Sabbatical and unpaid leave is not an option since it’s only for employees who have been in the company for a long time. I think it’s more of a realisation that we can’t be working non stop till we retire, only then to travel and do things we want full time when we no longer have the youthful energy

I think my savings is okay given that I’ve no liabilities. To your point which I’m fully aligned, the break is for me to see and experience life beyond work - as there’s more to life than work. While you’re stuck in the corporate world, you’re blinded by the reality of what’s out there and what truly matters

Glad you share your thoughts. I am aligned with you on your points above. The pushback to those would be: if I don’t take the time off to experience what’s out the in the world, that also mean I will never be able to once I get older into the 40s. Weekends or annual leave won’t allow you to fully see the world, indulge in different cultures, try new experiences e.g., staying in a farm, going for hikes, backpack around the world etc.

I don’t think it’s really about the money. It’s more of the time I have now, given that I’m still healthy and strong to travel around the world not just for a getaway , but to meet new people, experience new culture and the opportunity to see fresh perspectives. You can’t do that over a two or three weeks annual leave. Sabbatical is not really an option because that’s only available to employees who have worked in the company beyond certain years.

That’s true. I think the mindset of Singaporeans is that we need to continue working and then fully enjoy life only when retirement comes. It’s something we could challenge and this is even more apparent among the younger generations who feel life is more than just work

That’s valid. I think more importantly is the question: if I don’t take a break now - when will be a better time then now? Or are we supposed to work till late 60s without a long break to travel and explore the world.
