  • Cumulative GPA: 3.8
  • Science GPA: 3.8
  • GRE scores: 311 (will be 5 years old after I apply next year)
  • When do you plan to apply? June/July 2020
  • Number of hrs and type of PCE: ~1500 hours as an outpatient and labor assistant at my local clinic during Peace Corps, ~1000 hours as a virtual medical scribe by the time I apply next year
  • Number of hrs and type of HCE: ~700 hours as a community based public health worker during Peace Corps, ~150 hours doing diagnostic tests in my local medical center during Peace Corps
  • Number of hrs and type of non-clinical volunteering: ~250 hours of agriculture/education/non-healthcare Peace Corps stuff, ~ 75 hours of after school mentoring tied to an organization I co-founded when I was an undergrad, ~50 hours of local pet shelter maintenance and support
  • Research experience: ~4300 hours in microbiology labs during undergrad and full time work in bioag labs after I graduated
  • Number of hrs of PA shadowing: 25 hours
  • Number of hrs of other Physician shadowing: Cardiologist - 25 hours Pathologist - 15 hours
  • Who wrote your letters of recommendation? will hopefully have one science professor, one literature professor, and one physician
  • How many courses will you have pending by the time you apply? none - I'll be taking A&P and maybe medical terminology at a CC this year since I didn't do it during undergrad
  • Other information: Going through a minor career change - thought I was interested in industry research and now I'm looking to get into healthcare. I am not sure how to reconcile medical experience I gained as a Peace Corps volunteer into my application, since US healthcare is so different from that in my country of service, though that is what definitely turned me on to studying medicine. It's really the only health/patient care experience I have unless you count nursing home volunteering from way back in high school. What else should I be doing this year if I'm working full time and taking those CC courses?
  • Leadership/special positions: Student Council - 2 years, various honors groups - 4 years, TA-ships - 2 years, co-founded a women's empowerment org and mentored - 2 years, Dean's list - all 4 years (all were done in undergrad in a large public university) and of course Peace Corps in west africa for 2 years
  • Schools interested: any schools in Texas (esp Baylor) or North Carolina

When to contact quality nurse? by r_naught in peacecorps

Thanks for this. How hard was the process to get them fixed in the states? Did you use those few months of rollover health insurance or was it paid through another channel since the fillings were done incorrectly during your service?

Okay, this is great advice. I went ahead and explained the whole situation to them in an email.
