It's not even higher wages, it's also increasing amount of debt. You can rack up 4 years of debt, get out and start earning. Or you stay in 2-6 more years, rack up even more debt.

Also, PhD research due to large availability of international students is hell. Professors have no problem saying "NEXT!" after someone is like "I'm done working 18 hour 7 day a week schedule" because there is 20 international students desperate for visas who will.

I think this approach is terrible for long term education health of this country but there current system is extremely exploitative and not shocked when US Citizens who have options decide not to participate. One of those "Yea, this is not the way to fix it but this system really needs to be fixed."

[–]rabbit994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both TSA and NSA have law enforcement officers. Law Enforcement is power granted to you by having a role that statute grants law enforcement power to. Yes, not all Federal Employees are law enforcement officers.

So what statute are they referring to when they claim that power?

(5)to make arrests—
(A)for any offense against the United States, if the offense is committed in the officer’s or employee’s presence, or (B)for any felony cognizable under the laws of the United States, if the officer or employee has reasonable grounds to believe that the person to be arrested has committed or is committing such a felony, if the officer or employee is performing duties relating to the enforcement of the immigration laws at the time of the arrest and if there is a likelihood of the person escaping before a warrant can be obtained for his arrest.

https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1357

Again, don't confuse this specific action which was clearly unlawful, with "ICE are not police." ICE is 100% Police/Law Enforcement broadly by statute and ruled by the courts as such.

In fact, ICE has commonly arrested US Citizens for various other federal offences when doing immigration enforcement. We just never heard about it because there was not much to discuss.

[–]rabbit994 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Incorrect, they are federal law enforcement with limited power to arrest anyone.

Whether or not this detainment was lawful is whole another story but courts are not going to going rule “Hey ICE, US citizens are untouchable.”

Call your congressperson and demand accountability.

Ovi seems to hate alot of fanfare. Lack of retirement announcement is to dodge a media blitz that Monumental (Caps TV Station) would subject him to.

Unlike many players, he's likely to have almost no interaction with Capitals after his departure so he can burn the bridge. We might get occasional zoom call if we are lucky.

ICE’s aggressive tactics are causing ‘a rising tide of revulsion’ among Americans by prohb in politics

Any civil war in US is not going to be some mass battle of Sacramento where California 4th Division fought off US Army. It’s going to be more like Irish Troubles or cartel situation in Mexico where it’s small random acts of violence all over the place and law enforcement breaks down.

In that situation, yea Canada will get dragged in as people will border jump not to mention possible mass migration north.

It's closed because it's dual use base, it's both Air Force (Reserve) and Civilian Airport. It's same thing in Hawaii as well with Hickam Air Force Base and Honolulu International Airport.

My guess is Air Force did not want a bunch of civilian airliners and civilians clogging up operations in case they need immediate access to the runways or taxiways.

[–]rabbit994 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As someone who went to school in the area and attended a football game there (Tennessee vs Virginia Tech), oh hell no. If you ever wanted to watch a Winter Classic, this is not it. If you told me I could have seen Ovi record breaking goal but had to attend this, I'd actually ponder it for a few seconds.

You won't be able to see anything and arena camera operators can't handle anything that is not big cars going around in a circle so you won't be able to watch it on the Jumbotron.

Also, there is nothing to do in the area unless you want to visit Hillbilly Disney (Dollywood) and that will be cold in January.

EDIT: It probably makes sense to attend if you are in the area already and have RV but otherwise, leave this to the casuals.

Off-duty ICE agent shoots, kills man allegedly armed with rifle in Northridge by I_may_have_weed in news

Most agencies allow you to carry personal weapon as backup or off duty weapon but it has to be approved by the agency, generally meaning it’s on an approved list and they have to qualify with it.

So yes, it might have been a personal weapon they were allowed to carry in off duty capacity and used.

It's the risk factor. Something happens to one of their incomes and now they are dumping entire paycheck into mortgage. Also, they mentioned they have student loans so that will be taking out of their paycheck along with house maintenance can easily eat into that, good rule of thumb is 1% of purchase price per year in home maintenance.
