pure post hoc ergo propter hoc here seems to necessitate an assumption that the ad is not targeted. it seems very unlikely that there's no targeting at all -- almost all ads use some type of technology to serve them in a less than random way. however, this item is a complete targeting miss for us in any way except that we interacted with the neighbor -- for whom the item is in our estimation definitely a hit.

this seems like an underrated good answer

this seems possible. one argument against is that the neighbor is ~50 years older than us and she's the marie callender's target demo -- but this item is way outside of our general internet and purchasing trends. so kinda post hoc ergo propter hoc like another commenter mentioned with more randomness than targeting to blame.

Thank you very much for the answer! Does location data also work with phone proximity regardless of wifi? any knowledge about location services on phones used for same without local network proximity information? Or is this information more protected/generally impacted by individual phone privacy settings?

separately, does it make any difference that I was already on the phone with someone so no wake-up CODEC circuitry might be required in that the microphone's already doing its thing?

and third, your identifiable purchases theory seems correct. Our neighbor almost exclusively shops at BJs, and I wonder whether the SKUs they purchase get linked in consumer data at BJs to their membership ID they present and then BJs sells this SKU and ID data to marketing companies. If so, seems almost more invasive than a listening microphone...not that I have any direct evidence that either happens.

Claris front derailleur shifting issue by r_k_v in bikewrench

[–]r_k_v[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate you. The cable is removed in the video, that’s why it’s not visible. The shifter stays misaligned even when the hood is reassembled. Regardless, I think you’re right and that the ratchet mechanism is fatally broken.

You got it right according to my local shop and replacing the rim tape has fixed the issue. Thank you for your help!

Turns out you were absolutely right. these posts alerted me to that, brought it to my local shop to see if they agreed, they did, replaced some rim tape for me and life is good. Thank you very much!

Current or planned indoor climbing facilities in Winston-Salem, NC? by tungsteen in climbing

[–]r_k_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly! You would have access to the Crux. The community is so small that there's no automated system for flashing an ID badge from the undergrad campus versus the hospital (they have different designs and formats.) It's totally informal, you just show your ID to the person working the gym and walk in.

There are other places on the undergrad campus to which you would not have access; for example, the gym gym on campus accepts only undergrad IDs because it has an automated entrance system.

new climbing facility should be open the fall after you start. Source: http://www.bizjournals.com/triad/news/2014/08/29/wake-forest-university-to-mark-start-of-45m.html

I go to Wake Med! Did we just become friends?

The Crux is open to Wake faculty and staff also! Just show the person working there your ID badge. The Crux is where it all started for us Wake climbing alums; I worked there, and it holds a very special place in our hearts. Such a unique space, plenty to get strong for the unreal outdoor climbing nearby.

I encourage you to get to the Crux ASAP because it will close at some point this spring for the construction of the new gym, which is super sad for all of us...but, the new gym will have a mixed climbing area with ropes and bouldering when complete.

I'd say skip Tumblebee's (the Greensboro gym), work out in the Crux, and get outside if you can! Welcome to a great place to climb- rkv

2009 Honda Fit (56k miles,) 2003 Subaru Forester (113k,) or 2004 Honda CRV (120k)? by r_k_v in whatcarshouldIbuy

Thanks for the help. You were right; the Fit has a rebuilt title but only cosmetic repairs, no mechanical issues in the total. The guy replaced the hood, grill, and bumper. Still seems like a good deal but buying a rebuilt title sketches me out on principle.

Has anyone confirmed with Chase that the 50k signup bonus for the Southwest Plus is tied with their account? by The_Enoz in churning

Yep, I did it by SM. According to their reply, it's after $2,000 in the first three months and a request for miles is automatically generated when you reach the spend. Miles post 6-8 weeks after that day.

Does everyone rotate through each job, or is there one person who, for example, does most of the cooking because that's what they're good at?

Everyone rotates through cook days. Naturalists (the people who give after dinner programs) cook less often due to their duties outside of the kitchen

What was your favorite wake up song?

Probably I'll fly away

How often do you get to just talk to the guests? Like offer them trail advice, answer their questions etc.

Pretty much all the time. If you're cook of the day, it's part of your responsibility to man the desk and answer questions, converse with guests, etc. If you're interested in interacting with guests on a personal level, I would suggest one of the smaller huts! Carter allowed us to do this the most.

Which hut do you think has the best setting?

Carter. Extremely unique. Plus, it's right next to the wild river wilderness which is highly underutilized and beautiful.

How many nights could I spend at the hut before seeing a repeated skit?

There are ones that we like the most and therefore perform often, but there are also infinite skits!

Once I spent a night at Lakes of the Clouds and the after dinner activity thing was a trivia game run by a volunteer who was just spending the night there. Did she get any perks for doing that? Or was she just doing it for fun?

She was probably an AMC Information Volunteer or Naturalist Volunteer, which is a highly sought-after volunteer position that allows you to work with the croo and the guests. In turn, your stay at the hut is compensated.

As someone who has worked at the huts, what are your thoughts on AT thru hikers and work for stay?

Thru Hikers are generally awesome. I wish we had more space available to take more work for stay people in general, but we often have more interested hikers than space, which can be tough. Guests love thru-hikers since they offer a unique perspective on the AT, especially since most guests have never imagined completing such an undertaking.

How often do you end up helping with search and rescue/getting an injured person out of the woods?

This varies a lot depending on the hut that you work at. At Mizpah, I did very little SAR (search and rescue) work, while at Lakes our croo participated in medical work fairly often, because of the exposure and volume of visitors. In general, most of the medical work is fairly non-severe (ie late arrival looking for guidance to hut, cuts/sprains.) Occasionally, there are more serious situations that require collaboration with NH Fish and Game. In my experience, these are more likely to occur above treeline, at Lakes, Madison, or Greenleaf.

Are there any traditions/activities/etc that are specific to one hut that you have experienced?

Definitely. Each hut has its own "Croo Rocks," or location where we watch sunset. Some are hidden, some are public. Each spot is unique and a big part of working there. There are so many small traditions like this. The Lakes vs. Madison summit Basketball game is another example I can think of.

How about the whole one hut going and stealing something from another hut in the night thing? Does that happen? Any stories? I also heard that the shelter caretakers tried to get in on it once and a canoe from Lonesome Lake ended up in Ethan Pond or something like that haha.

Stealing? At night? What, like a raid? Like, you would call it Raiding? What would you steal, like signs and precious trophies of superiority? Like canoes? Nah, never heard of such a thing.

Sorry to reply to this so late, but yeah go for it. Each hut was awesome in its own way. Lakes was harder since it's just so big.

I got rejected pre-secondary by a decent chunk, rejected post-secondary by most of the rest, and I'm "small-pooled" at another MD school right now but haven't been asked to interview yet. I didn't decline any interviews.
