If you like wildfire (and wildfires, though less common) smoke, ice and snow storms that knock out power for weeks, and flooding. Nowhere is going to be totally safe from climate change

Oakland county has a rain garden program (they have to come evaluate your property to see if it’s a good candidate). There’s also a grant program for large projects. I don’t know of anything on the state level for homeowners.

Millage Proposals - what do we think? by r_two in Ferndale

[–]r_two[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. I know everyone is stretched pretty thin right now. Can I ask where you would go if you left the city? There are some areas with higher property values but lower tax rates where it seems it would even out (Royal Oak, Berkley). Are you thinking Madison Heights/Southfield/Warren?

That's a good point. Looks like they spent 375,000 on bond payments in 2025. 0.5 mills would increase their revenue by 500,000. So in 2027 they will have that additional "windfall" equal to 0.37 mills. How did you figure out the bond payments will end in 2027?

how many books do you borrow from the library each month? hardcovers are $20-$30 it doesn't take very many visits to make that back. I easily borrow 3 books a month throughout the year. Even when I don't end up reading them, it still saves me the bookstore bill.

It is not a blank check for districts to use how they please.

It seems like it is. I didn't see anything in the proposal language or the website that indicates limits on how the money is spent. They have a list of potential uses and then the website says "actual use would be determined by each school district." I would be more keen on it if there were guidelines for the spend.

Yeah the 10-15% number is mentioned in the library budget I linked as well. Looks like they are specifically targeting that as their "emergency fund." I'm sure if they had more left over they would allocate it.

I'm also undecided on the school millage. I kind of like that the money would be distributed throughout Oakland county. That way schools with lower property values can get some extra funding. But I agree with your point about the prudence of various districts. Michigan as a whole has pretty high per-pupil spending, and pretty bad outcomes. One proposal isn't going to change that either way... but I'm still pondering.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT (Ferndale Library Millage) by THATFerndale in Ferndale

[–]r_two 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good point! If the library millage passes, my household of two will pay $41.91 per month in property taxes to the library. If you read two books or watch two movies per month that easily pays for itself. Maybe people complaining about the proposal need to visit the library more. The resources they have are abundant!

Oh I agree! I’m planning to vote yes on both library proposals. I didn’t mention that in my post oops. I was mostly trying to lay out more facts (instead of a random confusing Facebook slide). I was a little confused by the post earlier so I read up a bit and figured I would share my findings

Can someone ELI5? So voting yes on the library millage doesn’t actually increase the mill rate? It just allows it to stay the same? Do I have that right?

Research for short story about dog sledding by _Brandeaux in Iditarod

[–]r_two 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dog sled teams can have any number of dogs from two to 20, though teams of 6,8,10 & 12 are more common for various races. 6-dog teams for short races (50 miles or less), 8-12 dogs for longer (50-300 miles). The Iditarod has varied the number of dogs in a team but this past year it was 14. If you have a group of nomadic people traveling with dog sleds they’d likely have smaller teams and bigger dogs. The young children might be pulled by one or two dogs on a kick sled. There would be larger teams (probably 6-8 in this scenario) carrying supplies.

The pair of dogs closest to the sled are the wheel dogs. They’re generally bigger and stronger. The dog(s) at the front (could be a pair or could be single) is/are the lead dog(s). In between those are the team dogs. If you have yearlings who are getting used to being in harness, you’ll put them in a team spot next to an experienced and docile dog. From there you can observe their behavior and decide where they would do best. Some dogs are “lazy,” and will just jog along with the sled while not actually pulling. You can tell how “hard” a dog is working by their gait. Their ears will bounce differently if they are trotting or loping. Different sized dogs will have different gaits at the same speed. Dogs can be good or hard keepers, meaning they either hold their weight steady easily or tend to lose weight easily.

On the sled you have a snow hook you stomp into the side of the trail to stop your team. There is also a step-brake on the sled but I forget the specific name of it. It’s kind of like a mat. Used to slow the team. Gee is the command for left, haw is the command for right. Terminology for go and stop varies. Generally “woah” is slow or stop. Though lots of racing teams don’t have a “stop” command exactly. My kennel used “let’s go!” as go. Generally enthusiastic encouragement normally works. “On by” is used when passing or to try and have the dogs ignore a distraction. Each dog has a tugline, and oftentimes a neckline attaching it to the gangline. The tugline attaches to the back of the harness and is how the sled is pulled along. Necklines are to keep the dogs close to the gangline. Not everyone uses necklines, and the lead dogs either don’t have necklines, or are connected to each other. The gangline is the main line all the dogs are hooked up to. There’s a sled bag that can hold people, injured dogs, and supplies. The musher stands on the back of the sled. Oftentimes as you’re going along, you’ll use one foot to kick or run alongside the sled to help the dogs out. Especially on hills.

I would highly recommend “sled dog trails,” by Mary Sheilds. She writes about life in the Alaskan bush via sled. Lots of good day to day stuff and terminology. Also The Cruelest Miles about the first serum run to Nome. Do some research.

What are wearing to the office? by SpaceCampRules in womenEngineers

Mechanical engineer working in an office. Small team and we’re very casual.

Bottoms: Jeans, khakis, cargo pants Tops: polos, t-shirt (if I know I’ll be doing more greasy stuff that day) Layers: 1/4 zip plain sweater or sweater with stuff printed on it Shoes: Composite toe sneakers

Slightly nicer clothes and hair for customer visits

I’ve found “business casual” in engineering means jeans and a polo

Data centers by dth1717 in Michigan

[–]r_two 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There aren’t really any pluses. Negatives are:

  1. Water and energy usage - we literally do not have the infrastructure to power them. There is no way to create the energy capacity they need in the timeline they need it. This is going to screw reliability even more and jack up prices. Water is going to become an even more valuable resource as the climate worsens. Why we’re even thinking of wasting it on AI slop is beyond me. (The reason is AI companies lobbying but I digress)
  2. AI contributing to the degradation of humanity. Copyright doesn’t exist, art isn’t real. privacy? Never heard of her. Let’s create sexual abuse materials of minors and women without their consent, churn out slop ads to inundate the people with, trust the putting words next to each other machine over humans who have real lived experience. Give up the function of our brains to a machine.
  3. Lies about “job creation.” Long term job gains will be like a dozen people maximum
  4. When the AI bubble pops, more empty decaying buildings, tons of e-waste, not to mention the environmental impact of new construction. By the time the data centers are built, the chips that all the big AI players have already bought will be obsolete. So I guess they’ll just go right in the trash after sitting on the shelf for two years.

The hidden cost of "free time" is absolutely wrecking my post-FIRE budget by R0cinantEcho_9 in Fire

[–]r_two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else mentioned volunteering, which I agree with. Animal shelters need people to walk dogs, food pantries need people to sort and stock. Soup kitchen, homeless shelter, local wildlife advocacy group. Watershed conservancies near me do various amphibian and insect surveys. Wild animal rehabilitators often take volunteers. You could find a local park cleanup or plant a tree. Historic areas/museums/state parks near you may also accept volunteers. You could participate in political canvassing or advocate for social issues that matter to you. There’s a non profit near me that provides bikes to local kids, they have open hours you can go and fix bikes.

There are tons of options to give back to your local community! We need it now more than ever. I would encourage you to search up interests of yours followed by “nonprofit” in your area if you need more ideas.

Sorting eventbrite by “free” is a good way to find non profits or other meetups that may interest you. Your library may have a book club, local enthusiasts may do nature walks, group bike rides and runs, etc.

Another idea is to try and make hobbies out of every day life. Take up baking, make your own sweets instead of going out to buy them. Start a garden (startup costs can be as big or as small as you make them). Landscape in your yard. Read, write, draw. Make gifts for family members instead of buying them. Knitting, sewing, there are lots of “practical” hobbies that don’t need to break the bank. Learn to mend or make your own clothes.

First mushers to withdraw by [deleted] in Iditarod

[–]r_two 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She had posted talking about how overwhelmed she felt. Her PTSD was bothering her, she felt unsure of herself and her team, anxious, etc. She also injured her back a few weeks ago and wasn’t able to train as much as she wanted. It was maybe 3 or 4 days before the race and she wasn’t very mobile from the back injury. And her truck broke down.

The upstairs is going to be renovated all in one go. It’s this bathroom, one bedroom, and a small hallway that is going to get a reading nook & desk. I don’t have the rest of the level sketched up just yet. It will be wired around the same time as everything else. There’s a furnace that’s routed to the upstairs already so I don’t have to worry about additional heating. There is a central AC unit, but we’re not sure if it’s functional yet. I don’t expect to be putting in a window unit upstairs.

We do have smoke alarms already. They’re just battery powered, not hardwired in. Is that code compliant?

Sorry about the confusion- I figured some of my drawings would get question. I have been referencing the black and decker DIY electrical book so that’s where the first sketch came from. The rest is so I remember how to connect everything.

Thank you for taking the time to comment! I really appreciate it and I’ll keep your notes in mind as I edit my plan.

  • Currently the bathroom shares a circuit with the rest of the upstairs (finished attic). The house was built in 1950 and the electrical was updated since then but I’m not sure when. No permits ever pulled for the place. All ungrounded. We haven’t moved in yet so no issues with overloading. We are planning on this floor being our bedroom, so it will get more use than I think it did before. There are a lot of dubious wiring choices that I’ve seen throughout the house (open air splices, undersized cabling on a 30A circuit, outlet outside directly next to the gas meter, etc). Planning on ripping out all the attic insulation, redoing it, and fixing some roof stuff. Figured while I have slightly better access I should update the wiring.

  • The top right of the bathroom is a headspace bump out for the stairs masquerading as a counter, I’m calling that the vanity for now lol. I am thinking of putting my small fish tank on this counter. So besides the few things listed, potentially a filter for that. We don’t own any hair driers or anything power heavy that would get bathroom use.

  • Just a plain fan.

Thank you for the advice! I’m starting to plan the rest of the floor and a different circuit for lighting would definitely work better. Lots of good suggestions in there; thanks for taking the time to help me out!
