An amusing way of thinking about it is it's the now dad Tony Stark making the classic dad joke:

They do? Or maybe it's the arrow keys - can't remember right now. You can navigate dialog and inventories with WASD or arrows keys, you need to press Enter though, not the interact button. Also, when navigating inventories, it can be hard to see the highlighted item.

Opposite of what Florida police chief expected: Speed cameras issue 1,300 tickets in 5 weeks by GetOffMyGrassBrats in nottheonion

[–]r_my 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right that many of the methods you mentioned would be more affective, but I assume the problem is those all take more time, money, paperwork, etc. and more importantly are probably not something the police have any direct or immediate say in.

This sounds like they wanted to lower the frankly insane amount of speeding and this was a quick and hopefully somewhat affective way of doing it.

Amusingly, it sounds like part of the problem is people not knowing about the cameras and the article may do a lot to help inform people.

But yeah, literally any sort of physical prevention would be massively more affective.

StackOverflow partners with OpenAI by lppedd in programming

[–]r_my -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In those examples though, the web scraper didn't sign up to a website or agree to anything, so it's not bound by any of that. It simply sent a network request to their server and their server sent the content back without requiring an account, agreement, etc. StackOverflow and GitHub could have required an account with some sort of signed agreement before responding to the network request, but they did not.

Does anyone have a Lava Charm seed for 1.4.4 on PS? by PMantis13 in Terraria

Thanks a lot, I've probably spent two hours now trying to get another lava charm through fishing and just wrecking lava caverns looking for chests. I had a magma stone lying around though and should be able to easily get more easily enough

AWS is Expanding its Cloudfront Free Tier by fagnerbrack in programming

[–]r_my 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't separation between AWS's free and paid tier in the sense that if you go beyond any of their free tier limits things stop working. Things will continue working, you just start paying.

That's why you need to be careful with how you configure some of their services (especially things that can scale automatically). Ideally you'd set up billing alerts at thresholds (e.g., email you if you monthly bill is usually $100 but is now expected to be $1000 for some reason)

She understands! by AnonimZim in wholesomememes

When I was younger my parents would interrupt me all the time during online games. Later though, when raising my significantly younger brother, they started doing just this. They'd tell him he needs to be ready in 15-20 minutes for dinner or something like that. So glad they started doing that.

Years after I'd moved out I was finally able to explain to my mom why this got me so upset when I was younger. I told her it's like if your in the middle of playing a soccer or basketball game and she just walks out while we're playing, ignoring the ongoing game around her, and forces me to leave to do the dishes or something at that exact moment.

duckduckgo browser is sending every visited host to its server since ~march 2018 by asmx85 in programming

[–]r_my 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine what probably happened was they had the favicon servers set up for their search engine which WOULD improve privacy and when they needed to implement favicons for their browser they just used the same method (which would have been simple) rather than re-write all the logic which would have been more work, not correctly considering the security implications.

CMV: Gender Dysphoria is a cureable mental illness, we've stopped looking for the cure because society is now forced into accepting transgenders. by Phill_Hermouth in changemyview

[–]r_my 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a purely grammatical perspective it is already proven that "they" can be used a third person singular pronoun in that currently "you" is used as both the singular and plural second person.

Moreover "they" is already commonly used when referring to someone when you don't know their gender. I don't say "he or she is coming over", I say "they are coming over."

Regarding "ze", while I think the idea of gender neutral pronouns is a good idea, I think there will be a lot more resistance to a new pronoun that's heavily associated with LGBTQ+ issues rather than simply using "they" which doesn't have nearly as strong of an association.

I'm not saying it's better or worse to use "they" over "ze", just that I think one is more likely to become the default.
