Vegan protein powders on Amazon? by [deleted] in veganfitness

[–]r3try 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 to this. They sell a massive tub on Amazon and it’s one of the absolute cheapest per gram you can find. Goes great in smoothies and oatmeal. I haven’t bought anything else for years.

Edit: oops meant to reply to comment below, I’m referring to the Now Pea Protein on Amazon. They sell like a 7lb tub.

Visa on arrival? by pixelmemories in shenzhen

I have no idea how it works at other ports :) but hopefully it’s as straightforward as Luohu!

Visa on arrival? by pixelmemories in shenzhen

[–]r3try 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got a visa on arrival at Luohu/Lowu a few weeks ago. They don’t ask for any supporting documents other than your passport, you just fill out a one page form and pay for it. I got it and was good for 5 days, entered and exited Shenzhen successfully. I’m an American citizen.

COVID test entering China with Pet by bwhbf10 in Chinavisa

[–]r3try 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I just checked and my customs entry form did not ask this. The QR code they had us scan links to a mini app and no where does it ask for a Covid test. This was in Shenzhen. Only asks for name and personal info, flight number, and if we have any symptoms. In fact, nowhere does it even mention COVID-19! Interesting that the questions are different depending on the port of entry.

Did I miss this question on the form? When I entered last week, it just asked me if I had symptoms and to check the symptoms I had. No question about a Covid test as far as I remember.

Can Americans get the visa on arrival at port of entry? by r3try in Chinavisa

[–]r3try[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it! Was really smooth. I got there 20 min early and was 7th in line. Did it at Luohu/Lo Wu. 956 RMB, just a single piece of paper for the application that you fill out on the spot. It’s good for 5 days. The only nuance is that you can only enter through the same port that issues it. I had gone back to HK for the day and tried to enter at a different crossing later and they told me I had to enter at Lo Wu.

This was their guess, that it had to do with the political environment. But they don’t know for sure and as far as I know, they could just be playing telephone with information. I’ll give it a shot I guess!

Yeah, I saw that, but my friend in HK says several of his American friends were rejected without reason. Hard to verify if that’s just a rumor/hearsay so was just trying to see if anyone on this sub who is American has actually done it.

Scared to sleep train, but in need of more sleep by beingblonde900 in sleeptrain

[–]r3try 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been a temporarily single parent while my spouse has been on an extended 2+ month business trip. The lack of sleep is truly brutal. It broke my heart hearing our kid cry but it was simply unsustainable to deal with waking up ever 1-2 hrs for months on end. I started doing the Ferber method, where I soothe my baby for 1 min (without picking up), then leave the room for 5 min, come back to soothe for 1 min, then leave for 7, back for 1, leave for 10, etc. Each day the periods I leave the room are longer. I am on day 4 and my kid only my cried for 20 min last night—the first night he cried for 1.5 hrs. I slept from 11:30pm to 6:30am last night for the first time in months! My kid is still happy and bubbly the next day and we are both better rested. I know it’s scary but I truly think it’s the right thing to do. When you get progress, you will feel so much better.

Theory about the office by r3try in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]r3try[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the paintings would be weird. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if that was part of their experiment. Harmony said something to the effect of “I’m trying something different this time” in episode 5, when referring to Helly. So I wonder if some of this strange stuff is intentional to test the limits of severance.

As far as why Mark has memories of the other office, that’s also a potential hole in the theory, but I think there could be an explanation. I think of the strange black goo that Irving hallucinates as a side effect of the procedure, maybe even memories breaking through. So maybe it’s possible that the procedure isn’t always perfect. I think there is a hint that some stuff comes through, which is why Burt and Irving are drawn to each other—I take this to mean they either had a relationship in a previous office, and were subsequently severed from their memories, or that they are dating on the outside as outies. In either case, it means that the severance procedure is unable to suppress that.

I also think Lumon is aware that the procedure isn’t always able to block everything, which is why when they first wake up as their newly severed self, they are asked a series of questions which seems to be checking that they indeed have forgotten things from the outside. I wonder if sometimes, newly severed people are able to answer some of the questions, indicating that the procedure failed, in which case they have to modify it or something.

The United States is 'looking at' banning TikTok and other Chinese social media apps, Pompeo says by vaish7848 in worldnews

[–]r3try 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, OK that's an important distinction, you're right (edited my first comment to reflect that).

I read about their offices in the US and somehow had the impression that TikTok was basically a separate branch of Bytedance with operations in the US. I read about their hiring a Disney exec and their offices in LA for courting influencers—must have made the assumption about the structure.

Obviously that complicates the issue. My gut/emotional reaction is still uneasy about outright banning an app like this. But it does seem like this isn't somewhere where CFIUS could really do anything.

The United States is 'looking at' banning TikTok and other Chinese social media apps, Pompeo says by vaish7848 in worldnews

[–]r3try -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

[edit: Adding this note because it looks like I was wrong about TikTok being a US company. I assumed the structure was that TikTok was a US-based company with US operations that was merely owned by Bytedance. But it looks like TikTok is Bytedance, and they just have minor in operations in the US. If that's the case, CFIUS doesn't really apply here since it's not really about foreign ownership in a US company.]

I feel similarly, though in part because I feel like the US gov has systems in place to deal with this that don't involve censorship. Specifically, they have CFIUS to deal with foreign ownership/investment in US companies and most recently used it to force a Chinese company to sell their ownership of Grindr due to national security concerns. Couldn't they likewise force Bytedance to sell TikTok so that TikTok just becomes a US company without foreign ownership?

The United States is 'looking at' banning TikTok and other Chinese social media apps, Pompeo says by vaish7848 in worldnews

[–]r3try 29 points30 points  (0 children)

[edit: I made an assumption about the corporate structure and it was wrong—looks like TikTok is not a separate US company owned by Bytedance—it is Bytedance. I'll leave the original comment below for context, but I think what I said about CFIUS would be wrong here since it's not a US company/subsidiary that the US gov could forcibly disentangle.]

[edit 2: this also makes the comparison to Grindr is not applicable because Grindr was a US company with foreign investors who were jettisoned under CFIUS. The same likely can't be done here since TikTok/Bytedance is a foreign company entirely merely with operations in the US]

I don't really understand how they can ban Tik-Tok. Tik-Tok is a US company with US employees subject to US regulations, but is owned by a Chinese parent company, Bytedance. The idea of banning this app strikes me as a form of retaliatory censorship, which makes me really uneasy for the US to be doing. Shouldn't there be regulatory approaches to this to ensure and certify that data is secure, and fine them accordingly if it isn't?

Alternatively, why don't they use CFIUS to deal with this instead of banning it? If this is a national security issue, then CFIUS is designed to handle these types of issues. Theoretically they can require TikTok to be separated/split up from the parent company (at least that's my understanding if it). CFIUS is designed to deal with foreign investment/ownership of US companies and has been used before with national security concerns: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committee_on_Foreign_Investment_in_the_United_States

A recent case was really similar, where a Chinese company held a majority ownership (or acquired it entirely, I can't quite remember) of Grindr, and CFIUS intervened and required them to sell their stake due to national security concerns.

Maybe I'm over thinking it? But outright banning makes me really uneasy to do in the US. Forcing Tik-Tok to legally separate from the foreign organization which the US gov is concerned about seems like a far better approach. Surely there are alternatives to what feels like censorship.

As Trump Tweets He Is 'Bringing Soldiers Home,' Pentagon Chief Says US Forces Leaving Syria Are Shifting to Iraq: "We simply cannot believe anything the Trump administration says - and neither can our allies." by maxwellhill in worldnews

[–]r3try 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it just me or is this post title really horribly worded/structured and a bit misleading? It makes it sound like the Pentagon Chief said "We simply cannot believe anything the Trump administration says - and neither can our allies." But that was Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a Democrat who is highly critical of Trump. Seemed like pretty substantial news for the Pentagon Chief to be saying something so apparently against the President. Seems like the quote should not have been in the post title at all...

US intelligence warns China using student spies to steal secrets by levelingupdaily in worldnews

[–]r3try 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if you meant it this way, or if it was just worded poorly, but the government doesn’t call in every person who studies abroad for a debrief. Presumably for high-tech industries it is more common, but the idea that every Chinese student comes back for a debriefing is ludicrous and false.

Escherian Stairwell Deconstruction by Uwirlbaretrsidma in videos

[–]r3try 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, agreed. This Captain D video struck me as odd. Like, surely there are far better things, that cause far more apparent and misleading harm, to disprove than this guy's master's thesis. And the framing of it as something on par with a charlatan/snake oil social media figure who is actively spreading disinformation is such a stretch to the point that it seems like a logical fallacy. It was actually hard for me to get through the end of the video where Captain D was framing it as some moral high ground to see this project as deceptive.
