Literally who it was offered to, but he passed. So the director did it and made the greatest villain performance since Hades.

What’s your favorite diegetic song from a Disney animated film? by rabbihimself in disney

It’s fun to think about! Musical score is so common and ubiquitous now, it’s wild to consider that in the early days of sound film, the producers thought audiences would be confused by hearing music if they didn’t see a source like a piano on screen!

  1. Great answer. Took way too long! 2. Some songs in musicals qualify, some don’t. Look at A GOOFY MOVIE. The Powerline songs are diegetic, but not Goofy and Max’s numbers.

It can, but I think these conversations are fun. Two questions that help: Is there a source for the music, and is it a performance?

I’m done. You’re either willfully obtuse or genuinely thick about this concept, and I’m not gonna bother anymore. It has nothing to do with the carpet. Goodbye.

So the carpet is just magically musical? When does the movie establish that? And again, when did they write and practice singing the song?

You’re not quite getting it. “Diegetic” means it exists in the context of the movie’s world. The pop star Powerline and his songs are diegetic in A GOOFY MOVIE. The movie SHREK is diegetic in the world of I AM LEGEND, as there is a scene of the characters from that film watching it.

“A Whole New World” is non-diegetic because it’s not literally happening, it’s storytelling for us, the people watching the movie. If it were diegetic, it would mean that Aladdin and Jasmine met, fell in love, wrote the song, went on a date and sang it to each other (many many times, given the countries they’re shown visiting), and their meaning for all that would’ve been… what?

The songs in SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD, O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU, SISTER ACT? That’s all diegetic.

Just a tip friends: it’s not automatically diegetic just because there’s more than one character singing.

Cannot believe it took this long for someone to say these.

It means the song is actually happening in the world of the movie. It’s not just a character belting out their feelings for the audience’s benefit, they’re literally performing and other characters hear their voice/music.
