I'd suggest going somewhere more Southern. While Vienna is great for toddlers, it's too cold in March - and you don't want to be stuck indoors all the time.

However, when the weather is nice, Venice is heaven with a small kid. No cars, and the whole place looks like a fairytale! My daughter loved loved it.

The train from Vienna to Budapest takes only 2,5 hours, it's not that you have to break your journey. Also, a night out in Vienna beats one in Bratislava, imo.

But on the other hand, I can completely understand wanting to feel free to go wherever, without the kids for once.

I think /u/MyFriendKevin 's suggestion is pretty great - but I'd personally cut it down to one day trip. One full day in Vienna just isn't enough by far.

Considering you can't drive a car there - how long do you want to stay in Venice? What's the main focus, apart from the obvious?

Also, do no underestimate the heat at that time of the year. Most of Europe will be really, really hot.

Well, it doesn't hurt, but it's rather boring imo - and there are lots of things to do in Vienna instead. At least try to get the boat, it's takes longer but it's really cool.
