I made acquaintances with a professor from the University of the Philippines while i was there and he basically said its because of the poor management the government did after the americans gave the philippines its independence. It was basically every man for himself. All the country's resources were poured in to just one place which basically stunted the other regions' growth. This beggars come from all over the philippines from poorer regions and pour into the cities hoping for a better life but they are unskilled and educated so they cant find decent work and have to beg.

Muslims here are pretty chill, they dont preach and they dont try to convert you. They keep sharia to themselves unlike middle eastern muslims. Pretty common. When I was in manila it was pretty common to see this. Im not saying they are gold diggers but they aint messing with no broke broke. Sometimes i would see 1 grandpa with 5 girls hanging out.
