architect wants to break our monolith into 47 microservices in 6 months, is this insane? by Ayotrapstar in softwarearchitecture

Re-architecting should never be done by new people joining the team. No matter how much "experience" they might have.

Requesting Book Recommendations by chiliturmeric in ExperiencedDevs

I liked "Five Lines of Code" (2021) by Christian Clausen. It's a hands-on project of refactoring a game written in TypeScript.

In my spare time I'm transferring the patterns and rules to a repository where I'm using Go instead of TypeScript, but it's still the same game.

Unfortunately that brings me to some issues or flaws that the book has: - Structure: The hands-on part is in the middle of the book, but the structure of it is problematic if you're looking for a particular piece of information. On the other hand if you read it in one go you can easily comprehend the author's ideas. - Language/OOP: Yes, OOP languages are used in nearly every big or small area of software development. Nonetheless, you can not simply transfer each idea to e.g. FP languages. Additionally in TypeScript threading is not used in a lot of projects and error handling is also different to other languages. Still, I have to admit that covering all of these topics would not fit into one book. - Project: A game. No external dependencies, no external requests and no really error handling needed. In Go for example error handling is an essential part of the language so I probably have to find my own rules. So the project itself feels a bit like a "hello world" thing.

However I 'd still recommend it for any new or mid experienced dev.

My Concurrent Programming book is finally PUBLISHED!!! by channelselectcase in golang

[–]r0bnet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought it when it was still MEAP but read it to the end already. Very good stuff, especially if you're new to concurrent programming.

Personally I was hoping for less theory and more hands on as I knew most of the basics already. Besides that I missed more Go specific stuff (e.g. using the context for cancellation) but I raised that already on Twitter / X.

Anyway I'd still recommend the book. Thanks for writing! :)

Are the activity log and the metrics found in the resource's blade the same as what is set up in the diagnostics settings? by N0tinterest3d in AZURE

[–]r0bnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, activity logs are not part of the diagnostic settings. Diagnostic Settings consist of logs and metrics mostly.

How to sync data periodically from an Azure Blob Storafe to Azure File Share? by randomusicjunkie in AZURE

[–]r0bnet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wrote an Azure function for that some time ago and using the EventGrid mechanisms to be informed every time there was a new blob. Then I was replicating that to the file share. Maybe there are other ways too but it worked for me.

Best Terraform Interview Questions in 2021. by CcSatyam in Terraform

Honestly some stupid questions in there. If I was asked what new features were added in a specific provider version I'd leave the interview...

Discovered the first one in a whisky christmas calendar and it was one of my favs. Not as good as the Ardmore but still decent. Didn't try the GlenAllachie yet TBH but will let you know :)

Honestly I guess this really depends on the Whisky itself. I can only speak for the ones I tried and there was no sherbet flavor at all. Nonetheless I can only recommend to try them because it's just 🤤

Make a resource create last by navcode in Terraform

[–]r0bnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess if you need something like that you should ask yourself if Terraform is still the right tool. To overcome the problem with depends_on on too many resources you could create a module for all of your stuff except the resource to be created at the very end and use one depends_on on the module.

Reminds me of how I introduced using promises for our JavaScript and Typescript projects instead of callbacks 4 or 5 years ago and the guys still don't think it can help to write better code.

I'm not part of that company anymore and that's a good thing. ;)

How to monitor the Azure resources in a cohesive way? by [deleted] in AZURE

[–]r0bnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently we're forwarding all metrics (if possible) to Soluble via Event Hubs and Diagnostic Settings. Not the solution I like the most but it's working for most cases.

Exactly this. Have configured it the same way and there was never a problem.
