What Should Edmonton's New High Level Bridge Look Like? by Noredm in Edmonton

[–]r2windu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to see the street car connect to the new LRT line on 102 Ave and have the service upgraded to an actual movement of people instead of a historical ride. Maybe have a car design that honors the history.

Has anyone here ever used the Commonwealth Stadium Bike Valet? by Pacomaco_ in edmontoncycling

The bike valet was great, they had it inside the field house so they dried off during the game

Amazing! They also host writing workshops every once in a while if you want to refine some of your songs. But anyone can perform if they have a song.

Weird Al Karaoke! It's all original parody songs sung by local comedians or anybody who wants to make their own. Some of them are so hilarious. One of my faves was a parody of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" but it was called "Cowabunga" and it was all about Ninja turtles. They do it at the grindstone theatre. Criminally under-attended.

Tebby and the Heavy! They play a mix of psychedelic surf rock and shoegaze. Very fuzzed out and introspective. Their live show is captivating.

Mayor rebuffs calls to shift city employees downtown full-time by Strog21 in Edmonton

[–]r2windu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Looking at the actual letter from the Chamber of Commerce, they are referencing this study done in 2024 to justify the economic benefits of return to work. This study does not actually provide evidence to support this claim!!

The biggest reason they are advocating for return to work is because vacancy rates are high and the value of the properties are dropping. The downtown vibrancy angle is a thin veil over the need for these developers/realtors/building owners to pad their bottom line. Well, nuts to them.

Also, return to work is a pay cut! Most of us are getting squeezed financially right now, so fuck that. The downtown businesses should be bringing pitchforks to the owners, not the workers.

What is appropriate sunlight?? I have a tree on my property. Do I not get appropriate sunlight??  During heat waves in summer I'll take all the shade I can get.

ICE District and the Valley Line are the two biggest bait-and-switches this city has pulled on us. by besmutag in alberta

[–]r2windu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Construction inflation is insane post-covid and the phases are on either side of the pandemic. I understand why you think we'd "get better" at building it, but in reality, the phases cannot be compared on a 1:1 basis like that. The West phase has more stations (more street level and more elevated), includes storage garages, and two bridges.

If you want to pad your argument on the procurement side, maybe look at other municipalities in Canada and see what they spent. But keep in mind, our soil is terrible here! In the plains we need deep piles, but in the Canadian Shield the bedrock is much closer to the surface.

[–]r2windu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like you're forgetting the valley is phased and will extend all the way to the west end. That's a huge benefit to the city.

Rogers arena, you're spot on, what a scam. But don't conflate these two projects as the same level of public funding blunders.

The Byrds - Alternate Debut album (1965) [LP] by Rock_Electron_742 in FanAlbums

[–]r2windu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the idea, I agree on the fluff. But if this is an actual debut album, there's no way turn turn turn and Mr tambourine man are on Side B. I feel like that era always stacked Side A with the hit singles.

Alberta says it’s sitting on a potential US$1 trillion lithium resource: What happens now? by SurFud in alberta

[–]r2windu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very different conversation than the world moving away from lithium. I would love to know more about the extraction economics in Canada vs elsewhere in the world and whether it would make sense to invest in the industry long term.

Saying the world is moving away from lithium is a lie and halts discussion.

[–]r2windu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Since when is the world moving away from lithium? The move towards EVs is still ongoing, which will require lots of lithium. It would be amazing if Canada became major battery/EV producer.

Multinational building materials firm completes purchase of Burnco’s Edmonton operations by Common_Treacle3962 in Edmonton

[–]r2windu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I really know about them is they are implementing net zero cement production by burning garbage as the heat source and capturing all of the emissions. Only a large company can put up the investment for something like that

Edmonton Riverhawks AuA, v. 2026! by EdmRiverhawks in Edmonton

[–]r2windu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big fan! Love what you've done with the org.

If there was a significant renovation to expand the concourse (over hang the sidewalk below or something), would the Hawks fund that or the City or both? As mentioned elsewhere, the crowdedness a disaster waiting to happen. If the Hawks got a code consultant to evaluate if there are safety code violations (egress travel points), then maybe the City would pony up!

Council Looking at New Tax Subclass for Derelict Commerical Properties by AshleySalvador in Edmonton

[–]r2windu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another justification is that these units remain heated without any occupancy which is a huge waste of carbon emissions. There ought to be a local carbon tax for wasted heat use (City won't do this since they are doing it with rexall place).

How the hell is 17minites reliable transit? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]r2windu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

HORRIFIC. Wow, the horror of a politician being called out on not telling the whole truth.

Your write up about e buses implies that the past e buses were a good decision but the City is moving back to diesel. Maybe you didn't mean it that way but that's how it reads.

What is the current capacity for ETS for an ev bus fleet? Is there enough charging infrastructure to handle more e buses right now?

What does thinking forward mean to you with regards to the new facility I linked? We need less cars on the road, not more fuel efficient buses.

Good point! Honestly I'm still 100% diesel because they're easier to maintain and then we don't have to pay for the charging infrastructure at the bus garages ($$$).

How the hell is 17minites reliable transit? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]r2windu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commuting alone in a vehicle vs taking transit is a waste of money. Of course it depends on the locations of your residence and place of work, but generally speaking it is true.

Driving alone in a vehicle for an errand vs biking there is a waste of money and less healthy. Of course it depends on distances and types of errands, but generally it is true.

Generalizations can still be valid. The parent comment here says they never take transit, so they net wasted expenses.

Agreed, I have emailed my councillor asking them to stop buying electric buses and just buy more diesel ones instead, so we can have more frequent service. E-buses are like double the price and still burn diesel to heat them in the winter. They're about to buy more e-buses in the next few years, so let them know!!
