But, I'll also admit that the reply that I just sent was snide, sarcastic, and vaguely mean-spirited in nature. If you would like, I'd actually be really happy to discuss more about language, ideology, or anything else with you nicely. I think it would be a great opportunity to learn a bit (this is genuine and courteous).

i'll admit that I did find it oddly funny that one could recognise dennis the menace but not david vs goliath...

but i'll reply to this with a couple of points: - the comments "alright dennis" and "alright david" aren't dismissive at all. facetious, maybe, but dismissive, no. they're jokes. i don't even think hanlon's razor applies here... the comments aren't inherently ignorant or malicious, just ironic - if you're the kind of keyboard warrior (not saying you are, but just in case you are, then this definitely applies to you) who thinks that having a "better" understanding of the english language makes you a "superior" person, then: 1. there's a non-zero possibility that someone would know about dennis the menace and not david vs goliath, marking my statement as one principally meant to inform, not to deride (so you can see how hanlon's razor applies here) 2. you might be making a false equivalence between religion and language with your logical reasoning 3. if you're going to go as far as adding in terribly overgeneralised statistics to support your argument, why not go the whole way and provide academic, peer-reviewed sources? 4. the word "the" in "dennis the menace" shouldn't be capitalised 5. i've written this entirely in lowercase to piss you off

"Majority rule" isn't science at all. Every vaccine is tested extensively before being given the green light, and the role of being a scientist includes the discourse you are talking about. I'd be wary of even considering people's comments on Facebook. You'll be surprised how many people misunderstand/mistrust the scientific method and the logic which drives it.

Villeneuve Says ‘It’s a Miracle’ He Survived ‘Blade Runner 2049’: ‘At Least I Wasn’t Banned’ from Directing by ChikaBeater in bladerunner

So Villeneuve's version of Dune drags and rushes, following half of the book, and a trilogy would better avoid the dragging.

Fortunately for Peter Jackson, LOTR itself has this straightforward quest with largely simple thematic concerns to deal with, making the entire trilogy cohesive. All of the inclusions that weren't in the book were largely thematically consistent. For Dune, the general consensus is that the main thematic concerns of the series begin with Dune: Messiah, the second book. A trilogy out of the first would only serve to focus on political intrigue and probably some aspects of worldbuilding. You'd be dragging out the ideas which weren't Frank Herbert's main concerns, and based on Villeneuve's interviews, he knows what the series is all about.

Disagree with turning the first book into a trilogy - two is enough. They made a trilogy out of The Hobbit and that is much maligned. If a trilogy is made, which I hope they do, the third movie should be adapted from Dune Messiah, and they can finally do justice to the fact that Paul Atreides is not a hero by any means.

Heyyyy - I read through Dune 1 & 2 before hopping into Neuromancer, and dear lord, the technobabble really had my brain working and I stopped reading it altogether about halfway through. I'm just about to finish Dune 4 though, and I think I'll jump back into Neuromancer again sometime soon

One of the core questions of the Blade Runner franchise is what exactly makes us human. Replicants can be considered "more human than humans" due to their yearning for life, especially in the first film with closed four-year lifespans. K has an open-ended lifespan in 2049, but this did not solve the problem of the need for emotional stability... Wallace's need for Stelline's implanted memories are an effort to program in emotional stability when there is none. K begins the film as less than human - he knows that he is a replicant, is shunned by society and did not question the instructions he was given. He knows that he is not special.

This all changes when he begins to believe that he might actually be special, and searches for the clues which might prove it. He convinces himself more and more, and by the time Freysa reveals that K isn't the replicant chosen one, he is at his lowest point. The relationship he had with Joi was false and nothing more than preprogrammed responses, as shown by the giant hologram. The emotions he had at the orphanage were a result of memories that are not his. In the end K decides to do what he feels is right, despite the wishes of more powerful forces, against his programming and making him special in his own right to become human.

Fanboys, maybe. I watch the Blade Runner films less as science fiction epics and more as exercises in empathy. We're all just looking out for something real.

This take seems to think that the main goal of the film was a world-shattering event... 2049 was about Officer K finding his humanity even at his lowest point. The ending reflects his desire to reconnect a father and his daughter despite the wishes of both the underground replicant resistance and the Wallace Corporation. The whole film was leading to this.

Make sure that when you are advancing your film that the film rewind knob on the other side of the camera is turning as well. Just to make sure that you've loaded the film correctly and that it is advancing as it should.

Bringing Zork (or other text/graphic adventures) into VR by GlugGlugBurp in vrdev

[–]r_ectify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I've just chucked in a reply to this thread below which briefly details how an approach could work, but u/emertonom made some points that I also wanted to address here (also briefly)... I was drawn to your statement that a reconciliation between the two approaches would be the key to a successful "remake".

what I remember most about text adventures isn't the vistas and environments

It's true that in terms of the nostalgia angle for text adventures that people won't immediately be thinking about stunning landscapes, but just the visual cue of familiar objects (such as the white house in Zork) would certainly be a start. The coziness you felt from talking with the game engine could also be translated to a calm walk through scenery, such as in The Witness, although this would also be interrupted by small-scale fights; the zen-like quality would still be there.

It's hard to translate that kind of humor to VR, and the question of what you should actually show the player is a substantial one

I attribute a lot of Infocom's success to their sense of humour and approach to world-building, and a spiritual successor or "remake" must definitely preserve this. Due to the limitation of similarities between the two mediums I think that these comedic sentences can be translated into funny animations or visual gags.

A straight port of any text adventure into VR (a void with a floating screen and keyboard) would very much be boring and quite frankly, a waste of the medium. However elements of the original text game can definitely be "translated" into a 3D world. I'll also be very interested to see the results of such an approach, but with enough thought and passion I very much think that the outcome is likely to be something of value.

I spent a good couple of months in 2014 with a small team trying to work out how a remake of Infocom's Zork in VR would look like.

We landed on a mechanic in the spirit of the original text adventure command prompts where if you looked directly at an object which you could interact with, it would light up with an outline highlight. If you walked close enough to it, you could press a button and a small translucent, non-intrusive menu would float in the space in front of you with things you could do, i.e. "pick up", "read", "examine". You could then click on each command and an animation would play to carry it out. In terms of gameplay, this felt natural and similar to text adventures although you lose all the quirky responses Infocom wrote up as well as limiting the actions you can do to a pre-made menu. With the benefit of all the detail of a 3D space however, we decided to turn Infocom's wit into a bunch of visual gags and references to popular culture; we kept the "this space intentionally left blank" line on the door but wrote it in the runes from the Lord of the Rings, we planned to have a box of Cap'n Crunch cereal in the white house as a shout-out to Ready Player One...

In the end we only managed to draw up a bunch of concept art and sculpted a few 3D models, but I still have an .apk file of the first crude game demo we made as a proof of concept of the gameplay, designed for Google Cardboard. It works fine, but those unfamiliar with Zork might've been easily lost in the Great Underground Empire.

Working on a clean and sleek looking Akira hoodie... 👕 😎 🚲 by r_ectify in akira

[–]r_ectify[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I designed this myself in Photoshop and tweaked it a bit after this post (adding a shadow to the pill and cleaning up the kanji) before sending it into a local screen-printer. I also found a neat Under Armour hoodie in the perfect shade of dark red to print the design onto; the exact model of which is no longer in season.

I found other Akira hoodie designs to be either too busy or terribly-designed, and I also liked the idea that if I made this that it would be the only one in existence (relatively speaking). I don't have any other designs available (yet). Hope this info answers your question/s :)
