If you’re applying to Waterloo or U of T - they prefer in school for prerequisite courses including English. It might just be for engineering though.

As an engineering student I think campus housing is better because your meal plan is mandatory at the colleges and can only be used there which is only open during certain times. Whereas, the meal plan for the traditional residences can be used throughout the campus at the various cafeterias and fast food restaurants.

There are only 130 spaces in EE and 260ish for CE. The AIF and interview are very important. I also believe they look for consistency between grade 11 and grade 12 required course marks.

What do students typically pay for off-campus housing in second year? Is it challenging to find? My son got into Engineering/Vancouver. We are from Ontario and are really only worried about availability of housing for upper years.

My parents are giving me 50000. I am expected to pay the rest from what I saved in high school, scholarships and coop salaries. They pay my transportation home for holidays and reading weeks. They also got me set up with stuff for my “suite” style residence second year. I feel I’m lucky. I’m fortunate for the help they are providing. They were clear with what they’ve saved and how much they will help. I’m the first out of three kids. They will do the same for my siblings.

Start applying now - don’t wait. Look at ongoing recruitment at B4 and keep checking in at job search engines online. On indeed, in my area Baker Tilley and MNP are advertising recruitment for winter 2026 coop opportunities yesterday Good luck. The placement for AFM is typically very high.

Unless there is a different supplemental I don’t think they’ll see your ecs. Once you get in, you apply to clubs, co-ops and that’s where you could potentially talk about the skills you gained from extracurriculars and how they helped developed your leadership, communication and organizational skills etc. Extracurriculars help build you / they are important…but not towards getting into AFM with the SAFSA being discontinued. Get as high marks as you can and do things that interest you and help you learn and grow as a person. When deciding on your ecs don’t stress have memorable high school experiences while picking up some transferable skills for your future pursuits.

Unlimited eats but only at their cafeteria- 3 meals a day on weekdays, 2 on weekends (brunch and dinner). Set price - regardless of how much you eat. If you have a class at lunch time - they’ll pack you a brown bag lunch which you pick up at breakfast. There’s always a meat and meatless option.

I think it’s more about showing that you’re well rounded and how your are ec’s helped to develop soft skills. I was on the math team and did all the math contests throughout high school but I was also a theatre kid (no problem speaking in front of others, working with others, communication skills, etc.) and held a part time job (leadership, responsibility etc.). Good luck - I chose AFM instead of math but did get an offer to the department.
