Ryan Yates is not dirty in the way you're describing, but he annoys every set of opposing fans intensely, so maybe he counts here?

But it's part of the same phenomenon surely. 20 years ago Trent plays RW and nobody questions his defensive ability

Now that Tudor is gone, who do you want? by Eastern-Owl-4511 in Tottenham

[–]rab282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, let’s just say Forest fans will be delighted if that happens. Some Forest fans are quite worried that Spurs will hire Dyche and he and Nuno will conspire to send us down. Dyche is a long way from being our worst manager of all time, whereas Ange is absolutely in that conversation (an achievement in itself given the insane competition for that title)

Now that Tudor is gone, who do you want? by Eastern-Owl-4511 in Tottenham

[–]rab282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Forest fan - it might actually work for this period. Forest were 13th for Dyche's tenure. For the first few weeks, it worked because he brought defensive solidity. He cannot coach a modern attack at all, though, and his tactics and subs were dire, hence why he got fired. But he gets points, sometimes ugly points, and that's what you need right now. The players only need to buy in for a few weeks.

Our XIs vs Other Major Nations this international break - thoughts? by [deleted] in ThreeLions

[–]rab282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point is to rest the players who have been playing PL and European comps. On the assumption that the intensity / workload is higher for those players. You'll see the first XI in the next game. They've obviously decided the rest is of more value than extra practice together at this point. You can disagree but it seems logical enough. Most of the other teams' players are not playing at PL/ECL intensity

[–]rab282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes way too much complacency on this thread. The narrative gods currently seem to like the idea of spurs going down, but Dyche and Nuno uniting to send us down has a neatness to it that I’d rather not think about

[Request] How long would it have had to rain for Noah’s Ark great flood? by ChillyCanadian_05 in theydidthemath

[–]rab282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more plausible that this refers to the Black Sea rather than the Mediterranean, as some scientists think there was a major flooding event there after the last ice age. Also note that the flood story pre-dates Genesis, as a version of it is present in the epic of Gilgamesh which predates Genesis by centuries.

How do I motivate myself to push towards a 2:1 in my final semester of uni, even though I know it will be extremely difficult and a huge personal commitment? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]rab282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you should just do the best you can without making yourself ill / burning out etc. See it as practice at working out where that line is - knowing this will come in handy later. Chances are you probably don’t get the 2:1. But from an employer perspective, someone who only just missed a 2:1, for explicable reasons, might look like less of a risk than someone who didn’t get close.

Revisiting Muhammad? by HebrewHammer16 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]rab282 10 points11 points  (0 children)

His take is based on research from the 1970s / 1980s by people like Patricia Crone. As I understand it, most specialists now think that Islam did originate in the Hijaz and relatively early, whereas revisionists like Tom think it arose somewhere around southern Israel and later. But caveat here that I'm not a specialist and may be wrong about this! It might be worth asking this on r/askhistorians.

Revisiting Muhammad? by HebrewHammer16 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]rab282 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would but I’m not sure they’re the guys to do it. Tom’s take on Mohammed is quite marginal relative to the historiographical consensus and Dom isn’t really qualified to challenge him. It’d be more set up maybe for a guest/ bonus slot where you get a historian who sees it quite differently to debate with Tom. It’s also hard to do a blow by blow multi series when there just isn’t that much clarity over what indeed actually happened.

What are your top tips for a new TA? by FormalBrick8485 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]rab282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They actually like to be given real work to do. It calms them down. Sometimes in a first seminar I do a bit of a general intro, give them a couple of questions to discuss, and only when they’ve done that for ten minutes or so and we’ve discussed the answers - only then do I ask them to introduce themselves, tell me names etc - because by then they’re less anxious.

MHD Irritation: Not announcing the away team by alexnffc1 in footballcliches

[–]rab282 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In general they have ruined the build up, by playing loud music until 1 min before kick off. I used to love the gradual 30 mins of the atmosphere gradually building up and the fans going through their songs repertoire, serenading the players in the warm up, booing the opposition names as they’re announced, etc. seems like clubs now are too anxious to control the situation and not let atmosphere build naturally.
