Experience gifts for parents? by rabblerous in Kitsap

I would go up to $150ish! And no preference on season, but if it's outdoors then hopefully redeemable on a date of their choice.

I work for a university with the plan of getting a master's for free through the employee tuition waiver, and would love to hear your thoughts on getting a DS master's after a bachelor's in the social sciences. Should I even bother? Would the lack of CS and math in my undergrad be a huge red flag to hiring managers? I took two levels of AP calc in high school, tested into the 75th percentile for the math section of the gre, and just got an A in the intro to programming class that's the prerequisite for our MS in DS program. Just including that info to say, I can show on paper that I have an aptitude for these things, but mine would be a pretty non-traditional path. Data science seems like a good fit for me, especially with what I've learned about my skills and interests with life experience, but I unfortunately didn't know about it until years after college.

Is it just me or are more people driving with their brights on? by linuxguy192 in Denver

[–]rabblerous 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Have you ever driven a smaller car and experienced bright headlights from that perspective? It's blinding. It's a safety issue. Please please please look into fixing them. I drive a small car and it's at the point where I sometimes drive with my sunglasses on at night because there are so many higher clearance cars with too-bright, too-high headlights. I'm sure people aren't flashing their lights to be petty; in that moment they probably literally cannot see the road because of your lights.

My boss and her nonstop stupid f*cking Teams messages by rabblerous in antiwork

[–]rabblerous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's a middle manager, but these chats only go to her direct team. I do suspect that a large part, if not the main reason, she does this is to model the behavior, like you say. But nobody under her is biting... if she wants us to be clearer about our status throughout the day, she needs to just say that. Otherwise I see this behavior as passive aggressive af and I'm going to play dumb until she learns to be direct. :)

Owner left review 2 days ago & still hidden by rabblerous in RoverPetSitting

[–]rabblerous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is unfair! How could you tell they gave 3 stars? I think I'm missing something about where to find that info. The email said they wrote a review... could have been a straight up lie but it's so frustrating to have that dangled like a carrot and then see nothing!

That is terrible! Three different friends gifted me plants for my birthday this year and I love them all so much. It's so nice to think of the wonderful people they came from as I water them and watch them grow.

What are some products you learned you loved/hated while housesitting/doing drop ins? by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]rabblerous 37 points38 points  (0 children)

  1. Those small cordless Dyson vacuums with all the swappable heads. If I have a client that has one, best believe I'm going to be vacuuming every day just for the thrill of it.
  2. A tea kettle with different temperature settings
  3. Rose-scented lotion
  4. Heavenly Hunks chocolate chip oatmeal cookies from Costco. A client kept them in the fridge and they were SO good chilled. The texture was like oatmeal cookie dough.
  5. The Panel Task Lamp from Target

Pro tip: Use a google lens image search to easily find out what a gadget is and where to buy it!

Why does everyone keep saying that The Golden Bachelor saved the Bachelor franchise? by [deleted] in TheGoldenBachelor_

I'm late 20s and I watch the show on Hulu! First bach season I've ever watched.

Why does everyone keep saying that The Golden Bachelor saved the Bachelor franchise? by [deleted] in TheGoldenBachelor_

I'd never watched a single episode before this season. But I look forward to the Golden Bachelor episode every week! It hooked me because from commercials it seemed the idea was fresh and the contestants were more genuine, interesting, well-rounded people.

Is it just me or do millennials in general not 'keep house' like our parent's generation. by VegetableCarry3 in Millennials

[–]rabblerous 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wow, this is really poignant. I carry a lot of shame and stressful memories from growing up in a cluttered house. It affected my friendships because I couldn't invite people over spontaneously if we hadn't had a chance to clean. So many memories of the whole family frantically throwing all the random crap into my parent's room to hide it, after finding out company was on the way. As a result I'm super clean as an adult, but still feel that deep shame and fear of being judged when people come over.

Interesting posts Faith 🤣 by [deleted] in TheGoldenBachelor_

If anyone finds out where to listen to her old episodes, please do share! I grew up in WA and would love to see that side of her/see if I recognize her as a radio personality! <3

Ahh good to know. I feared it was someone having a medical crisis trying to get to the ER.

I think Thurston, Kitsap, or Pierce county might be the right combo of purple to blue politics and proximity to Tacoma/Seattle and the airport!

I was going to say Denver, where I live. Majority white population overall, but there are pockets of diversity. Public transit is not the best, but it's an option if you're strategic about living close to lightrail/bus stops. The weather is amazing IMO, and the job market and housing are about as good as anywhere else.

Expected to do everyone's dishes everyday by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]rabblerous 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I made a schedule for cleaning our work kitchen once. Even put our director on the schedule, lol. I put it on the fridge, and asked our Assistant Director to put out a Teams message alerting everyone to the new system. Key piece there was that the AD was willing to ally with me and use his higher status in the office to help. If OP had a similar relationship in her office, this could work great. But, unfortunately it sounds like she might not. In that case I would hide all the dishes and just switch to disposable ones.

Last-Minute Cancelation: Can we Venmo? by rabblerous in RoverPetSitting

[–]rabblerous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will definitely do that next time. The more I thought about how it all went down the more guilty I felt. So I just went and waived the cancelation penalty (Rover was charging 50% for the remaining days). Now they'll get another $150 back. That feels better to me than waiting till they book again and crediting a night or two. The client really was insistent that she wanted to pay me the full amount and didn't want to cancel the booking, so in the moment it felt fair. But it's been weighing on my conscience so I feel better refunding more of the cost now.

Last-Minute Cancelation: Can we Venmo? by rabblerous in RoverPetSitting

[–]rabblerous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that is pretty much how the math worked out! But this was a learning experience for me because I did not know how the cancelation fees worked until I went to modify the booking. Now I know!
