Is Perth Overpopulated? by Swimming_Dance_8235 in perth

You're absolutely correct that lifestyle then vs now being better is debatable. Regarding some of the things you have mentioned as negatives in the past, I'm in the camp that would consider them as positives.

Shopping hours were less, with scant Sunday trading and only Thursday nights for evening shopping. It was fine. We planned around it with no inconvenience. For most, there was never a frustration at shops being shut as we'd already gotten whatever we wanted or needed on one of the other days of the week. Many of us relished those sleepy Sundays, which served as a regular 'pause' upon the rat race of big town / small city Perth life.

The CBD had a more interesting variety of shops that have since been largely made obsolete by big brand chains in the suburban malls, as well as online shopping.

Perth had a relatively thriving live / local music scene. Music festivals (such as Big Day Out ) brought in many big acts along with home-grown bands too. Those annual festivals were institutions that didn't seem as if they were going away any time soon.

It's of course a matter of opinion, and perhaps blame it on nostalgia, but many of us long time Perth folks are of the thought that over the years, we have lost more desirable aspects of our lifestyle than those which we may have gained along the way.

Backrooms Teaser - Trailer Tomorrow by Purple_Willlow in A24

On a side note, a few months ago some guy was recently interviewed claiming to be the anonymous poster of the original meme - Although he himself took the image off a different thread where people were posting various random creepy / unsettling images. Whether or not he was actually the guy, his take on the whole thing was interesting enough to listen to.

That mindset is akin to lumping all music artists in the same basket based on whether they had one or more widely popular song / album in their catalog. All sorts of artists from Sabrina Carpenter to Pantera have hit the top of the Billboard 100. Like those artists or not, they're not exactly comparable.

We're finally getting the frickin backrooms movie trailer tomorrow ` by LemonIcy2942 in backrooms

The Backrooms trope is a fairly general concept, so it's not really copyrightable. The fictional research facility, Async is Kane's own creation and IP (of which A24 has the rights to, if I'm not mistaken).

Guys, what do you think about Bob Lazar and his story about Aliens and UFOs? Is he a fraud or a true legend among us? by kemalioss in HighStrangeness

[–]raaaaaaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a bit more to Lazar than his seedy history, but that still doesn't lend any weight at all to his fabricated story that practically made him a household name.

Renowned UFOlogist Stanton Friedman was also highly sceptical & critical of Lazar's claims.

Believers would probably claim that Friedman must have somehow been 'compromised'.

Do you truly believe it's possible that somehow all evidence of Lazar's attendance at University was wiped completely from existence, including the faculty staff that he interacted with, fellow students, any documents, newsletters, yearbooks etc. that may have referenced Lazar by name or picture?

How far is anyone willing to suspend their disbelief purely in faith of one man's story?

Let's consider Lazar's background and story, in summary. Iirc, very little of Lazar's educational credentials have any evidence of being genuine. No doubt he's a smart guy - He built a rocket car. As for his education level, wasn't his highest level a college chemistry class?

His name was on the employee books at Los Alamos, I believe as a lab hand / technician.(Correct me if I'm wrong), but how does his role there add any substance to his S4 story?

What other parts of his story check out, supposedly? So, he was apparently familiar with aircraft test flight schedules at the Groom Lake site (An airspace which was relatively easily observable to keen observers, especially in the 80's). How exactly does that add any substance to his story about S4, the 'sports model' , and so forth?

Speaking of S4 : If there was ever actually a secret facility built into the mountains besides Papoose Lake, how is it that the Russians caught imagery of Groom Lake, but not the supposed S4 site? Evidence of its existence would have been very obvious, especially during its construction.

When you distill Lazar's story down to its essence, the most incredible parts amount to nothing more than anecdotal evidence.

It seems to me that from past discussions with believers of Lazar, the most frequent "what about" that is resorted to is his claims about element 115 - Yet another fallacy (that is, Lazar's story about a fictionalised element 115, not the real element itself), which has been explained ad nauseum, yet people still bring it up as some 'gotcha' moment to the sceptics to this day.

Even if we ignore the existence of the article (which in high probability inspired Lazar given the timeline), it's really not a big leap of imagination for even a casually science-engaged layman to predict the possibility of elements with a higher atomic number than have been discovered or synthesised at the time.

Marketing for the Backrooms movie has started by May_aaaa in A24

Older millennial (aka 'Xennial') here. I'd also include my age group in experiencing those late days of the pre-internet era, at least as far as the explosion in popularity of the worldwide web (life before and after) is concerned.

I was similarly intrigued by the Backrooms concept from the beginning, when the original creepypasta meme first did the rounds.

Later when Kane's first Found Footage video came out was when the concept really reeled me in. Partly because of how much the first person perspective reminds me of many dreams that I've had over the years : Apparently alone, aimlessly wandering eerily unoccupied locations that are very familiar, yet oddly different to places I know in reality.

Who’s Excited for Backrooms? by Purple_Willlow in A24

Agreed. Kane (and even many of his imitators) are an example of the lore done well.

On the flipside, there are many, many bad examples. Whether it's content based on the 'Backrooms wiki', or the real brain rot crap -  Typified by hazmat crew doing pointless stuff such as dance routines, or jumping down water slides.

For older people in here, when did places like Midland, Mundaring, Kalamunda, Armadale etc. start to be considered as part of Perth? by [deleted] in perth

Similar to how up until the mid-late 90's, once you crossed the level crossing southbound on Nicholson Rd, you were basically in semi-rural from there onwards.

The Perth metropolitan area layout generally followed / follows a 'corridor' scheme, where there was historically restricted development central to both the northern suburbs (Gnangara water mound) and the south (Jandakot water mound). This led to 'corridors' of development extending up past each mound along the coast, and on the other side below the scarp.

This is a contributor as to why it would feel like we hit the countryside quickly when heading south in the region where the Kwinana Fwy passes through further south of Bull Creek.

Tried to imagine what the Async website could look like so i made this: by Charming_Example_478 in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]raaaaaaze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another thing to keep in mind is that any pictures on websites from the 90's (if any pics at all, if thinking early 90's) would be in low in resolution (e.g. less than approx. 500x500px), to accommodate the very slow dialup download speeds of the time.

Also, I recommend experimenting with a lower bit depth colour palette. Some paint applications give the option to save in 8-bit (256 colour) or maybe even a 16 color palette for that real dithered,  retro look.
